  1. Same here, except I have one under his name. "Ready for Freddie". I think Hubbard considered that his strongest session as far as his own playing was concerned. I haven't listened to it in probably seven or eight years, but I remember it being outshined by other things I was listening to at the time. It probably wasn't out or free enough for me at the time. I'll have to add it to my pile.
  2. Musicians are typically the least likely to remember everything they played on.
  3. Thanks! Complete or not, that list boggles the mind. I forgot he appears on this one, which I've had in my on-deck pile for a month, or so: I'll have to play that one tonight.
  4. Here's an interesting article Freddie wrote which was originally published in 1991. Among other things he talks about his influences and predecessors, his contemporaries and some newer trends in music. http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=31496 I've been trying to find his complete discography, but haven't had any luck.
  5. Harvest Moon is not my most recent cassette purchase (I still buy cassettes sometimes), but it is likely the most recently released album that I have on cassette.
  6. Some people have a talent for collaboration, and aren't well suited to be solo artists. I think Jay fits that category. Not finding success as a solo act does not mean your talent is inferior to those who are successful.
  7. One theory is that Tweedy knew that he wasn't completely ready, or wasn't confident enough to be THE driving force in a band. He probably knew he needed a foil, and had it not been Jay it would likely have been someone else. Perhaps Tweedy working with the Minus Five and with Billy Bragg is evidence that he was still trying to develop his leadership skills while having a safety net in the form of co-leaders. I never saw Wilco with Jay, but I saw them on Austin City Limits and some other tv programs. Granted, that's not the same as being in the actual audience. My impression was that the
  8. Here's an obituary with a fairly decent (brief) overview of his career. http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/12/30/americas/obits.php
  9. His overuse of unnecessary quotation marks is kind of annoying.
  10. Jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard has passed away. http://www.metafilter.com/77808/Freddie-Hubbard-1938-2008

    News, news, news

I found that puzzling, too. Maybe it's a subtle refernce to their previous live DVD being shelved, which caused a lot of disappointment among Wilco fans.
  12. I think Blue Note is just trying to cash in on Rudy Van Gelder's name/reputation with the RVG series reissues.
  13. Yeah, this is where Mosaic really shines. My beef, I suppose, is with their collections of previously released albums (plus alternater takes). In a perfect world, Mosaic would be able to focus on releasing sets of unheard music, rather than basically reissuing catalog titles that shouldn't be out of print in the first place.
  14. I have the Mosaic Sam Rivers box and the Grachan Moncur set. Most of those titles were out of print at the time of the Mosaic releases, but now most if not all of it is available as single cds. I would prefer to own the individual discs (anyone want to work out a trade?). To my tastes, aside from the cover photos which are classy, Mosaic boxes are visually very dull and, as is the case with the Rivers and Moncur boxes, they don't always (or ever?) have reproductions of the original cover art. The Rivers and Moncur releases came out during an absolutely brilliant period of album cover artist
  15. Doesn't the Fender 600 have a six inch speaker? That might limit your options since it's a less common size for guitar amps. I've heard great things about Weber speakers over the last few years on various guitar forums/websites. Sounds like you can't really go wrong with them. Recently I've been hearing a lot of raves for Tone Tubby hemp speakers. Jimmy Herring talks about them here: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30843 The bass, the drums and the piano were done pretty fast but I had to redo the guitars because in the studio, when we cut live, I was playing through
  16. I dug this one out last night. It's probably been four years since I last heard it:
  17. Thank goodness. I guess I'm old fashioned in a lot of ways. I just don't like to see someone sitting at a computer on stage during a concert. I had to chuckle at the Kings of Leon comment in that interview.
  18. I haven't seen Wilco in a while. Please assure me that Jorgensen is still playing piano, or something resembling a piano, and not just fiddling with a laptop throughout the show.
  19. Something Happened to Me Yesterday Avenue would be pretty cool, but would requie a large sign. Naming a street "Gotta Get Away" might not be good for property values.
  20. Well, now that you mention it, our governor is one corrupt son of a bitch. Maybe I should have thoght that offer through a bit more thoroughly.
  21. If you'd be willing to make an even trade, I'll give you some of Georgia's incompetence in exchange for some Illinois corruption.
