PopTodd
And how? Judas Priest - Point Of EntryInspired me to start playing the guitar. Meat Puppets - Up On the SunShowed me that there was great music out there beyond what was being played on the radio. The Replacements - Pleased To Meet Me"Well, maybe I won't be a great guitar player; but maybe I can write songs?" Uncle Tupelo - No Depression"I definitely want to write songs! And, you know what? Country music can actually be pretty cool!" Brian Eno - Another Green WorldShowed me that there is more to the musical world than just guitar-based music. yermom
The Smiths- Meat is Murder & The Cure- Standing on a BeachHelped me through my very awkward teenage years. Wilco- A Ghost is BornWas like some loyal friend I could visit every night, a shoulder to cry on, while grieving after my brother's death last year. Al Green- I'm Still in Love With YouA glue that keeps my relationship together. It's hard to argue with my lovey if "Love and Happiness" is in my head, I just want to dance him 'round the room. So if my other half gets on my nerves I set the little record player in my head to Al Green mode and all is well. Sonic Youth- Screaming Fields of Sonic Love & The Pixies- Doolittle Showed the young me that chicks could be kick ass rock babes without having to be sleazy or nuts. El Picador
The Smiths - Louder than BombsThis records and all the other Smiths records helped me to realized that not all british new wave was lame. Grateful Dead - American BeautyThis record made me a Deadhead. John Hartford - Steam Powered AereoplaneWow. This record is my favorite bluegrass record of all time. Makes me want to smoke a joint and play music with my friends. Radiohead - OK ComputerHelped me get through my divorce way back when. Wilco - Yankee Hotel FoxtrotI already listened to Wilco but this record was different for me. It came out about the time my son was born and it helped me transition to fatherhood. My son has his own copy of this CD.

GtrPlyr
Kiss - Alive II - This was one of the first records I ever bought with my own money, and it started me wanting to be a guitarist, though at the time all I could get my hands on was an air guitar. Around this time I also started listening to Led Zeppelin and The Who. Those early records bonded early friendships. The Replacements - Let It Be - Showed me that a band really could do whatever they felt like on a record. You could careen all over the place from punk-rockers to heart-on-sleeve ballads, it didn't matter as long as you meant it. "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me" solidified things for me. These guys were a band for us people that felt a little out of place or step with the mainstream. Depending on the day you ask me, these guys would probably top my favorite band list. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On - For its beauty and timeless sentiments. Prince - Sign 'o' the Times/Purple Rain - As a young musician growing up in the 80's could there be a musician more inspiring than Prince? The guy played something like 24 instruments and wrote songs like nobody else. Definitely inspired me to start writing songs. Bob Dylan - Too Many to Mention - Showed me that songwriting could be poetic, abstract, angry, tell a story... could do anything you want it to. Probably the most influential songwriter for me Big Star - #1 Record/Radio City/Third - All of them still inspire me to this day. 3 near perfect records that encapsulate everything that's good in modern music. Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool - The first record that turned me onto Jazz. The Beatles - Everything - Showed me that 4 (5 with Martin) is better than 1. How could you not be inspired by their work? Bob Marley - Too many to mention - Bob's music has always had the power to pull me out of a funk. There's too many left to mention. I haven't even touched upon Wilco, The Band, Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, Sly & the Family Stone, Who, Kinks, Stones, Radiohead, Lucinda Williams, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix... dixiecupdrinker
In no particular order: Neil Young - Tonight's the Night - booze, drugs, heartache. It fit my life then. Neil Young- Live Rust Beatles- everything they ever did, but particularly Sgt. Pepper the 1st time I heard it in the 7th grade at Dave McConell's house on his dad's turntable. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - no discussion necessary, but it came at just the right time. Beasties- Paul's Boutique. We were in on something that just about nobody else was in on; made it that much better. I'm sure there are more, but can't think of them off hand. dcd

dixiecupdrinker
We may actually know each other. You know, we just might... if you can add "Check Your Head" to that list like I think I have to, I can at least confirm that we are kindred spirits. Oh, speaking of adding to the list... the first two Zep albums did a lot for me, too. dcd
the carlos
Hair (1968 Original Broadway Cast)-My parents record collection. I have no idea why they had this. I was the only one that listened to it. My first real music experience. The 5th Dimension-The Age of Aquarius-Same as above. Blondie-Parallel Lines-First record I asked my parents to buy me. The B-52's-The B-52's-First record I bought on my own. I saw them on SNL and rode my bike to the record store the next day. Depeche Mode-Some Great Reward-Important one as it led me to New Order. Devo-Q:Are We Not Men? A:We Are Devo!-Duh. RUN-DMC-Raising Hell-Weird. I don't really dig this one anymore but it brought me to hip hop in general and I couldn't be more grateful. REM-Document-Changed my life completely and found my favorite band. Public Enemy-It Takes A Nation of Millions-This one hit me just before a trip to Washington D.C. with school. I found it at just the right time. EDIT-Violent Femmes-Violent Femmes-Lindsey and I were having coffee just now and I realized I had forgotten this one. NOT MUCH HAPPENED FOR ME IN THE 90s. except the two below Olivia Tremor Control-Black Foliage: Animation Music-Woo. Poppy and strange and fun and it takes you somewhere. Neutral Milk Hotel-In the Aeroplane Over the Sea-This is the last record that really did something for me on a bigger level. Still does.
benjamin
Eels - Beautiful FreakThe ultimate album of depression for me. It's part of the healing process of any heartache. Radiohead - The BendsIt doesn't get much better than this to me. This album takes me to a really dark place that I sometimes enjoy wallowing in. I could listen to Street Spirit on repeat all day. Weezer - (The Blue Album)I will always praise this album. It pulled me from the darkness that is bad high school music. Wilco - YHFOpened the palate wide open for musical exploration The Beatles - Abbey RoadMy parents only really listened to 'older' beatles. Discovering this put me on the path to other albums my parents 'don't get'

deepseacatfish
The Beatles-White AlbumDefinitely the first record I remember playing over and over. It's an album that's just grown with me as I've gotten older and have understood more about it. There's always something new to find in it and the huge range of the album is its beauty. John Coltrane-A Love SupremeAn album that I think everybody should own. I had heard jazz live before and appreciated it, but this was my first jazz album. It's an absolutely amazing piece of music and probably the most transcendent example of jazz that I've ever heard. Wilco-Yankee Hotel FoxtrotNot only did this album introduce me to Wilco, but it was an album that truly sounded contemporary and completely relevant to me. The sonic palette and depth of this record is just amazing. Steve Reich-Music for 18 MusiciansThis piece exploded the boundaries of classical music for me.
Doug
The Jam- Snap! The Wedding Present- Bizarro (It's not my favorite WP album these days, but it's the first one I heard; these guys immediately became my favorite band until I stumbled upon the next album on my list.) Guided by Voices- Bee Thousand Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted Wilco- YHF Pearl Jam- No Code Beatles- Abbey Road Dylan- Bringing It All Back Home (Again, it's not my favorite these days, but it's the first Dylan album I heard.) MattZ
I would also like to point out that, for the record, it is impossible to have more than one favorite.
ction
Yep. A real fine line between life-changing/favorite. It's all semantics anyway I guess, but I wouldn't even consider any of the albums I listed among my favorites of all time. Certainly not in the top 10 anyway. I can't even remember the last time I've listened to most of them. If that is at all directed at me I will e-fight you. I just gave you an e-Purple Nurple.
