  1. Not really. All that article makes the case for is that wins/losses are extremely team-based statistics. Ryan's winning percentage vs. his team's percentage is also misleading there. If they want to prove anything, it should be the team winning percentage in games that Ryan isn't pitching. He brings the team percentage up significantly. There are some okay arguments against him, but wins/losses isn't it.
  2. I hate all 3. If I had to pick one song though, "Stranglehold" beats anything Seger or Ryder have ever done, but only if you're drunk.
  3. The Tigers released Dmitri Young after tonight's game. I'm pretty okay with that.
  4. Not a bad song at all...
  5. I hate how on TV they keep emphasizing how great/lucky the defense was in making this no-hitter happen...not that it isn't true, but it's too obvious to bother spending that much time on. Every no-hitter, ever, has been aided by great/lucky defense. It's impossible to have a no-hitter without it.
  6. That's the guy from the Detroit Cobras, right?
  7. Why did his lawyer have to do it?
  8. That views count isn't accurate. I read this thread earlier and it still read 0 afterwards. So who knows how many people have read the thread... That being said, I like Klosterman, but I haven't read his new book, so I can't answer your question.
  9. I grew up in Detroit, and he's never done anything for me.
  10. You hitting the mute button is what solidified the no hitter for Sanchez. Congratulations, bobbob.
  11. That's awesome! (the no-hitter, not the tiny crowd) Did you watch the game? Wouldn't that be something if Randy Johnson completes his no-hitter tonight (so far he's got it going through 6)? No no-hitters in a couple years...two in one night would be nutty.
  12. Wow, pretty weird that he shaved mid-game. But that 'stache had to go. Giambi had one of the worst moustaches in all of sports.
  13. Thunderbirds Are Now! have a new album coming out in a couple weeks. That should be worth checking out.
  14. On a slightly different note...I understand that this happened while filming for some TV project, so footage exists. I'm just curious how long you all expect it to take before it's on YouTube.
  15. Pennant races are heating up, and Baseball Tonight is doing a countdown of all time best bloopers? Lame.
  16. Went to the Cubs/Giants game. Bought this ticket pretty much just to boo Barry Bonds. That was fun. Bonds also hit a homerun. So I got to experience booing him, and seeing him hit a tater. That's about all I could ask for in a game between two teams I don't care about. I love baseball.
  17. heh, i sort of wish i was there for the football game. oh well.
  18. I'm pretty sure everyone had high expectations for Hanley Ramirez.
  19. Verlander was bad in his 3-4 starts last year, but obviously excellent this year. I dont' put a lot of stock in a few appearances that a player makes before he is ready. If that guy has dominated in the minors, though, it is a good indication that he should dominate in the majors. Only rarely does a guy get lit up in AA and be great in the majors. But to make a good prediction, you have to have both. Stats tell you how good a guy has been, and are a good indicator of how good he will be, but good scouting can give you a good idea for why he's been that way. Bad scouting can you a worse i
  20. Well, I think looking at numbers means more than traditional scouting, but both are really necessary to really know how good a player may turn out to be. The prime example is when it comes to pitching. The numbers are more indicative than traditional scouting when determing just how well hitters will be able to hit a guy. But at the same time, traditional scouting is still necessary. If you have two pitchers with similar minor league stats, you have to look at who has the better mechanics. And then once you do that, you have to decide whether the guy with the worse mechanics will become
  21. For the record, I think that the rift among baseball fans is stupid. A lot of fans who value more traditional stats think that sabermatricians don't love the the game in the same way that they do. I think that this is stupid. Following the game in a different way has no berring on how much a fan loves the game. Likewise, a lot of sabermatricians think that fans who still value more traditional fans are stupid. And I hate that too. I generally favor a lot of the newer stats as I feel like they do a better job of really encompassing everything players can do to contribute to their team.
  22. I do feel like the vast majority of the great clutch hitters in the game were great in non-cluth situations too. A great hitter is a great hitter.
  23. I don't know that there are a lot of people who say clutch hitting does not exist. Those who trust traditional baseball stats/ideas say, yes, clutch hitting absolutely exists. Sabermatricians in general say, "maybe". I think personally I split the difference. Most players play roughly the same regardless of the situation, but there seem to be some players who do play significantly better/worse in clutch situations. I think clutch hitting exists for some guys, but not for everyone. And I feel pretty good about that opinion. I think everyone can agree that not all players perform the sa
  24. I would imagine that both those sets of numbers are way higher than their numbers against the rest of the league, though. And that is why I hate them. Although I have a very begrudging respect for Jermaine Dye. I'm not sure why, although it might be because he is awesome. I don't like that he is awesome, but I have no choice but to accept it. Crede is a good ballplayer, but he's definately not as good on average as he is against the Tigers. It seems like Dye is pretty much awesome all the time. I really want to dislike Jermaine Dye, but I just can't. I wish he'd cool the fuck down whe
