"If I ever found myself on the playing field of Florida's baseball Marlins, wearing said team's colors, I would turn my inner compass to the Heavens, and pray for immediate release of Hurricane Katrina 2" - Winston Churchill, 1944

In terms of ammenities...there really aren't any. But I'm perfectly content with beer, hot dogs, and a good seat.

Agreed. That's all I need, too.

I think my love of RFK is partly sentimental since I have great memories of Redskins games with my dad when I was a kid, too. I was never sure how well it would work as a baseball stadium, but am glad it is still being used. Here's to hoping the Nats can put some more excitement on the field than they're currently doing--I'd love to see that upper deck bounce again like it did back in the Skins' glory days.

They're not going to be very good while they're still at RFK. So maybe they'll get the upper deck bouncing at the new place, but I don't think it will happen before they move.

I don't really have a team in the NL, but the closest to it is the Nats. My brother had season tickets last year, and his enthusiasm for them rubbed off on me a little bit. Although I was definately more into them last year than this year. Maybe after he moves back there I'll be a fan again.

It still feels a little weird to me that DC actually has a team now. The O's were my "hometown" team growing up, even tho I grew up in VA. I haven't lived in the DC area in many years, but people sometimes ask me if I'm a big Nats fan when they find out I grew up around there--and I just kind of look at them quizzically. :dontgetit

I have a friend who grew up in Maryland outside of DC, and is still a big O's fan. Sports loyalties don't change that easily, just because there's a new team in town.

I live in Chicago but am still a Detroit sports fan. Same sort of thing I guess. Proximity to a new team will never be strong enough to cancel out a history with an old one.

Absolutely. Although I will admit that time and distance can weaken old loyalties a bit. Of all my old sports loyalties, my connection to the O's has held up the longest. I'm pretty indifferent to the Redskins these days (and pro football, in general). Same can be said for the Caps.

The interesting thing is that my loyalties have been strong enough that I haven't really picked up any new favorite teams, either. Earlier this year I started going to Mets games and it made me realize just how much I really miss going to baseball games. And it has been fun to follow them this year--but part of me feels like I'm betraying something.(hey, at least they're in the NL!) :lol

For the record, if the White Sox are stealing signs, it's the good old fashioned way (or they aren't doing a good job of it). Their home/away OPS is nearly identical, despite the fact that they play in a hitter's park.

You left out the really good shit where Ozzie said Mark Mulder wouldn't make the White Sox and other such things. :D

Congrats to Carlos Delgado on hitting his 400th career home run.

And if someone doesn't throw at Pujols' head, I'm going to write a curt letter to Willie Randolph.

Mulder wouldn't make a couple of team's rotations. The Marlins may be able to fit him in long relief or something, though.

GO RED SOX!!!!

Indeed!!

I have not been around these parts much (with a new job and all) but this past weekend sort of freaked me out. I am just old enough to remember the last Boston Massacre (in 1978) and that sense of helplessness was all too familiar.

But this west coast trip is where they turn it all around ...

In terms of just watching a game, it's a damn good park. There are a lot of good seats that don't cost all that much (the lower part of the upper deck - 400's section - is really great). It's easy to get to by Metro and by car...plus I can fondly remember the dozens of Redskins games my Dad and I saw there.

I plan to watch every game out West, sleep be damned. This is where the season turns around...

I agree. It's old and kind of dingy, but it's really accessible, there aren't really any bad seats, and you get to watch the big Marine helicopters ferrying gov't VIPs flying overhead to and from Andrews or wherever they go.

Ction, have you been since the "grand re-opening"? I'm hearing about lots of new concessions -- brisket, microbrews, stuff like that -- I went once right after the All Star break. I went once right after the A.S. break but just stuck with my standard MGD and hotdog.

Depends on the depth of history, but OK. For me, I need to be able to get to the live games regularly to forge that connection, which I guess is why I didn't assimilate into the Orioles collective in the 5 years that I lived in Virginia before the Nats came around.

I went to a game last week. They did seem to have some extra concession carts set up with Italian sausages, more pricey beer, etc. Still, compared to places like Camden Yards or FedEx Field, it's still way spartan. But people who need all the fancy BS tend to be people who don't really care about watching the game, anyway...

As much as I enjoy Camden (it is a lovely place to sit and take a nap while the action on the field lulls you to sleep), lately I've been "slummin' it" and finding new love for the old "ugly" stadiums in the league. Spent a decent amount of time at Shea this year, and what was previously my least favorite stadium in the leage has somehow earned a spot in my heart. Accessibility sucks if you're not coming by train--parking is a mess, the amenities at the stadium are somewhat lacking, the building itself is a big blue ugly concrete bowl with airplanes flying overhead every few minutes, and the whole thing sometimes smells kind of funny--yet I've developed an affection for it. I don't need to be snacking on crabcakes between innings, anway--give me a beer, a hot dog, and a decent view and I'm good. No surprise that the new stadium is buing built, but I'm starting to think it will be a shame to see the ol' blue concrete bowl go. (I can't imagine how much tix at the new place are going to cost!)

Couldnt have said it better myself. I am going to miss that big blue waste of space. New stadiums with ample luxury boxes and pools for kids, etc. cater to folks that are there for reasons other than to watch a baseball game. That kills me.

Good night for the Mets last night --

1. Comeback from 6 runs down to win in walkoff fashion.

2. Delgado's 400th HR.

3. Glavine doesnt need surgery.

4. Pick up Shawn Green and $6.3 mil from the DBacks for next to nothing.
