Petition to re-instate Jay Bennett

Recommended Posts

While IATTBYH offered some insight into the unraveling of their relationship, I don't think it's fair for any of us to use it as our basis for understanding what happened. It was probably just the tip of the iceberg.

Watching their dialogue in the movie makes me nauseous and made me sort of happy to see him go.

Oh, and Nels is better.

I was watching the film again the other day, and it reminded me how much Jeff has changed. It was almost as if the moment Jeff and Jay split, was when Jeff started to look happier.

I read a review of SBS the other day, that was almost complaining that because Jeff is happier, more content (and healthier), he's lost some kind of edge. I like how SBS is the sound of a content person.

Haven't read the thread, just the title, but here goes: If you don't like Nels Cline in Wilco, you are free to go. Jay hasn't been in Wilco for almost 5 years, so to think that people would be over this by now would be more than reasonable, There is no law saying that if you liked a previous Wilco record, you have to like this one. Unfortunately, this one is here and now. So if this one isn't for you, move on to whatever band you're into now. No harm, no foul.

Well, until Izzy, Slash and Axel Rose get their act together and release a face melting album again, I think I'll stay right here and bitch about Nels.

The beatles never regressed.

Of course not. They simply couldn't, technically spoken. They were crap to begin with.

Yes, I like SBS, I think it is gorgeous, yet another new direction the band are heading towards. My favorite is Summerteeth, mostly because of the utmost dark lyrics - which I personally prefer to brighter ones, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the more mature, content lyrics of SBS are any worse - and not because of the production.

I also like Jay Bennett's music a hell of a lot, one of my favorite songs ever is "Curiosity".

To sum it up: I think that Jay Bennett is better off without Wilco, as he can go on doing his stuff - which he clearly wanted to impose upon Jeff who also clearly didn't want that anymore - and Jeff can go on doing his own stuff and is better off without Jay too.

Everone's happy.

Ouch. Lennon and Harrison just rolled over. If this was a Beatles forum, I'd put up a fight.

I hated the album at first.

But the past few days I've listened to it constantly.

It's not the masterpiece people are proclaiming it as; a lot of the lyrics are kind of trite and straight forward, and I'm sorry "Shake It Off" is still a terrible song, and the rockers are corny as hell.

That being said, it's not a terrible album. There are some beautiful melodies, and some of the songs do have heh a lot of emotional depth. the title track is great, "What Light" is great, and "On and On and On", though a bit sentimental, is moving in it's own way.

Even a lot of the songs with terrible lyrics ("Either Way", "Hate it Here") have good melodies.

It's not a masterpiece, but it does have it's own merits. I hope it continues to grow on me; I'd love to enjoy it as much as some people on here do. I don't see that happening, but given my history with this band, and what they've given me, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Is it inferior to Summer Teeth and YHF? Probably. Has the quality of Wilco albums gone down since Jay left? Probably. But very few bands ever get to make a ST or a YHF. So I've tried to stop being a dick about the album and just giving it a shot.

Granted you don't have to...it's your time, and you can spend it anyway you choose.
