  1. Shooting for the opening night at the Egg and hoping to hit one or two in the city. My 19 year old daughter had always wanted to see them (alas, she's a Belew fan so it will be a very different experience) so I'll probably take her. This will be very different gig - three drummers, Mel Collins on horns again and Jakko Jakszyk on the other guitar (and the always awesome Tony Levin). Jakko has worked with Fripp for a while and has worked with Mel Colllins so those guys have some history. Jakko sings, too, so I assume he'll take over any lead vocals. I can't really see them doing any of the
  2. Steve Rogers used to be in an area band called Mighty Purple. He opened a little place called The Space that books local stuff and some good national acts that are good for small rooms. Saw the California Guitar Trio with Tony Levin and Pat Mastellato ther with my then-thirteen year-old daughter a few years back; intimate setting and decent sound. They've added another performance space/bar in a neighboring building building, The Outer Space. Peter Murphy is coming there in the near future.
  3. Went to see her the other night at a little place in Hamden CT on the recommendation of a buddy and she was great. She's young but apparently making a name for herself. She was at Coachella last week, did an NPR Tiny Desk Concert (solo), etc. Literate, interesting songs that play well acoustically or with her band. She was with a trio and really rocked out some of the stuff that on Youtube was done quietly. It all worked - a sign of a true artist. Got to check out more of this.
  4. "Box Full of Letters" when I turned on the car this morning. WEHM, 92.9 out of the end of Long Island, just strong enough for me to get it here on the CT shoreline and listen to on the way to work and then it's gone. They play Wilco regularly. It's what good commercial radio once was... Also so a "Welcome to Solid Sound" sticker on a car near the New Haven Green Easter morning.
  5. Not Wilco exactly, but I heard this on a great station out of the east end of Long Island, WEHM, 92.9 (and he did sing this with Jeff at SS 2011). Fortunately, their signal is strong enough to reach the CT shore.
  6. Vulveeta? I thought they were open-air urinals?
  7. I thought this was already settled. They are focusing on new music and recording this year and will do the festival in 2015, no?
  8. Not sure if the blasphemy refered to above was about the Zeppelin being better than any of Beck's bands or the claim that Jeff is a better guitarist than Jimmie Page, but from where I'm sitting Beck blows Page away on his worst day. OK, here's some "blasphemy" for ya: Autumn Defense is flacid folk-rock. Having seen them live twice, damn near everything they play is a piss break for me. Start shooting, fans!
  9. So Westerberg is god. Clapton is god. I've been told Todd is god. Would the real god please sit down..
  10. B&N had a dozen of them in a variety of prices. Just bought one in "very good" condition for $1.99 and it's just up the road a piece from where I live in CT. Don't know why I haven't purchased this yet, but that's been corrected.
  11. Has anyone here caught any of the Jeff Beck/Brian Wilson shows? We've got tix for tomorrow night at the Oakdale in CT; apparently tix aren't selling so I'm wondering if it isn't going over too well. Beck's always worth seeing, anyway.
  12. I teach English to juniors and seniors. This past June a junior came in and announced, "I hear you're really into Wilco - I want to sign up for your AP Lit course." One of my new juniors caught an eye of my Wilco "shrine" (posters, photos with the band, tickets) in the corner behind my desk and professed his love for the band. There is hope for this generation!
  13. Small world, indeed. Are you in the New Haven area? I used to live at Toad's. In fact, I met my wife at Toad's, though it's not as seedy as it sounds; we have a friend in common. In fact, that friend is the guy who turned me on to Wilco. I owe that man.
  14. I was at that Zevon show at Toad's Place. I bought tickets for a couple friends, including my wife. I was so excited and they hated it. I've taken her to see King Crimson and Wilco with pretty much the same results ("Don't need to do that again"), though I catch her singing Wilco if it's on. Now for killer openers, KC opening with "Waiting Man" on the Beat tour was, for me, sublime. There's such beautiful tension that builds up to this great barrage of noise. http://youtu.be/sYe7lEhiXH8
  15. That's the one. Unfortunately, Beck fell on the way to the stage and his set was cancelled. My buddie won a contest through EMI and they put us up in Manhattan for the weekend at a funky midtown hotel, tix to the Radiohead MTV2 taping at the Beacon Friday night and the Field Day show. We caught Government Mule in Central Park in between. It was a killer weekend.
  16. Always travel with Gortex in tow. It has save my day on more than a few occassions. At a Radiohead mulit-band gig at the Meadowlands a handful of years back everyone was wearing trashbags and I was high and dry in my rain gear!
  17. Now, that I like. I hope they work out a few new songs during this.
  18. On our extended snow break here in CT, finally getting around to watching "Louie" and have watched the first season and a half, about a half-dozen episodes at a clip, and loving it. Louis CK is hillarious, shocking, and poignant at the same time. Been watching a bunch of movies; quite surprised that we liked "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." I don't think we are the intended audience, but it was situated right in my late adolescence; the music was great (if you like the Smiths; the "tunnel song" - Bowie and Fripp's "Heroes" was prominently featured). "Lars and the Real Girl" was odd and a
  19. No love for Mark Mulcahy? It happened and a few of us noticed! Now if Mr. Ray were to come along for the ride to North Adams....
  20. I haven't checked out the Cribs, but the two discs he recorded with MM were great. We got to see them at Look Park in Northampton, MA, a great little outdoor venue, and it was a great evening. I don't know how I missed it, but Wilco played the same venue about a month earlier. Oh well...
  21. The Smiths will never happen. Johnny Marr has made some comments suggesting that he is open to it, but Morissey - not happening. His ego is too huge (and yes, he is a douche, though a talented one). We saw Morissey a couple weeks back in NY and it was great. They do quite a bit of Smiths material and his band pulls it off admirably. Now I hope Marr comes around later in the year after his new disc is released. He's doing a bunch of dates in the UK so let's hope. Saw him guest with Dinosaur Jr. a couple months back in the city and he didn't disappoint.
  22. I was just going to post exactly that! Classic stuff!
