cryptique
To me, the only thing that can explain the Qatar decision is massive corruption of the FIFA Executive Committee, half of whom probably won't even be alive in 2022, but they're all likely to be buying new yachts soon. Qatar has a population of 1.7 million and is smaller in land area that Connecticut. Oh, and it's over 100 degrees there much of the time. How is this a good idea? (Yes, I'm bitter that the U.S. lost ... but at least if Australia had been awarded the '22 Cup I would have been able to understand.)
Marijn
Dusting off this ancient thread for some exciting news from Germany: https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11891/13113740/xabi-alonso-leads-bayer-leverkusen-to-first-bundesliga-title Congratulations mr. uncool2pillow
I'll allow it since Dortmund is still alive in the Champions League.
heychicken
New to the thread - just dropping my teams here to see if I'm an island. USL Championship: Hartford Athletic SPFL: Celtic FC Premier League: I have no allegiance but can be swayed.
calvino
I have Englishman friend who has been trying to get me into football for the last 13 years -- I finally picked at Premier League team, before the beginning of last year and settled on Arsenal ---- I picked them mostly because it is Mick Jagger's favorite team. It is has been a blast following the league. I love the structure of the league. Bottom three get regulated and such -- wish USA sports had the same system - it will help to ensure teams making sure they put a decent enough team together to compete. My buddy is Manchester United fan -- it has been a blast watching Arsenal-United matches. In my village, we have about another four English transplants -- (Liverpool/Villa/City/United/Arsenal/Newcastle) are all represented. Makes for a fun day at the pub when one of the teams is playing. Very much agree on the relegation point. It would be really exciting to see things shake up. Not that the USL has it, but it is why I am not following MLS more closely as they appear to be more interested in maintaining NFL-style dominance. There's a fair few Arsenal supporters where I live in the Northeast - not to mention a whole vegetarian pub named after the team!

uncool2pillow
I became an Everton fan because of Tim Howard's presence on their side after the 2014 World Cup. I often rue that decision, but not last Wednesday. #UTFT

And as a Gunner fan I was really, really happy to see a Liverpool defeat. My friend turned me on to the Men in Blazers show earlier this year --- Roger Bennett must have been ecstatic for the Everton win
uncool2pillow
Quote MiB became one of my favorite pods during the pandemic. Roger Bennett is a truly special person. So enthusiastic, positive, empathetic, funny, smart, and hard-working. Check out his memoir (Re)Born in the USA. He spent a summer in his teens in Chicago. Changed his life.
calvino
Yeah - the Bears, White Sox, and Tracy Chapman. Bennett's interviews with James Oliver and Matthew McConaughey are always great. Definitely will seek out the book -- my library has it.

heychicken
Would greatly appreciate it if no one tries to buy O'Riley from us after this season.
calvino
There is still hope for the Gunners ----- traveling for a wedding on Saturday, so I will be watching it via the phone in the car. Go Gunners! Also, I am glad fans don't do the flare thing in the states --- those things seem annoying. They kind of remind me of hearing firecrackers at concerts go off during the 70's, that I hear on bootlegs.
calvino
A great season for the Gunners ---- 2 points shy of the Championship. A much better finish this year, than last year. We'll see if City gets any point deductions. I would be perfectly fine with waiting a month, to celebrate a Championship for the Gunners.

calvino
The Euro's have been a hoot - for the most part. Gonna be sad when it ends. Rooting for England.
uncool2pillow
I'm already mourning the end of 2 tournaments Sunday. As a teacher, it's been a glorious football-filled summer. The Olympics will help, then BOOM! right back into the Premier League season. Everton seems to be showing some hopes of stabilizing their future with a solid new owner. Hope springs eternal, but it's the hope that kills.
calvino
I tried getting into the Copa cup - but after watching the Euro's during the day - it always seemed like a let down watching the Copa.
