jakobnicholas
it's a complete thought, filled in with beauty, sadness, soul and white boy funk. and i mean that in a good way. while there is not a classic "rocker" on this album, it seem like it wouldn't make sense or coherently fit with the rest of the songs. I immediately thought of Bennett's quote in the IATTBYH documentary where he tells Jeff they should play more "rockers". I love the "rockers" in Being There....and they give a great ebb and flow to the album. But for some reasoon, I don't have a need for one on SBS. Though, I must say, some of the slow builds in a few songs are nice...while you can't call them "rockers", they DO rock out...and will be fun live. I agree with your description "beautiful". Guest Jules
STYHFBTAMAGIBSBS I have to say, your album order (order of preference, that is) is very unique.
Sir Stewart
I don't know the McCartney song that's been mentioned here, but the lyrics of 'Hate It Here' remind me of 'My Brave Face'.
quarter23cd
Though, I must say, some of the slow builds in a few songs are nice...while you can't call them "rockers", they DO rock out...and will be fun live.I think if you do a quick intro-scan of each song on the album it sounds pretty downtempo, but Wilco's new thing seems to be building up to a "rock-out" section in the middle of songs. Quite a few of these songs I find myself cranking up loud in the car (Seeds/Face/Walken/Shake). I think the interesting thing is that all of these songs I can see going in two possible directions in a live setting--they could just as easily get amped up into full-blown "rockers" as they could be stripped down for a solo-acoustic show, so it would be kind of neat to hear how these things might mutate. MattZ
My wife thinks this is a jamband album. I wasn't going to be the first to go there, but I have thought that on the last couple of listens. And I predict a Phish vs. Wilco thread starts within 2 days. I will organize the pool if people want to take the over or under.

quarter23cd
My wife thinks this is a jamband album. She's not exactly wrong. People keep bringing up how many of the songs have the feel of being sketches that open themselves up to further jamming/improv in a live setting. That is pretty much the unwritten code of jam-world. How 'bout it Wilco-nation? You assimilated the krautrock. Now can you dig the patchouli?

darkstar
I'm a huge Dead fan, but I don't see SBS as anything near a jam-band record. Sure there are some longish solos and whatnot but they are more jazz tinged (to my ears) and have a recognizable begining, middle, and end. Listening to the Dead you can go off into a thousand different directions during a jam, but on this album the jams (as they are) are way more anchored than that deep-space stuff the Dead used to do. Or maybe I'm just not doing enough bong hits when I listen to SBS

EL the Famous
My wife thinks this is a jamband album. and she's right...they started down that path w/ AGIB and this just firms it up. It really isn't that different from a Widespread Panic album or, at least, what I would expect one to sound like as I don't actually own any.
mhertweck
I hope I'm not being a pain (oh God been living in England too long!) but I missed the stream because it was in the middle of the night here and didn't get the email till the next morning. Would anyone please send me SBS or tell me how I can hear it at this point? I can handle FLAC or any other kind of files. awatt
I've listened to this over and over for last few days and I can now say with utter confidence it is far and away the best album ever made! I laughed, I cried, I danced, I pondered life's mysteries....
