  1. Why allow a state to fund its unnecessary bloated budget by having its constituents voluntarily pay fees for license plates, when instead the state could just raise tax rates and force all people to pay?
  2. It depends on the law. But in this case, it is the responsibility of the state government to properly regulate its elections. And unlike you, I see nothing insidious or burdensome about this particular law. I also agree with MattZ in that there are other ways to prevent voter fraud. But this particular law in Indiana, on its face, does not raise any red flags to me.
  3. So three justices thought it did and six justices thought it did not. I'm not sure what that means or proves for you. Souter's dissent extrapolates everything out to a hidden and excessive cost. Talk about a slippery slope. Should we start setting up government programs to come to the front door of poor people to provide every service that they need? Breyer's dissent is typical of Breyer and proves that he may be the worst justice in the history of the Supreme Court. If I ever found myself agreeing with one of Breyer's opinions, I would start to question my own sanity. Comparing India
  4. And it's not a slippery slope because the line has clearly been drawn thanks to constitutional amendments (unless you're willing to stretch the meaning of "tax" to suit your needs) and a whole history of supreme court opinions over the last 40 years.
  5. So now we should make "being dumb" a protected class of people?
  6. But if you can obtain an ID for free, who is being disenfranchised? (Of course, I would argue that no one is disenfranchised even with the requirement of purchasing an ID, but that doesn't go to this case.)
  7. Well, you might have to pay for a bus ride to a polling place, too. Does that constitute a tax? Also, why does there have to be evidence of voter fraud already in place in order to try to prevent it?
  8. In Indiana, you can get an ID for free. But even if you couldn't, how does that constitute a tax? Scalia's Concurrence
  9. Are there any long-suffering Rangers fans out there??? Apparently Nolan is meeting with Jon Daniels this weekend, and one of them with Ron Washington, too. If they are not both gone by Sunday, I'm going to be pissed.
  10. While I think the entirety of Zip City can be included here, these lines stand out: Keep your drawers on, girl, it ain't worth the fight By the time you drop them I'll be gone And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life
  11. The best album released in November of 1991 is Loveless and not Achtung Baby.
  12. Figured it out. Apparently, www.viachicago.org and viachicago.org do not work. It has to be forums.viachicago.org Sorry if I missed this instruction elsewhere on the site.
  13. For the last week or so, I haven't been able to access viachicago in Firefox. Everytime I do, I get the Apache server page. I've cleared my cache and everything else and cleared up security issues that I thought may have something to do with it, but it's still the same. IE works fine for me on the same computer. What else do I need to do? Thanks.
  14. "Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate! Ack!" I'm still laughing about that a week later.
  15. Most disgusting meal ever? That's ridiculous.
  16. Definitely one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Apologies to the Queen Mary was incredible! I can only hope the new one is just as good.
  17. The best kind of government is one that does as little as possible.
  18. I've only listened to it once, but I liked what I heard. Especially "Jody." Completely agree with you on Destroyer, too. Great, great album.
  19. On their website, it says April 14 in Europe and June 3 for North America. Is it a double album that is essentially the two sides of Will Johnson?
  20. Unfortunately, the barbecue at Stubb's is nothing to write home about. I would recommend visiting one of many other restaurants in Austin (Curras, Manuel's, Eastside Cafe, Threadgills, Suzi's, Romeo's, the list is endless) for a late lunch before heading over to Stubb's to get in line. At least, that's my plan.
  21. Some bad solo songs, with maybe a few good Old 97's songs thrown in.
