watch me fall
I would've loved to have seen McFadden go up against Jasper Brinkley, but alas... Hope he thanks the Gamecocks in his Heisman acceptance speech.
bobbob1313
McFadden is easily the best player in college right now, but he probably won't win the Heisman because his team isn't very good. That is dumb.
watch me fall
Yeah, well we made his team look like the New England Patriots. But I agree, it is dumb. But he'll be making an assload of money in the NFL next year so I have a hard time feeling sorry for him.

(In McFadden related discussion, I'm not sure if I want the Dolphins to have the #1 pick in the draft, since if they do and they pass him up, I'll feel like it's a huge mistake, but I'm not sure he's their biggest need. It was a tough decision even before we found out Ronnie Brown has an ACL tear, andnow that we do know, it makes it even tougher. Either way, I think he's going to be one of the 5 best backs in the NFL before his 3rd year in the league is over. He's gonna really good)

But he'll be making an assload of money in the NFL next year so I have a hard time feeling sorry for him. It'll probably be in McFadden's favor to not win the Heisman. I mean, how's that Heisman thing been working out for most of the recent winners? Not too well, I'd say. Carson Palmer is probably the best NFL player of the last ten Heisman winners -- a legitimate starting quarterback, though it'd be a stretch to call him a superstar. Reggie Bush will probably have a good career, but how good is still an open question. But what about Troy Smith? Jason White? Eric Crouch? Chris Weinke, Ron Dayne, Ricky Williams, Danny Wuerffel? Matt Leinart's been a disappointment, at least so far. The last megastar Heisman winner was probably Barry Sanders, and that was 1988. Overall, the Heisman seems pretty useless as a measure of actual football talent. Kind of like the Grammys.
bobbob1313
Overall, the Heisman seems pretty useless as a measure of actual football talent. This is because instead of giving it to the best player, they generally give it to the quarterback of the best team in the country. McFadden is a legit player, he's no Jason White. quarter23cd
The last megastar Heisman winner was probably Barry SandersNo love for Eddie? He was no mega-star like Barry, but he was decently solid in the NFL for as long as his body held up.
MrRain422
Charles Woodson has had a pretty good pro career. Would probably have been a legit superstar if not for injuries, but he's done pretty well for himself anyway. You're right, 3,446 yards passing and 40 touchdowns against 6 interceptions is just worthless.I think his point was that White did not have the talent and skills necessary to make it in the NFL. He was a fine college player, sure, but sometimes that is as much a product of a player having the perfect set of skills for the system that he is playing in than it is talent. Gobias Industries
But is the Heisman supposed to mark the best college player or the "best NFL players-to-be"? I think that's the heart of the question, because college ball is no way close to playing NFL ball. Because whichever you pick will determine who's deserved (or not deserved) the Heisman trophies. MrRain422
It's supposed to be for the guy who had the best season in NCAA ball, so yeah, not meant to be, nor has it ever been, a reliable indicator for future success in the NFL.

He was playing with an extremely talented offense that spread the ball around. He was like, what 25 when he won it?
PigSooie
Darren McFadden is the best player in college football, folks. The fact that the Hogs are shitty makes it more evident.

CommerceComet
I watched a show on ESPNU that mentioned Sam Bradford as a contender. I hadn't heard that anywhere else. Can't really see a freshman winning it. Adrian Peterson was the closest we've had in a while right?

mpolak21
Damn, thats a real leap of faith there. . At this point as a Mountaineer fan I'd be happy with either. Neither White nor Slaton have particularly set the world on fire this season, mainly because of injuries and the fact that with our schedule they were essentially pulled after three quarters in half of the games, though I have seen Pat White back in the Heisman discussion. We need a lot of teams to lose LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri to even have a shot at the title. --Mike
CommerceComet
Damn, thats a real leap of faith there. OU won it all in 2000 and Jason White won the Heisman in 2003. I can tell you the title was a lot more fun.

Well until the Big 12 championship game that season OU looked invincible and I remember thinking when I was watching one of their blowout wins in November that this might be the greatest team I've ever seen. Obviously they didn't have a big time running back, they got that with Peterson the year after, but they blew almost everybody out. If it's any consolation WVU got waxed in the Gator Bowl to Maryland that year, lost to Cincinnati at home, and had Miami when they were number two on the ropes in Miami but Kellen Winslow caught a ball on his back on a fourth down play and Miami went on to kick a game winning field goal. Let's just forget 2003 ever happened... unless you're a Trojan or Tiger fan. --Mike
