  1. With a little bit of hard work, maybe next year we can be #1!!!
  2. Regardless of whether one feels that the death penalty is a just punishment for murder or not, doesn't it reflect poorly on our society that we executing people? Assuming that it is fair, isn't it still sad for it to be necessary?
  3. I'm not sure exactly why, but for some reason the whole "Hey, at least our human rights record is better than China!" argument doesn't make me feel much better.
  4. Tigers bats woke up tonight!
  5. This is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm not saying that he wasn't genuinely troubled or that that wasn't expressed in his music. I'm just saying that the whole notion that it is "nonsense" to imagine what he might have done if he hadn't died, and that he somehow had to die or something is absurd. He was not meant to die or preparing to die anymore than anyone else with a substance abuse problem is meant to die. He was a dude who happened to be the singer in a rock and roll band. He wasn't living out some sort of pre-ordained messianic rock and roll mission.
  6. Sure, they get credit for influencing a lot of good to great bands. But pretty much everyone that you listed took what the Doors did and improved upon it greatly. Morrison may have become an archetype type of rock singer, but so many who emulated him did it better than he did.
  7. This type of romanticism about Morrison's lyrics and death are probably about 90% of the reason that there's been such a backlash. The cult of Morrison is ridiculous compared to his marginal talents. I personally think he was a very good singer, but he's been idolized for his lyrics for years, and quite frankly, most of his lyrics are garbage and if he hadn't died when he did, I don't think his legend would be even a tenth the size. You say he "prepared himself to die" but isn't that just code for being an alcoholic? Alcoholism and death shouldn't be romanticize as some sort of rock star d
  8. Yeah, it says they're 1-10, but they've won 2 games. I agree that the instinct is to look home if that flyball is the first out of the inning. But it was the second out, and the right move in that instance is different. Polanco is a pro and should know what he's going to do in any given situation before it happens. Cabrera could have yelled to him, but he should have known on his own.
  9. It's not just the errors though. He's made some just plain boneheaded moves too. One example from the game I was at on Saturday: In the bottom of the 8th, 2-0 Chicago, and the White Sox batting with the bases loaded and one out, Polanco catches a tricky pop-up in shallow right. Rather than throw the runner out at first base for the final out of the inning (who he would have had easily -- he was half way to second by then and it would have been a short throw) he instead throws home, even though the runner at third was not trying to score, and the runner at first would have ended the inning.
  10. It's a combination of slumps and a shitload of injuries. Granderson, Willis, Zumaya and Rodney are now on the DL, Guillen is out of the line-up for a bit but not on the DL, and Sheff and Cabrera are still hurting a bit while playing. And Kenny Rogers sucks. And the whole bullpen sucks. But the guys that don't suck are all still slumping too. It's a combination of bad luck with injuries and just plain old shitty play. I can't believe how awful Polanco's fielding has been. And everyone's hitting (other than Carlos Guillen before he got hurt, Clete Thomas and Brandon Inge -- wtf?). I'm s
  11. "Teenage FBI" and "Things I Will Keep" are the only two I really like from that album, and a couple songs like "Hold On Hope" really bug me. I do like Earthquake Glue a lot.
  12. That picture should have been in the Mitchell Report.
  13. Do the Collapse may be underrated, but it's also not that great. Doesn't even come anywhere near their top 5, IMO.
  14. The Doors pretty much sounded just like the Animals, but not as good. I'm not really sure what they had in common with the VU other than touching on some darker subject matter (though not the same darker subject matter that Lou Reed wrote about).
  15. The Doors are horribly overrated. If not for Ray Manzarek's production work with X, he would be one of the most insufferable people in all of rock music, right behind his frontman. Krieger and Densmore are talented musicians but not good enough to make up for Morrison's lyrics and Manzarek's general awfulness.
  16. Among the 4 lists, 9 of the 15 GBV albums have been named. That's not bad.
  17. 1. Alien Lanes 2. Isolation Drills 3. Bee Thousand 4. Vampire on Titus 5. Propeller That's if we're just counting albums. If EPs count, then The Grand Hour would be on there somewhere.
  18. Weather and climate are not the same thing. I'm just saying.
  19. I saw them in Detroit last weekend and they sounded great.
