  1. My main problem with the sports industry is the degree to which it's publicly subsidized. Most research, as I understand it, suggests that cities and states do not make the money that they shell out for stadiums back in tax revenue, etc. I know that a lot of businesses are publicly subsidized to various extents, but here we have public subsidies mostly enabling a handful of people (owners and players) becoming fabulously rich. The year after the Bears had Soldier Field redone (largely on the public's dime), the Tribune wrote a story about how their profit margins skyrocketed as a result of
  2. I think I like it better than the last one, but not as much as ATYCLB. I think that ATYCLB has some good songs on it, even though the production is pretty boring.
  3. I think a lot of focus is placed on their production/style changes from album to album, but I think the biggest deficit they have is the songwriting. I mean, these were the guys who wrote One, All I Want Is You, etc. The songs just aren't there. And a lot of the lyrics just seem like a mish-mash of the old songs.
  4. It was recently announced that he was fighting prostate cancer and his broadcast duties were cut back significantly.
  5. My church is working with an Iraqi refugee family of 10 that just arrived 2 weeks ago. One of our church members (who is undergoing an intense round of chemo) has moved out of her house and into the living room of another church couple so that they can move in at a steeply discounted rent. The family is really excited and optimistc. I know that their life will be tough to start here, but it is pretty exciting stuff.
  6. Any indication as to whether he had the rights to the articles?
  7. Like I said, it worked for me right after you posted it. The cost was $24.99 for the Summerteeth 2 LP w/CD.
  8. Worked for me a short while ago. Now not working.
  9. I'm surprised that there isn't more buzz on here about the Nats' GM skimming bonuses. The highest level executive likely actively undermining his organization by over-inflating the value of prospects so that they'll get higher signing bonuses and he'll get a bigger piece.

  12. A minor deal, but undoubtedly a win for the Bulls. So, that Devin Harris shot....

  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNpsy_qBnoU The aforementioned MLK arrangement, althought this is performed by a different group. It's nice.
  15. The VocalEssence Ensemble did an arrangement of U2's MLK tonight on Prairie Home Companion (with nary a mention of U2, natch). I do think that the business side of U2 is ridiculous now (if it ever wasn't). I used to defend them quite a bit. To wit: Expensive fan club pre-sales The ridiculous collector's edition packages they apparently now sell with every album. Bono stating that the band should quit if they ever put out 2 bad albums in a row, then signing a 20 year contract with LiveNation a couple years later. The first two seem to be blatant efforts to squeeze out the dollars from
  16. I wonder if this dude has purchased the rights to reproduce these interviews in book form.
  17. This is kind of silly. This thread has 12 pages. There are plenty of huge U2 fans on here--people like me who even like Pop! I am not too high on this album yet, but I have yet to give it a listen on a long car ride, etc.
  18. Shouldn't Manny have a question mark after his name?

  20. Just read this on another board. Haven't tried to substantiate it:
