oatmealblizzard
There's a neat little piece in tomorrow's Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times where Tweedy talks briefly about what he's been listening to lately and why. I couldn't find it on their website yet, but I'm sure it will be up soon. Just thought I'd pass this on as I stumbled across it while reading the paper this morning. Anyway, the bands he talks briefly about are: Dr. DogGrizzly BearBattlesA Hawk and a HacksawPanda Bear

mpolak21
Great stuff, I'm in total agreement with him about the greatness of the Bears Grizzly and Panda and Hack and a Hacksaw. Dr. Dog is pretty solid too, I don't think I've heard the Battles yet. --Mike

random painted highway
Wow; that's awesome that Tweedy likes Grizzly Bear. I don't know... "Yellow House" has something very special to it. Just as evocative as AGiB.
nalafej
Jeff would have been very happy at pitchfork last weekend...

mfwahl
i checked out all the bands he recommended. From the descriptions I figured I would like Battles the least but I'm really excited about them. I encourage anyone to check out clips on youtube because their live clips are ridiculous. It's like tortoise on speed. Well that doesn't do it justice. just check it out. 'Yellow House' is definitely one of those "give it about fifty listens" albums... the first few skimmings, it was the most awful stuff I ever heard. It's a very intricate, rewarding album, but then again, I don't condone esoteric, inaccessible albums that have to be listened fifty times either.
Mr. Kinsley
I knew just by the title of this thread that I wouldn't know any of the bands listed. Tweedy and esoteric/obscure music are like hand & glove.
Chendizzle
I knew just by the title of this thread that I wouldn't know any of the bands listed. Tweedy and esoteric/obscure music are like hand & glove. Dude, check in the Someone Else's Song section more often, we'll hit you with the straight dope about aforementioned jams. Dr. Dog, Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, and Battles have been pimped pretty often by VC members. I was shocked how closely Jeff's list resembles a series of posts in the Now Playing sticky. Starry Eyed Squirrel
panda bear is amazing as is all animal collective stuff...'specially Sung Tongs. Grabbit!
Littlebear
I went to hear a bit all of these recommendations and I was *really* impressed with every one of them, with the exception of Panda Bear. Next time I look for new great music to hear, I'll ask Jeff Tweedy. You know, that doesn't happen that often, to agree with one's every recommendation. So I purchased all that (but replace Panda Bear with the first Dr Dog record - possibly the band that impressed me the most in the bunch, so I bought their two CDs) For the Hawk and a Hacksaw, I chose another one (the Way the Wind Blows) - from what I've read everywhere else, it's their best.
