Guest Speed Racer
I remember when I didn't used to like this song.
Guest Jules
Same here. I actually used to skip it. Now, I sometimes skip TO it.
LouieB
One of my absolute faves on BT. LouieB
Guest Speed Racer
I love the distortion on Jeff's vocals.. It really adds to the emotion of the song.
nun4db
I love this song, and I've always been surprised that they never play it. I thought it would have fit very nicely into those very loud, noisy post-AGIB live sets, especially since it has that long, drawn out section at the end. I could see Nels going crazy over that part. Guest Jules
I've always loved the drums on this song too. Straight forward, nothing fancy, but that bass drum just kicks your ass.
cusacker
i would love nothing more than to see this song make a return on the upcoming tour! cough, shepherds bush, cough.
Sir Stewart
I love the "doo doo doo doo" when Jeff catches up with everyone else.
Twisted Acres
I love the "doo doo doo doo" when Jeff catches up with everyone else. Couldn't agree with you more, Sir Paul... and the chord that's being played under that is dreamy, too.
Is Chicago Is Not Chicago
Same here. I actually used to skip it. Now, I sometimes skip TO it. me too. and only just recently too. wonderful song.
So Long
I love how during the buildup, you can hear Jeff say "one more" right after the triplet drum fill! So effing good.
a.miller
I love the rhyming with "Made us all want to feel like stars....Rental cars....tinted windows...." just awesome.
bleedorange
It's always been one of my favorites off BT, too. I listened to AM yesterday and realized that any one of those last three songs could fit in well with a current Wilco show. Especially with Nels on steel.
froggie
i love the instrumental build-up midway through it... actually i love the whole songpity they've left it behind
moxiebean
I especially love the weary sarcasm of the lyrics.
awatt
I love the ending....and the beginning....and the middle, too! I guess all this historyis just a mystery to me. Jeff sounds so innocent on this one, just beginning to cope with rock stardom, or something like that.
winter party person
to me, the ending jam of this song is the sound of Wilco leaving the limitations of Alt-Country behind and turning into the great band that they are now.
cryptique
If I had a nickel for every time I've heard or read the phrase "the limitations of alt-country" over the last five years...
winter party person
i love alt country Wilco (and Uncle Tupelo) as much as the next man, i just think the song is a pivotal point in Wilco's growth.
droe77
My absolute all time favorite song
welch79
i need to listen to the older wilco material. great stuff. thanks for the reminder.
Guest Speed Racer
Gosh, I am SO proud this turned into a two-page thread. This really is a heck of a song. JHamm's live DVDs from the 1997-2000 era with this song are really off the hook.
yankhotelfox
Wanna hear a fun story?? OK. One week ago today, I was in AZ for the first time ever. As we were about to pull into the Day's Inn Flagstaff, Being There Disc 1 happened to be at the end. I got the chills and a big smile when I heard, "Hotel, in Arizona...." It was a very cool moment. Plus, I was in a rental car (no tinted windows) to boot.
TheMaker
A great song from a flawless rekkid! Along with Misunderstood and Sunken Treasure, probably the most important song on BT from a band-growth standpoint.
fortuneinmyhead
ok, so i live in Arizona & have always wondered what hotel the song refers to? (if any) my best guess is probably Hotel Congress in Tucson, because they seem like the kind of place that might do that. ... plus i'm sure wilco went over very well in tucson.
