jakobnicholas
(If I was the Rolling Stone editor): ART DIRECTOR: What cover would you prefer? I've got a great new photo of Wilco. OR...I've got a photo of a couple ladies from that new film, Grindhouse. ME: Let's put Wilco on the cover. They've earned it. Let me see the photos. ART DIRECTOR: Here's the Wilco photo. ME: Wow! That's phenomenal! ART DIRECTOR: And here's the photo of the Grindhouse Girls.. ME: (gasp) ART DIRECTOR: Sir? ME: (still gasping) ART DIRECTOR: Sir?.....um....which photo do you prefer? ME: Could you hand me that Wilco photo again? ART DIRECTOR: Sure, here you go. ART DIRECTOR: Uh, Sir...why are you crumpling up my Wilco photo?
Edie
It looks like the Editor's internal conversation went more like "Which group has a 5-letter name.....Velvet Revolver, no... Maroon5, no... R.Kelly, that's 7... OK great, Wilco is the only one. I suppose we'll have to use it anyway, even though research shows no one knows who they are."
darkstar
Wait! You mean there are words printed on that cover?
Somnambulist
Wilco's name has actually been on the cover before. We were just throwing out a bunch of old Rolling Stones in my library and I came across it. I can't remember who was on the cover though. Here we go. I remembered:
creativetype
Rolling Stone is printed right here in Stillwater, Oklahoma, USA. I do a lot of work with those guys .... maybe I should head over there and check out the press proofs. (To read the Wilco article, I mean ... not to look at the cover or anything)

bobbob1313
Rose McGowan looks altered, but I like to think Rosario is au naturale.
Analogman
I'd say that all photos in magazines are cleaned up and altered - more so the photos used on the cover. That looks like one of those countless men's magazines - sad - I recall when RS use to be about the long interview - and nice photos (nudies included) taken on real film, by real artists. I think Rolling Stone's sales would shoot up if they included nudies of Rosario Dawson, on real film or otherwise.
Analogman
That's what it is about of course - getting your attention with the cover.

bobbob1313
That makes them look substantially less hotter. Oh wait, no. It does the opposite...

As another person who does a boatload of image manipulation for magazines, I can say with confidence that every single photograph you see in any major magazine has had a minimum of 5 minutes of retouching done to it. I think Rose McGowan has some work done to herself, cosmetologically speaking. If you see her on last week's cover of Entertainment Weekly, it doesn't even look like her face. Same with the RS cover.
