  1. Well...I was (and probably still am) a bit of a pugnacious deadhead...
  2. I think the goal of a standard Grateful Dead performance was to achieve a unique / interesting instrumental jam. The songs warmed the band up for the portion of a performance where they would instrumentally explore. For me, and from what i've read / heard about the band, that was the highlight. The songs were great but it was the instrumental jams that made the band (e.g., playin' in the band, the other one, dark star, the eleven jam, china cat transition to rider, scarlet transition to fire, etc.). I remember going to high school parties with tapes and sneakily lowering the volume of U2 or
  3. just listened to recording - very impressive show...each song version really seemed to crackle with energy...this would a great roadcase release...
  4. bump...thanks for capo 2...
  5. lots of presale still available for duluth and rochester...just got great seats for rochester 40 minutes in to presale... lake geneva not sold out yet either? wow...
  6. Anyone else love this show? Colton is now gone...Kim looks like a winner to me and Jonas...
  7. I love studying the shows and especially studying the tours...doing the same with wilco is fun too...the dead shows are more varied though - each show really was different...can't say the same about wilco. The dead show differences come through not only the set lists but also the enthusiasm...The wilco show differences show to show don't arrive through the set lists, on average, but rather through their enthusiasm...i think...
  8. ok.... 7.19.89 Alpine Valley East Troy, Wisconsin Wednesday 42nd Show of Year 11th Show of 1989 Summer Tour (14th if you count the 3 June Shoreline Shows) The 42nd show of the year was also the final show of the main 1989 Summer Tour. This main tour comprised 11 shows in 17 days. Only one show (7.7.1989) was exceptional. But, the average show was definitely on the rise – certainly a better tour than the 1989 Spring Tour. The band started with Hell. The band immediately sounded stronger and more energetic than the previous night. The Hell is strongly sung by Weir with a mixture of cockine
  9. For comparisons sake...here is my 17 July 1989 review written around the same time. 7.17.89 Alpine Valley East Troy, Wisconsin Monday 40th Show of Year 9th Show of 1989 Summer Tour (12th if you count the 3 June Shoreline Shows) http://www.archive.org/details/gd1989-07-17.mtx.hansokolow.96230.flac16 The final three shows of the 1989 Summer Tour began on a Monday in rural Wisconsin at easily one of the most pristine places to see the Dead --- Alpine. Sadly, the band would be barred from Alpine following the final show, and would not play Alpine again until without Jerry in 2002. The Garcia
  10. Interesting that 18 July 1989 would be shown..in my opinion a hangover show overshadowed by the ephemeral 17 July 1989 show. Here is a review I wrote a few years back about this show... 7.18.89 Alpine Valley East Troy, Wisconsin Tuesday 41st Show of Year 10th Show of 1989 Summer Tour (13th if you count the 3 June Shoreline Shows) http://www.archive.org/details/gd1989-07-18.mtx.hansokolow.96231.flac16 After a rather epic night which featured the return of Bid You Goodnight and one of the finest China Cat jams ever, the band resurfaced for night two of three at Alpine. According to Mr. Bri
  11. i listened to Jerry Garcia, et al (grateful dead, jerry garcia band, etc), for about 20 straight years...amazing...roughly 1987 through 2007...then I stopped and had all of these amazing discoveries - U2, REM, Nirvana, etc...Now i seem to be more balanced... I did go through a wilco phase as well - about 9 straight months of just listening to live shows. Wilco is tougher than the Dead and jerry band though. The dead and jerry band shows were so varied show to show. Wilco tends to be nearly the same show every night but for about 5 songs. I wonder why wilco doesn't have more variation in th
  12. 12.15.72 is amazing. The playin' is extremely different than most versions in that jerry is on attack mode throughout. At some points in the jam it is only jerry and billy plyaing...Verry different...The Truckin' Dark Star is the highlight for me. The five minutes prior to the verse in dark star is jerry at his best, rivaled (in my opinion) only by the five minutes prior to verse one of 7.18.1972 dark star...take your pick - i'm happy with either... The 11.17.1973 PUMUP is their finest (again in my opinion). The 11.10.1973 version was a bit nascent in that the jams and transitions were a bit
  13. ...and the Greatest STory... For me the highlight of hte 8.27.1972 show is the playin jam. The Europe tour had some extended crazy playin' spaces, but 8.27.1972 truly one of hte first extended (20 minute) playin' jams laced with pure bliss and mania and sorrow and desire all in one jam...The other highlights of 8.27.1972 (chider , dark star, etc) were truly highlights, but for the band, this was one of the first truly ephemeral playin' in hte bands...indeed, they now had (for the time being through 1974), a first set dark star / other one in playin in the band...the band was reaching their c
  14. Agreed about the 73 Chiders. 8.27.1972 was interesting though because of the extended non- feelin' groovey Jerry solo following the Weir lead. Great stuff...
  15. 8.27.1972 is phenomenal. My favorite portions include the China Cat transition to Rider with the Weir solo followed by the amazing Jerry solo, the insane Playin' in the Band; and the Dark Star. The Dark Star is great but others from around that date are a bit better in my opinion...(7.18.1972 - wow)
  16. listened to 9.25.1980 earlier today - first accoustic show. Accoustic set a bit rusty, but teh playin in the band was really exceptional...overall average show with a phenomenal playin....
  17. I'd love to hear of more solo shows...fish creek again????
  18. another great Loser solo is from July 7, 1989 - smoking show. Very underated for a great year. Favorite 1989 shows? 2.10, 4.2, 4.15, 6.28, 7.7, 7.17, 10.19, 12.27
  19. Speaking of 1980...just listened to 9/2 9/3 9/4 and 9/6....very nice run....
  20. sometimes i used the tdks.... my favorite spans - 68-70; Fall 1971 through 1975
