  1. It was a big mistake. Bergdahl deserted his fellow soldiers in a war zone and sought refuge with, and may have aided, the enemy. We turned over 5 dangerous men to Qatar, which has already said that the men would be allowed to travel freely within the country. After one year they'll be allowed to return to Afghanistan, where they will likely return to their evil ways. I think this was a trial balloon for an eventual emptying of Gitmo. The administration's execution was ham-fisted and embarrassing - especially the White House photo op with the parents and Susan Rice's assertion that Bergdahl h
  2. No, it is not. At a minimum, he needs to be tried for desertion and given a dishonorable discharge. He should also have to repay the costs of the search efforts. If it is found that he collaborated with the enemy, he should be executed. As an earlier poster said, precedent has been set and it's all good.
  3. Ever carry a pocketknife, box cutter or screwdriver? A concealed handgun is no more of a threat to public safety than either of those. They're just inanimate hunks of plastic and metal in the hands of a sane, careful person. San Antonio (via southern California and parts beyond.)
  4. Poor old Exene sounds like an utter crackpot and open carry (which I do not support) might intimidate people who can't stand the sight of guns, but your point doesn't hold water where concealed carry is in effect. Nobody knows if you're armed (in fact it's a crime to show or 'brandish' your weapon), so nobody gets nervous -- except a would-be thief/mugger/assailant. It's about as close to perfect of a balance between personal defense, public safety and common sense as I can imagine.
  5. I wish I could be in the UK for this Quadrophenia symposium: http://herebytheseaandsand.wordpress.com/
  6. That must be some sort of record. I think I would have moved out of the neighborhood after the second one.
  7. There's also this (Nels): And this (filmed in 1999 by yours truly):
  8. Yep. Monday we learned that our customer was canceling the contract immediately due to budget reasons (our performance was described as 'excellent.') Tuesday I flew to Denver to see the Nels Cline Singers and when I got back Thursday they called to tell me that they wouldn't offer to transfer me to another office. That shocked me, since our (former) CEO had promised that I would always have a job if the contract died. But apparently the new CEO, CFO and VP (seven years with the company between them) don't value 13 years of loyal service and decided that they'd cut me and my co-worker in orde
  9. I hates me some thieves. How's this for the suckitude of life: Last week our VP of operations called to tell me that the company would not be needing my services anymore, after 13 years of service. But at least he wished me a happy birthday at the beginning of the call.
  10. I was thinking about attending Riot Fest in Denver again this year, but Chicago's lineup looks much better. I'll probably skip them both, however.
  11. They weren't even photographed -- that seems atypical. The police chief's comments also seem very unusual.
  12. Judging by the fawning comments made by the chief of police, I guess I was right in assuming that the couple received special treatment due to their celebrity.
  13. I don't know how it works in every state, but I've watched episodes of Cops where neither party wanted to press charges, but they were informed that the law required that they be arrested (due to signs of injury) and the charges were pressed by the state.
  14. I can't help wondering whether their celebrity status kept them from being charged with domestic violence/battery instead.
  15. The entire album makes me smile. I'm very much looking forward to the show(s) in Denver.
  16. They're also releasing a 2013, 40th anniversary of Quadrophenia concert in a zillion different formats. http://thewho.com/blog/story/the-who-celebrate-the-40th-anniversary-of-quadrophenia/ People who bought the recent Super Deluxe Edition of Quadrophenia will not be pleased to hear that a 5.1 mix of the entire album will be available on Bluray, since they only received an 8-song version (supposedly because the original masters couldn't be found ... or something like that.)
  17. Mr. Tweedy has shown himself to be a funny guy, but this was rather flat and uninteresting. He could probably improvise something much funnier.
  18. It wasn't nearly as loud as their show I saw in Orlando in 1982. I was in the stands at the far end of the stadium and I still wound up with ringing ears for days.
  19. I paid $525 (face value) for a single ticket to see the Who in Los Angeles about a dozen years ago. I was looking to buy 3 cheaper tickets for myself, my son and my friend, but when the online sale began I checked for a single ticket and drew one in the front row, so I bought it. My son and my friend ended up about 80 rows behind me. I was just about the only non-celeb in our little roped-off area. I sat next to members of Kiss, Anthrax, Chili Peppers, Ashley Judd, John Cusack and the guy who knocked up Liz Hurley. (He was with a Baywatch girl.)
  20. It comes from a credible source, so it's worth considering, but I found "You will find it along that route–looking elsewhere is pointless" to be a bit overconfident.
  21. Let me know when he starts peddling a bike or riding a human-powered aircraft to all of his engagements and then we'll call it good.
  22. And there are also facts and data that don't support the thesis he espouses. When I was a teenager scientists were warning of an impending ice age, now it's global warming, but perhaps there will be cooling because of diminished solar activity -- and on and on it goes. When someone's argument concludes with 'the science is settled" the first thing I assume is that it's anything but. Add in the fact that trillions of dollars stand to be made and lost and I will always be skeptical of "the sky is falling" proponents of the issue of the day. I'll believe it's a crisis when the loudest propone
