  1. Yeah, Van's out of my price range, too, but his voice is still incredible. I'm looking forward to his new one in April. Or is it March? Ah, hell, like it matters. Whenever it leaks...
  2. We Who See the Deep - the riff is lifted wholesale from some other song, no? It's driving me batty. Anybody figure it out yet?
  3. I grabbed their new full length, which leaked ridiculously early, from a blog I frequent. Surprisingly awesome stuff. A little Band of Horses-y, with a side of MMJ. I'll have to check this one out. That's a ridiculously fantastic album cover.
  4. A bit, I'd say. I'm not liking it at all, though, unfortunately. There's too much sludgy stomp, not enough soul in the songs. It really reminds me quite a lot of Rich's solo album, and that is NOT a compliment. Two good songs by my reckoning, the single and Locust Street. The rest I can't imagine ever wanting to hear over anything else they've done.
  5. Theatre: 0, since I refuse to drive two hours to see non-live entertainment. DVD: countless.
  6. Yeah, I think One True Vine is the best thing the SBS sessions yielded. One of my favourite Wilco songs. And that's Jeff singing in the movie! Listen closely.
  7. Still the funniest show on TV by leagues. I'd watch anything that Seth MacFarlane affixes his name to. Uh, excluding that terrible short-lived series he did starring Rob Corddry, that is.
  8. I'm definitely of the latter. Still the lamest of all E6 bands, by far. My current theory is that the album's mystique alone is what's managed to feed its critical reputation over the last decade or so, while much better bands (Of Montreal, The Apples, OTC, et al.) languish in comparitive obscurity. Boo to Jeff Mangum.
  9. Different recording, though. I really like this version, for whatever reason. Possibly more than the album one. http://download.yousendit.com/19E225533F878190
  10. When he's that correct, he doesn't need to be humble. I'll be watching Wilco's clips on YouTube, rather than brave the terrifying waters that the crapfest called SNL has become.
  11. I'm pretty much in that camp, too, although I'd rate it significantly higher than AGIB (which I still strongly feel is the band's weakest disc).
  12. Yes, he was erudite, yes, he had an agile mind and yes, it's also true that he was a bully who was wrong on nearly every issue. I always found him insufferable and I won't miss him. I'm sure his passing was tragic for those who knew him, though.
  13. I won't tell you to fuck off.
  14. I can't wait for this one, personally. Stanton's no Brad Bird, but a colleague of mine who was at WC as an exhibitor stole some time to check out the footage and said it was dazzling. Everything I've heard and read suggests we're in for a visual masterpiece supported by a heart-rending, but ultimately hopeful, moral. I'll be there on opening day, as I'm sure will hundreds of thousands of other folks.
  15. "I have to be leaving now. But I won't let that come between us, okay?" "Okay."
  16. Based on the calibre of people I see when I'm out and about... no. Unless you're in Montreal, where everybody is a fashion model.
  17. If they do it for the music and for us, they'd be in Charleston instead of NYC. That said, yeah, it's about broadening the audience, and no, What Light ain't the thing to play. At all.
  18. Yes, there were a lot of Johnny-come-latelies when YHF dropped, but those who stuck around obviously did so because they love the music just about as much as everybody who'd been listening to the band for ages. Better late than never, no? I didn't know the band existed 'til BT came out, and that's when I became a fan (way back when FM radio was still a viable way of exposing oneself to decent new music - feels like a lifetime ago, huh?).
  19. I don't think it's selling out, but I think it's a dick move to cancel a proper show to appear on a horrible, horrible TV show that's been unwatchable for years.
  20. It's very listenable, given the bitrate. I hadn't even noticed how low it was before checking just now. The album is pretty awesome. I think it's better than Magic Potion, although I didn't think MP was nearly as much of a step down from Thickfreakness and Rubber Factory as some folks seemed to think it was. These guys always ring the bell for me.
  21. Hallelujah, he's ready to go. (Cough. Sorry. Norman was actually pretty cool.)
  22. Well... at least you're trying to be an artist. Heh. We'll talk when you're a decade removed from student life and your parents' treasure trove, give or take. Unless you're directing Nike commercials or music videos, I mean. (The hand-holding explanation: the majority of upper/middle class kids study abroad, travel, go to film festivals, etc. They're not just the only folks with the time and money to enjoy such luxuries, they're the only ones who are really encouraged to follow those pursuits. To wit, nobody's ever told me to travel because, well, I've always been poor, so what's the use?
  23. Didn't watch it - never do - but perusing the list of winners, I've gotta say it: best Oscars ever. I have very few complaints. Of the films that were nominated, the Academy couldn't have gotten it much more right. I'm really pleased to see my favourite directors recognized at last. A buddy of mine and I have been wending our way through their filmography chronologically and were finishing up The Man Who Wasn't There when Joel and Ethan were collecting their much deserved Oscar gold. I CANNOT FUCKING WAIT FOR YIDDISH POLICEMAN'S UNION. Coens + Chabon + Judaica = holy shit, I will adore thi
