There's a fortune inside your head

When all you touch turns to lead

You think you might just crawl back in bed

With the fortune inside your head

...

There's bourbon on the breath

Of the singer you love so much

He takes all his words from the books

That you don't read anyway

...

His goal in life was to be an echo

The type of sound that floats around and then back down

Like a feather

But in the deep chrome canyons of the loudest Manhattans

No one could hear him

Or anything

...

I am looking forward

Toward the shadows tracing bones

Our faces stitched and sewing

Our houses hemmed into homes

Trying to be thankful

Our stories fit into phones

And our voices lift so easily

A gift given accidentally

When we

All my lies are always wishes

I know I would die if I could come back new

Tall buildings shake

Voices escape singing sad sad songs

Tuned to chords strung down your cheeks

Bitter melodies turning your orbit around

Every little thing that you do

Seems so much better than I could do

I'm counting on

A heart I know by heart

To walk me through this war

Where memories distort

Kiss N' Ride on the CTA...

does anyone actually know what this means? when i first heard the song, i just assumed it meant a couple kissing on the CTA, but ever since i've lived in Chicago, i've seen the actual Kiss N Ride signs, but don't know what it means. is it like a little drop off spot near an L station where one would kiss their loved ones and then ride the train? i see it everyday on my way to work at the cumberland stop and always wonder...

EDIT: i just googled it and found out that i'm right. just a drop off area. i always forget to google shit before asking others. nevermind.

"When I get home, turn off the alarm

I check the phone, no messages on

I play the ones from yesterday

I play your song just to hear you say that yooouuuuuuuu

You're the lonely one."

This still gets me after all these years. When I first heard it, as a teenager who was a little too obsessed with his record collection, this was a minor revelation to hear somebody else expressing this.

"Cheer up, honey I hope you can

There is something wrong with me"

This was the first thing that grabbed me about the YHF record. Jeff's best lines, in my opinion, are when he drops the poetic free-associative stuff and just cuts straight to the heart of it.

"1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9"

In my experience, this is the correct order.

i agree, although i do love much of his "poetic free-associative stuff". his honesty is amazing though, probably what i like best about his writing.

One of my favorite songs that wilco performs is Remember the Mountain Bed. I know it's a Woody Guthrie song, but Jeff singing it is just amazing. my favorite lines are:

"Rosin smells and turpentine smells from eucalyptus and pine

Bitter tastes of twigs we chewed where tangled woodvines twine

Trees held us in on all four sides so thick we could not see

I could not see any wrong in you, and you saw none in me."

I still haven't seen this song live. it moves me when I'm sitting in my PJ's eating cereal, I can't imagine how I'll react when i see it at a show!

And my very favourite lines:

"Open your arms as far as they will go

Take off your dress

An embarrassing poem

Was written when I was alone

In love with you"

that is also my favorite.

That and...

"On and On and On we'll be together yeah.

On and on and on, on and on and on we're going to try."

"He resurfaced on the sidewalk of my block the other day

yeah it's a fat check sorry charlie, honey, he's back from LA "

I always heard this as "it's a fact, check it, sorry, Charlie".

I can't escape this one:

"Let's turn our prayers

Into outrageous dares

And mark our page

In a future age".

Not sure if I missed it, but I've always found these beautiful:

"There are rows and rows of houses, with the windows painted blue, with the light from the t.v., running parallel to you"
