Well...I was (and probably still am) a bit of a pugnacious deadhead...

I think the goal of a standard Grateful Dead performance was to achieve a unique / interesting instrumental jam. The songs warmed the band up for the portion of a performance where they would instrumentally explore. For me, and from what i've read / heard about the band, that was the highlight. The songs were great but it was the instrumental jams that made the band (e.g., playin' in the band, the other one, dark star, the eleven jam, china cat transition to rider, scarlet transition to fire, etc.). I remember going to high school parties with tapes and sneakily lowering the volume of U2 or

just listened to recording - very impressive show...each song version really seemed to crackle with energy...this would a great roadcase release...

I love studying the shows and especially studying the tours...doing the same with wilco is fun too...the dead shows are more varied though - each show really was different...can't say the same about wilco. The dead show differences come through not only the set lists but also the enthusiasm...The wilco show differences show to show don't arrive through the set lists, on average, but rather through their enthusiasm...i think...

i listened to Jerry Garcia, et al (grateful dead, jerry garcia band, etc), for about 20 straight years...amazing...roughly 1987 through 2007...then I stopped and had all of these amazing discoveries - U2, REM, Nirvana, etc...Now i seem to be more balanced... I did go through a wilco phase as well - about 9 straight months of just listening to live shows. Wilco is tougher than the Dead and jerry band though. 12.15.72 is amazing. The playin' is extremely different than most versions in that jerry is on attack mode throughout. At some points in the jam it is only jerry and billy plyaing...Verry different...The Truckin' Dark Star is the highlight for me. The five minutes prior to the verse in dark star is jerry at his best, rivaled (in my opinion) only by the five minutes prior to verse one of 7.18.1972 dark star...take your pick - i'm happy with either... ...and the Greatest STory... For me the highlight of hte 8.27.1972 show is the playin jam. The Europe tour had some extended crazy playin' spaces, but 8.27.1972 truly one of hte first extended (20 minute) playin' jams laced with pure bliss and mania and sorrow and desire all in one jam...The other highlights of 8.27.1972 (chider , dark star, etc) were truly highlights, but for the band, this was one of the first truly ephemeral playin' in hte bands...indeed, they now had (for the time being through 1974), a first set dark star / other one in playin in the band...the band was reaching their c

Agreed about the 73 Chiders. 8.27.1972 was interesting though because of the extended non- feelin' groovey Jerry solo following the Weir lead. Great stuff...

8.27.1972 is phenomenal. My favorite portions include the China Cat transition to Rider with the Weir solo followed by the amazing Jerry solo, the insane Playin' in the Band; and the Dark Star. The Dark Star is great but others from around that date are a bit better in my opinion...(7.18.1972 - wow)

listened to 9.25.1980 earlier today - first accoustic show. Accoustic set a bit rusty, but teh playin in the band was really exceptional...overall average show with a phenomenal playin....
