this one does seem to draw on the past, and it seems they they realized they better turn the rock back on, or they were done. it's nice to hear some loud ass peter buck guitar in the world again. i've listened to it a few times, so as usual with REM, i haven't quite absorbed it. even if the lyrics don;t meet the expectations , sometimes a simple song is better than a masterwork left undone. i'll bet that some of these songs translate very well into rocked the fuck out live versions.

i just pinpointed it. after hearing the line" back in your old neighborhood, the cigarettes taste so good" i was hooked . It was the time , the place, the guitar noise.......... it truly was about "Being There".

they did a number of shows with Hiatt a few years ago, after some of them backed him on "Master of disaster". i have a few shows from that tour and they are all pretty solid. Lately, Hiatt has been doing mostly solo work. An R.L Burnside song shuffled on just as i started to post..... strange
