  1. Billy Bragg - I Dreamed I Saw Phil Ochs Last Night
  2. Let's swim to the moon Let's climb through the tide Penetrate the evening That the city sleeps to hide Come on, that's a great rock lyric. Also, I'd put Celebration Of The Lizard up against pretty much any Robert Hunter lyric, and I love Hunter's stuff.
  3. That's too bad that Jerry had such a blind spot regarding the Doors, though it's not surprising. They were almost polar opposites in their approach (theatrical vs. non-theatrical, dark vs. almost hippy-dippy, etc.), but they certainly had some things in common. The Dead started off with Pigpen doing a lot of blues tunes like King Bee and Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, and the Doors were fond of covering Crawling King Snake and so forth. They also have an interesting commonality in that there was a definite hard-bop or free jazz influence. Garcia was into Ornette Coleman, and the Doors were kn
  4. The video isn't great on this, but the audio is just fine: http://youtu.be/OLnXLmPuzDY
  5. I was pleased when I read about that too. Someone posted something online about seeing blood on the diving board of the pool in that last flash-forward. Anyone else catch that? I did not.
  6. I agree that it's kind of goofy, FWIW. I don't believe that the artist's intent was to equate Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old juvenile delinquent, with arguably the greatest figure of the civil rights movement. I suspect that the artist's intent was based on King's quote about a day when his children would be judged "not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Seems that most supporters of the Martin family believe that the boy was profiled because of his skin color. Pretty simple leap there. And clearly, we have not yet reached that day, and may never.
  7. I broke down and pre-ordered the 2-disc version from Amazon. You can't really beat $16.91 for a 2-disc set...whereas the 4-disc one was $100. I'm sure some kind soul somewhere will trade for or post the Isle of Wight show. (Hint hint).
  8. Yeah, I don't think any sane person is saying Trayvon Martin was another MLK. The point is that civil rights in our country still has a long way to go. And those involved in the movement probably view Trayvon as being a martyr on some level, just as MLK was. Like Louie said, those of us who don't particularly like guns, don't like anyone getting shot.
  9. Appearances may matter, but in the presentation of music, I can't ever agree that they matter more than the music itself. That was the basis of the thesis here. And tinnitus, you're entitled to your opinion, but the Dead-bashing can get pretty tedious. I don't suppose the Wilco guys would agree with you either, since they just covered Bird Song, Dark Star, Ripple and Friend of the Devil with Bob Weir.
  10. Probably because the only crime he was guilty of, up until he allegedly assaulted Zimmerman, was Walking while Black.
  11. My thoughts exactly. They just stood there and played their instruments.
  12. I was right with at least part of my prediction: Hank getting to Jesse before Walt, and Skyler apologizing (though she did stick with Walt...surprising). I definitely expect Jesse to flip. Whether he survives to tell the tale is another question. I did not truly foresee the return of Todd and the scary bunch around him, although I mentioned it. Now, I think they will either recruit Walt or try to take him and his family out. Todd clearly has no problem taking out civilians of any age. This could get even more brutal and ugly, and quick.
  13. Seconded. If you listen to too many early versions, it can seem kind of wimpy/cheesy. Bobby developed more as a singer throughout the 70s, and by the time the 80s rolled around, this could be a monster, with beautiful guitar work by Jerry as well.
  14. I've always liked the studio versions of Easy to Love You and Far From Me. Never have found live versions that surpassed them, which is unusual with the Dead.
  15. Can this be streamed online, or is it only for people in your area?
  16. Spent a portion of time on the road today listening to a good chunk of the first set from 8/10/82. Jerry's voice is not what it was in the 70s, but it's not bad, and the band is really tight! Really needed a dose of Brent-era Dead after absorbing so much 70s material lately. A thought occurred to me while I was driving: are there songs that some of you guys don't like, but are generally well-liked and/or considered classic? And conversely, are there songs that are not that well-regarded by many, but that you really like? For me: Tennessee Jed. The more times I hear it, the less I like it.
  17. This is really sad. I remember when I was a kid and had a major accident. Missed 14 days of school. My parents' insurance plan covered all expenses. My dad's employer provided the plan. It was called an indemnity plan: all but obsolete in the age of the HMO. Companies, especially insurance corporations, have become far too greedy. No wonder there is no loyalty anymore.
  18. I have seriously considered getting insurance on my own to see if I could find a better deal than the shitty plan my employers offer. I had to have my appendix out last year, and even with insurance coverage, I still got stuck with a bill for over $8,000. A couple weeks ago, I found out our plan is raising rates 16%. That is why we need single-payer. This ACA law is an experiment that will, I hope, ultimately fail and prove the needed bridge to single payer. It's time for major corporations to stop making millions of off people's misery.
  19. Yeah, who else has a totally creepy song about Joan Crawford? That was one of those deep cuts I always liked hearing on AOR radio back in the day.

  21. If they decide to jump ahead in time a bit, that could be the case. I don't assume they are the show's finale, but Walt is turning 52 at that time. That means there are about 9 months to go until that flash forward is taking place. It will be a wild ride, that's for sure. For those who can't wait until Sunday night to continue the speculation, this was kind of a fun read. Great for Deadheads too: http://theweek.com/article/index/247882/breaking-bad-do-the-final-8-episodes-titles-reveal-the-ending
