Mr. Tony Margaritatime
I've had a few encounters: Happened into a Borders Books in Arlington,VA and met Terry Bradshaw there signing his book. I met Faye Dunaway, Neil Patrick Harris (pre-gay and pre-Doogie Howser) and Richard Widmark while filming a movie close to my home town. Almost ran over James "the Ragin' Cajun" Carville while he was jogging in Alexandria a few weeks ago. Met Fred Savage at a bar back in my college days in Athens, GA. Other regular, random sightings in Athens were Micheal Stipe (would occasionally shop in his food co-op), most of the guys from Widespread Panic, Hines Ward and the guy from the B-52s. foolnrain97
I once ran into Julia Childs in an art gallery in Maine. She said that she liked the Space Ghost Coast to Coast t-shirt that I was wearing. And saw Dave Chappell skateboarding around Easton mall.
Elixir Sue
Years ago, I ate lunch in a little restaurant in Boone, NC and Doc Watson walked in, played several songs, then said something along the lines of "Well, I'm going to head back up to the house now." Surreal. And now for something completely different, I bumped into Ginger Spice and Baby Spice at Abbey Road Studios in London.
Sir Stewart
The "autograph seeker with no pen" stories remind me of an essay by Paul Auster, about when as a kid and met Willie Mays after a game, but didn't have a pen to get his autograph. Since then he's always carried a pencil with him.

Sir Stewart
I think Gram Parsons made up that story, actually. And it was an ice cube, not a shovel, or a pen.

a.miller
I worked as Jewel's guitar tech last April and, consequently, met her. I also met Rich from the country outfit Big and Rich, though I wasn't aware he was someone famous at the time. He was loud and drank a lot of whiskey and Jewel was quite gorgeous. EDIT: fixed a typo. anodyne
jani lane from warrant asked me to jump his mom's beat up old minivan after the DLR/Sammy Hagar show. it was before he was on celebrity fit club and he was wearing a leather vest and no shirt. i don't know which looked worse - the beat up van or the beat up hair metal guy. i've only been starstruck a few times. the first time i met bill stevenson, i was pretty nervous. i was a little nervous when i met jeremy bulloch (boba fett). i've gotten to hang out with loads of my favorite music people and loads of horror movie celebrities, but no one too terribly impressive (especially when someone already trumped all stories by stretching next to maude lebowski). Reni
Does having Toxic Reasons play in my friends living room in Dayton when we were in college count?(I didn't think so.) have we had a conversation about Dayton? What years were your college years? We may know some of the same people. Dayton was small.

stooka
as a child, my dad once took my brother backstage at the Grand Old Opry. I met Roy Acuff and Little Jimmy Dickens. Same here, but it was Roy Acuff and Boxcar Willie. Saw Todd Rundgren playing video games at a Tilt in Dallas. (none of my friends knew who he was) Met a pre-famous Alabama at their audition for RCA. (We left 2 songs in!!!) Got a photographer assignment at HS newspaper to take a picture of a teacher's daughter. Entered the classroom and it was Morgan Fairchild. Met Brooks and Dunn and up walks Ray Benson from Asleep at the Wheel. Ronnie Dunn, my wife and I looked at Classic Cars in the lobby of the venue together. Sat next to Omar Sharif on the plane from Atlanta to Dallas. Saw Jimmy Connors at a resaurant in San Diego.
heile
Met Dr. Phil & John Macenroe at a tennis game. Randomly met Frank Black at a market downtown. Talked to Peter Buck for a few minutes. Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal did a instore at the CD shop where I work and I had to go to the venue and pick him up and drive him around. He's really nice. My personal favorite: After a Ryan Adams show a couple of weeks ago, some friends and I walked over to where the buses where and waited for about 15 minutes. After everyone except the 3 people I was with had left, Ryan came out from backstage and told us how he was tired of the bar scene. He went on a walk with us to find somewhere to sit (which ended up being a stoop of a house that was empty and for sale) He sat and chatted with us for a good half hour. My friends were going to the show the next night, I guess after that show, something similar happened and they got into the show the night after that for free because Ryan put them on the list. He's really nice.
Reni
while it's not my famous people thing - one of my friend's sisters is a pediatric nurse and works at NYU Med Center - she was on shift when Diana Krall had her baby and called my friend and was freaking out...."Elvis Costello is here!" She also goes to off off Broadway shows and is pals with Parker Posey. She is also friends with half the puppeteers on Sesame Street and got to hang out on the set. She dated some famous stand up comedian, though I don't remember who now..... yes, I must live vicariously through others.
anodyne
i have a huge crush on parker posey. she shot a movie in the school where i work my first year teaching there. unfortunately, i never got a chance to even gawk at her.

We were washing our hands and I thought 'Huh...it's her,' and then I left the bathroom. After drying my hands. Jandek, outside the Empty Bottle. Guest Speed Racer
How could I forget?!? I literally walked into the Prince of Norway. He was visiting our campus, and despite four Norwegian [insert official title here] with swords, and three of our own public safety escorting him, space-cadet student charged into him as he was entering/I was exiting the library. He was quite apologetic, and the [insert official title here] were all so flustered that they didn't seem to know what to do.
Mr. Kinsley
Literary world: James Baldwin, Jason Miller & Alice McDermott while at college Ohh! That reminds me! Ray Bradbury was the guest of honor at my school's Harvest Festival. It was kind of sad. He shouldn't be allowed to take care of himself anymore. He was wearing a dress shirt with a Halloween tie (which was still a month away) and tattered sweat shorts (!?!?!) with black socks and dress shoes. He sat in a chair on the stage and his junk was precariously close to falling out and giving all the younger kids a very early sex ed class.
Reni
I didn't mention people I met at events where I went to see them.....though I think the best of that list is meeting the Kids in the Hall.
