shabba rich
With each record, they've turned a corner, and as they did, some people got off and others got on. This time, the road they turned onto brought them a few blocks from home - closest to where they started (in my opinion). For those who got in the car... around YHF and AGIB, it's been fun, but I'm sticking around. And I can see where this record might bring back some of fans that got out a few records ago. Peace. And all those idiots who have still labelled the band as "alt-country" despite the past 5 or 6 years will suddenly and unwittingly be closer to the mark again.
wilketon
I loved Wilco's soundscaping, but was it supposed to cover up something? Think about that. At least here it is all laid bare, and damn you to hell if you don't like it. easy there. damn you to hell if you don't like it? anyways, i don think the soundscaping was there to cover something up and that's why they were so succesful at it. it was them dissecting and assembling what they wanted to create some amazing textures and a very engaging listening experience. it was them working with concepts of sonic soundscapes and environments and playing around with well written pop songs in a way to make them more interesting. DEFINATELY not them trying to cover something up in my opinion. more like taking things away and adding other things to enhance it all together. but that discussion is kind of seperate from this one about Sky Blue Sky. which i agree with others in that it's definately about musicianship this time around. while i think it's "same-ness" as a complete listen might require a couple times, i know that's its definately full of some great, great stuff. i'm excited to keep hearing it. shabba rich
Just to add my 2 cents, I loved the new record on my one and only listen, but with reservations. I agree the soulful vibe is a departure, and change is always hard to adjust to for everybody, but I also agree the Wilco way is to defy expectations, so full marks there. The songwriting is fantastic, and the musicianship, particularly Messrs. Cline and Stirratt, is jaw-droppingly brilliant. But I also agree with those who say there's not a wide enough range of sound, and that the addition of just one raw rocker would make the album more complete to me. Add me to the list of those disappointed that Glenn was never given a chance to really let em rip like he can. But I think this is a perfect album to introduce Wilco to some of my friends who were intimidated by the noise of the previous albums. And I suspect that I will be loving it, without reservation, sometime in late May.
Wilco LP #7
I keep hearing that this is John's best playing, but the way that this album is mixed, i can hardly feel the bass
a.miller
i can hardly feel the bassYou need a higher fidelity audio system. No, really...John's groove with Glenn from some recent live shows I've heard is really astounding. I think on AGIB there was only one "hooky" baseline (handshake drugs) and on this album all the lines are just groovy and wonderful.

muller
There are similarities for sure.
Nobody Girl
Definitely. And for some reason, it also reminds me of Strawberry Wine by Ryan Adams.
radiokills
Experimentation - Doing something you haven't done before. SBS is uncharted territory for them. It's rock, familiar territory, but it has a new vibe, kinda 70s soul - something they haven't explored...until now. It's experimenting, it's just not your death-grip strict definition of experimentation. Experimentation means out of the norm, not a shitload of noises that defines your music for some 10 odd years. Progressiveness - Pushing the envelope. SBS pushes the envelope...straight the other way. Wilco's spent years pushing the envelop in the "texture" direction, and now they've gone straight the other way (the structural way). They're pushing the envelope. They've changed their direction, and it's damn well progressive because they are defining a new Wilco. Unique - Singular in and of itself, no replications. This is a unique sound. It mixes old rock, new soul, and everything Wilco has ever achieved, and cooked a damn good stew out of it. I can't see how this isn't unique, Wilco has never gone in this territory yet. Soundscaping is the old Wilco. The new Wilco is about musicianships. I loved Wilco's soundscaping, but was it supposed to cover up something? Think about that. At least here it is all laid bare, and damn you to hell if you don't like it. jesus calm the fuck down

bobfrombob
Either Way really didn't have that great an impact on me yesterday as I listened to this record 3 or 4 times. This morning when I woke up, it was on a loop in my brain. That's all I've got - can't explain it but I though you might want to I thought I should tell you anyway

It's a totally different place now that we actually have a wilco album to discuss. Glad to see that I wasn't the only one... Great minds.

dennis
i hear traces of The Band all over this album. Mostly in the keys and some of the grooves they change to out of nowhere.
