Thanatos
I'm sure this is old news, but I just saw the message on Wilcoworld regarding British Petroleum's plans to "dump toxic sludge" into Lake Michigan. Cheers to Wilco for taking BP to task and raising environmental awareness amongst their fanbase! I, for one, plan on filling up my Jetta's tank elsewhere from this day henceforth! yermom
I signed the petition. I thought the little driving babies, "make the day a little better," animated tv spots they've got were cute when I first saw them on tv. They even have a cute little website encouraging folks to live more "green." I guess the adorable ads are part of their whole "greenwashing" attempt at making themselves look like good guys. What a bunch of jerks.

ANyway heres the link http://www.savedunes.org/petition/index.php3#namelist

Duck-Billed Catechist
Last week, the House of Representatives voted 387-26 to approve a resolution urging Indiana to reconsider the permit. A coalition of lawmakers also implored Johnson to put the permit on hold while BP considers additional upgrades.Looks like this effort has massive bipartisan support. Thanatos
I'm glad that Wilco is raising awareness on this issue, and I signed the petition...However, does anyone find it a tad hypocritical, given the fact that they 're now selling cars (Cars still run on petroleum, right?)?
AndrewR
they're not selling cars nor does selling their music to VW convey the idea that they endorse VW. Also, they are not speaking out against all oil companies, just BP.

giraffo
do people really look for such bullshit reasons to hate their favorite band (which, if I'm not mistaken, they like) that they draw ridiculous conclusions to the extent that having their music in a few car commercials equals supporting the company they thereby are trying to stop? dumping toxic sludge in rivers is bad. endorsing cars does not mean they endorse that. jesus, I can't tell if some people even like Wilco with the amount of inane cynical preachy bullshit they bring up. I'm not reacting to anyone in general but to the people that remain vehement on the asinine idea that Wilco has "sold out" because they refuse to even consider the hundresd of possibilities that contradict that idea. There was a time, not too long ago, when selling a song, never mind half your album, was considered a form of selling out. Back before the idea of selling out was considered trite, archaic and overly idealistic as it is today
Atticus
kind of like elitist music fans who will only buy albums off indie labels, huh?
Chris_H_2
Not to dump on Indiana (pun intended), but it deserves just as much blame as BP. After all, it signed off on the deal (justifying it by saying it would create 80 (80!) more jobs), just like it signed off on BP being able to dump mercury into Lake Michigan as it has been doing for years now. With this, and its prior refusal to grant reciprocity to IPASS users using Indiana toll roads, Indiana hasn't made too many friends in Illinois. That is all.

I don't look for bullshit reasons to hate Wilco and I still love their music. I just find it incongrous that they would take issue with BP dumping in Lake Michigan (which is definitely bad for the environment), while at the same time allowing their music to be used in an ad campaign to sell more cars (which are one of the worst sources of pollution on the planet...which is also bad). And YES, I do think they are selling cars and I DO think they are endorsing VW. To say that they are not, I believe, is simply an "asinine idea".

SlowBurn68
I actually only buy BP gas - They are the lesser of all evils. They do the most on a percentage basis (debatable) to invest back into new technology and fuels. I worked with BP-AMOCO for about a year consulting.
