X Degrees of seperation from Wilco

Recommended Posts

I didn't know where to put this thread, hope this works.

I'm really interested to hear what the Wilco community has to say about this.

Ok, so here's the deal. I want to start off with Wilco. Consider everyone's side projects within the band, up and down Wilco's history with all of their members included.

So, one could venture taking Jeff Tweedy and heading towards Uncle Tupelo...

Now, out of Uncle Tupelo, go one more degree of seperation...Jay Ferrar and Son Volt.

You guys get the idea. Bracketing off music in this way, which one of these albums do you guys like the most? Wilco shouldn't count.

For me, as of right now I think Anodyne is my personal favorite right now. I'm so glad I started listening to Tupelo, I can't imagine seeing one of their shows when they were still around. Here's hoping for divine intervention for a reunion of some sorts.

I thought x degrees of separation was when you connected two vastly different bands by common links.

For instance wilco to nirvana.

Tweedy was in Uncle Tupelo, who had a record produced by Peter Buck, who was in a band with Michael Stipe, who is friends with Courtney Love who was married to Cobain.

Those are a blast, we should have a contest.

Jeff Tweedy to Lou Reed

Jeff is/was a member of Golden Smog with Gary Louris of the Jayhawks.

Mark Olsen of the Jayhawks is married to Victoria Williams.

Lou Reed recorded Victoria Williams' song "Tarbelly & Featherfoot" for the Sweet Relief CD which raised money for Victoria's medical treatments.

Jeff Tweedy to Me

Jeff Tweedy is Wilco. Nels Cline is in Wilco. Nels Cline plays in a band called Banyan. So have John Frusciante and Flea of RHCP. Anthony Kiedis is in RHCP. Anthony Kiedis dated Jacqueline Novak, a supermodel.

Jacqueline Novak's younger brother is John Barna, my friend.

i got a simple one for wilco & nirvana

the uncle tupelo song, That Year, has the same intro riff chords as Smells like teen spirit - and it came out earlier. is there something kurt never told us?

Smells Like Teen Spirit was written in late 1990, and debuted live before Still Feel Gone came out. The intro chords were meant to parody "More Than a Feeling". So nope. Sorry, doesn't work.

Another Wilco to Nirvana one.

Jim O'Rourke produced Wilco.

Jim O'Rourke mixed Joanna Newsom's Ys

Steve Albini recoreded Joanna Newsom's Ys

Steve Albini recored Nirvana's In Utero.

Uncle Tupelo was recorded by Peter Buck.

Who inherited Kurt Cobain's signature Jag-Stang guitar after he died.

Uncle Tupelo was recorded by Peter Buck.

Who's a member of R.E.M. with Michael Stipe.

Who was planning a collaborative album with Kurt Cobain right before he died.

what can I say, great artists move in the same circles.

If anyone can connect Radiohead to Wilco, you get a cookie.

And if you can string up Wilco, R.E.M., Nirvana, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and The Pixies in one line of like 15 degrees, I'll marry you.

...except that "That Year" was on No Depression, not Still Feel Gone, which came out in early 1990, so it could work after all.

Zing

Jeff Tweedy is in Wilco with Nels Cline. Nels Cline played wanky guitar in something with Mike Watt. Mike Watt dated (maybe was married? I dunno) Kira, who played in Black Flag with Henry Rollins. Henry Rollins growled on a live Misfits record with Glenn Danzig, who was in Samhain with Steve Zing.

Next.

Yeah, I'm not buying it either, but you never know.

*nods*

Anyway

Jeff Tweedy is in Wilco

who was produced by Jim O'Rourke

who was a member of Sonic Youth

who toured with Nirvana

who's lead singer was working on a project with Michael Stipe

who's the lead singer of R.E.M. who toured with Radiohead

who played at Coachella 2004 with The Pixies.

Yeah...I guess I answered my own question...do I have to marry myself now?

Doesn't do the 'so-and-so dated what's-his-face' thing, but still interesting.

The Beatles had a singer by the name of John Lennon

John Lennon cowrote the song "Fame" with David Bowie

David Bowie curated the Highline Festival in 2007

An act of his chosing was Deerhoof

Deerhoof opened for Wilco in 2005

not a strong connection, but Beatles to Wilco in five steps.

Ok here goes...

OK here goes...REM invented the internet college radio. As a result Sonic youth could make their record in NYC. The Pixies from Mass had to form to counter the NY sound. (Kind of a Red Sox/Yankee thing). Nirvana was accused of ripping off the pixies. Here in this thread Nirvana was accused of borrowing from UT, UT begat Wilco, and Wilco has at times been accused of trying to be a US version of Radiohead who opened for REM on tour once so we come full circle. Thanks for the Marriage proposal, but I

Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)-> Jim O'Rourke -> Thurtson Moore-> Dave Grohl-> Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) -> Slim Moon (founder of Kill Rock Stars. Kurt Cobain's neighbor/ close friend in the late 80s) -> Elliott Smith (former Kill-Rockstars label artist.)

Here's a stupid connection between Wilco and Radiohead that I worked out with far too many steps in between:

Wilco worked with Jim O'Rourke

O'Rourke was a member of Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore was part of the Backbeat band with Dave Grohl

Grohl played with Soundgarden's Kim Thayil in something called the No WTO Band

Soundgarden's Chris Cornell was a member of Temple of the Dog with Eddie Vedder

Vedder appeared on Neil Finn's 7 Worlds Collide album/DVD with members of Radiohead

Wow, where did the last hour go?
