In no particular order:

Arctic Monkeys "Favourite Worst Nightmare"

Eddie Vedder "Into the Wild Soundtrack"

Blue Scholars "Bayani" (Seattle Hip-Hop Duo)

Coco B's "Coco B's" (self-released S. Cali band - fantastic)

Amy Winehouse "Back To Black"

Honourable mentions, Wilco, Apples in Stereo, Common, Jamie T and LCD Soundsystem

Disappointments of the year: Arcade Fire (still an amazing live show but an album I found boring) and Spoon

hmm.... Neon Bible certainly isn't as great s Funeral, but boring? :unsure

and Spoon's newest is def better than the last one, but i still kinda feel they're treading water a bit compared to their run from '98 through '02

Sad no one mentioned the Magnolia Electric Co!

Magnolia Electric Co - Nashville Moon

Iron & Wine - The Shepard's Dog

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Radiohead - In Rainbows

Thurston Moore - Trees Outside The Academy

Wilco should be in there too!! Five isn't enough, we should do a 10-20 closer to Christmas. This is kind of jumping the gun a bit.

1. Friend Opportunity - Deerhoof

2. Ten Readings of a Warning - All Smiles

3. Strawberry Jam - Animal Collective

4. Sky Blue Sky - Wilco

5. some sort of ten-way tie

As I tend to give only one or two new albums all my attention during a year, I'm only sure about 1-2. Strawberry Jam is notable because I had a complete change of opinion about it. Sky Blue Sky is notable because it's Wilco. I plan on giving more time to Autumn of the Seraphs, Kala, Person Pitch, Icky Thump, Hissing Fauna, Widow City, In Rainbows, Hey Venus!, Mentor Tormentor, and to check out a few that keep on showing up in the lists here.

they were supposed to open for Aqueduct this wednesday, so I got a ticket a while back, now they're no longer listed... :( I like Aqueduct live, but I was looking forward to seeing Georgie James too...

yeah, they had to cancel the first week or so of this tour due to one of them being sick :(

i think the tour starts on Thursday in Iowa if i recall

OK, this could change by the end of the year, but here are my top 5, not in numerical order 'cause I haven't figured that out yet:

Andrew Bird

Bon Iver

The National

New Pornographers

Okkervil River

Also will be high on the list: Jamie T, LCD Soundsystem, Babyshambles, Spoon...

oops, I forgot Kevin Drew... yeah, that one's pretty good too.

Just picked this up after not hearing about it and then reading this thread. It is VERY cool.

Hooray! I'm really astonished and severely disappointed that it isn't showing up on more lists here. There was a big discussion back when it leaked, IIRC, and I seriously can't be the only person who's been listening to it every few days for a whole entire year. Can I? :o

On a similar note, I went to Bon Iver's site after seeing his completely unfamiliar name on more lists than the OM disc. Never heard of him before, but he's pretty good. Sounds a bit like TV on the Radio if they went unplugged, or something. Allmusic's got nothing; anybody know Bon's back story?

I thought I had heard more new music this year than I apparently have (I'm going to have to figure out how to get past the Canadian block on demonoid). For now, probably, in reverse alpha order:

Wilco

Weakerthans

Bon Iver

Bruce Springsteen

Andrew Bird

1) Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala

2) Various Artists - Four Songs by Arthur Russell

3) Justice - Cross

4) David Vandervelde - Moonstation House Band

5) White Williams - Smoke

Also, I liked Sound of Silver and parts of Person Pitch. I wish I liked Sky Blue Sky more. There are some good songs there, but it just never managed to hold my interest.

Holy crap do I feel out of the loop...I've never even heard of The National. Guess they're good huh?

Mine:

1. Wilco-Sky Blue Sky

2. Rickie Lee Jones-Exploration Blvd.

3. Lucinda Williams-West (I will never understand the lack of love for this)

4. That new Sigur Ros disc

5. Kevin Drew-What if

Props to Levon Helm, Son Volt, White Stripes, Thurston Moore, Paul McCartney

Actually' date=' that's the one I feel guilty about. Had no idea he had released something this year until these type of lists started mentioning it.

Obviously you like it. Tell me why....[/quote']

Ooh, can I, can I? :P

It's a great little record. I think people are steering clear of it in droves because either the lack of publicity is really hurting the disc (it's on Vanguard), or they're afraid of what Levon might sound like.

He sounds just incredible.

The cancer took its toll on his voice, but he's regained so much power and strength that it's really just miraculous. He basically sounds like you'd expect any powerful performer to sound when they start the creep towards 70 years of age. A little husky, a little short of breath at times, but exactly like Levon Helm. Honestly, if nothing else, Dirt Farmer probably features my favourite vocal performance of the year.

If you're a Band fan, you'll probably love hearing the songs on the disc, too. Lots of old classics, like Little Birds and Blind Child, and there are plenty of new ones in the mix that are perfectly suited to Lee's voice, like Steve Earle's The Mountain and Buddy and Julie Miller's Wider River to Cross.

This is definitely another one of those records that I'm depressed to see so few people on music boards touting. :no

Allow me to be the first to very proudly give top honours (or even an honourable mention - say it ain't so!) to:

1. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?

Honorable Mention: White Stripes, Wilco, Broken West, Gogol Bordello, Of Montreal, Radiohead, Spoon, Chuck Prophet, White Rabbits.

I'm with ya... if I gave this list more thought, I wouldn't be surprised to see Of Montreal nudge its way into my top 5.
