anthony
There's a fortune inside your headWhen all you touch turns to leadYou think you might just crawl back in bedWith the fortune inside your head ... There's bourbon on the breathOf the singer you love so muchHe takes all his words from the booksThat you don't read anyway ... His goal in life was to be an echoThe type of sound that floats around and then back downLike a featherBut in the deep chrome canyons of the loudest ManhattansNo one could hear himOr anything ... I am looking forwardToward the shadows tracing bonesOur faces stitched and sewingOur houses hemmed into homesTrying to be thankfulOur stories fit into phonesAnd our voices lift so easilyA gift given accidentallyWhen we

Guest David Puddy
Kiss N' Ride on the CTA... does anyone actually know what this means? when i first heard the song, i just assumed it meant a couple kissing on the CTA, but ever since i've lived in Chicago, i've seen the actual Kiss N Ride signs, but don't know what it means. is it like a little drop off spot near an L station where one would kiss their loved ones and then ride the train? i see it everyday on my way to work at the cumberland stop and always wonder... EDIT: i just googled it and found out that i'm right. just a drop off area. i always forget to google shit before asking others. nevermind.
quarter23cd
"When I get home, turn off the alarmI check the phone, no messages onI play the ones from yesterdayI play your song just to hear you say that yooouuuuuuuuYou're the lonely one."This still gets me after all these years. When I first heard it, as a teenager who was a little too obsessed with his record collection, this was a minor revelation to hear somebody else expressing this. "Cheer up, honey I hope you canThere is something wrong with me"This was the first thing that grabbed me about the YHF record. Jeff's best lines, in my opinion, are when he drops the poetic free-associative stuff and just cuts straight to the heart of it. "1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9"In my experience, this is the correct order. Artifex
Not sure if this was mentioned: "He resurfaced on the sidewalk of my block the other dayyeah it's a fat check sorry charlie, honey, he's back from LA " I've really been digging the rhythm of this song lately. Sarahd84
One of my favorite songs that wilco performs is Remember the Mountain Bed. I know it's a Woody Guthrie song, but Jeff singing it is just amazing. my favorite lines are: "Rosin smells and turpentine smells from eucalyptus and pineBitter tastes of twigs we chewed where tangled woodvines twineTrees held us in on all four sides so thick we could not seeI could not see any wrong in you, and you saw none in me." I still haven't seen this song live. it moves me when I'm sitting in my PJ's eating cereal, I can't imagine how I'll react when i see it at a show!
sgtpepper64
And my very favourite lines:"Open your arms as far as they will goTake off your dressAn embarrassing poem Was written when I was aloneIn love with you" that is also my favorite. That and... "On and On and On we'll be together yeah.On and on and on, on and on and on we're going to try."
idigworms
"He resurfaced on the sidewalk of my block the other dayyeah it's a fat check sorry charlie, honey, he's back from LA " I always heard this as "it's a fact, check it, sorry, Charlie". I can't escape this one: "Let's turn our prayersInto outrageous daresAnd mark our pageIn a future age".
Guest David Puddy
I could not see any wrong in you, and you saw none in me." specifically that line. my favorite from that song, and i just love singing and playing that song on my guitar.

cryptique
I like a lot of Jeff's lyrics, but I can't say he's ever been able to "wow" me. Very few lyricists can.
