solace
one interesting thing about the timing of this... Mac OSX Leopard is being released on Friday and would have been one of the biggest/most seeded torrents in that site's history i'd imagine

lizish
BBC reporting it http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tees/7057812.stm 'The IT worker was led from his home in the town's Grange Road and is being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and infringement of copyright law. At the same time his employer - a large multi-national company - and his father's home were also raided. ' also mentioned something about Oink being extremely lucrative. Wonder how. I'm not a user, but surely Google ads don't pay that much.

Duck-Billed Catechist
How about tracking users? That's what I am wondering about.Leaked memos suggest that the RIAA has been tracking Oink users for a while. They paid to upload and download music, some of it not yet released by record companies.Um, not really. It was run on donations, right? No one had to donate.I would think that's a far riskier proposition than Oink ever was. Why? Your IP address is available for anyone to see on bittorrent sites.
imsjry
i'd say that as long as you never were an initial uploader of a torrent you have little to worry about... Why would you say that? I thought they usually like to go after the downloaders. Makes better press.

Marijn
Makes you wonder why they kept the servers in Amsterdam instead of Russia or a small kingdom in the Pacific Ocean.
tongue-tied
Makes you wonder why they kept the servers in Amsterdam instead of Russia or a small kingdom in the Pacific Ocean. Or in the Pacific Ocean, thousands of leagues below the rule of copyright. I had a feeling OiNK was too good to last. I've been tempted to join a few times, but I suspected the eye of Sauron was fixed on the pink palace. Plus I still don't know much about torrents. Still, sounded like pirate heaven, I hope no one here gets in trouble.

cryptique
As for potential nastiness resulting from this, I'm sort of hoping for the "safety in numbers" effect. There were SO many Oink users, and I was a bit player among that throng. If they go after people based on level of use, they'd take quite a long time to get around to me, if they ever did. Probably fooling myself, but that's the direction my thoughts are going...

Synthesizer Patel
Looks like i'm going to have to go back to buying a couple of albums a year from artists I already know about then. The record industry can rest easy knowing that!

Slam dunk. It's nothing in terms of sending out nastygrams, but for filing actual lawsuits, it's a huge number, and it wouldn't play very well in the press.
