One that many of you may not have been aware was a cover song:

"Respect" - Aretha Franklin (Otis Redding)

Effigy - Uncle Tupelo. It was the first time I ever heard UT. It was on the No Alternative soundtrack.

Sexual Healing - Soul Asylum. Off the same No Alternative album.

Mammy Blue - Roger Whitaker - Thanks to A-Man I recently rediscovered this song.

Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Nirvana. It is just classic.

AFI - Just Like Heaven. Not a big AFI fan but they did it on the Cures MTV Icon tribute and it was really good.

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi. After Jimi did it, Dylan started playing it Hendrix's way. Enough said.

Mr Tambourine Man - Byrds. I just recently found out that this was a Dylan tune. You learn something new every day.

The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down - Black Crowes. Marc Ford does a guitar solo that mimics the vocal melody that is great.

I Shot The Sherrif - Clapton

The entire Nineteen Eighties album - Grant Lee Phillips. Great album, 3 of the standouts are "Under The Milky Way", "Boys Don't Cry", and "So. Central Rain". I highly recommend this album.

:lol I was thinking of mentioning this one too.

Last time we did this thread, I mentioned this one, but it's still a favorite:

I thought that was fairly common knowledge. I'm sure it is around these parts ;).

Some great ones mentioned already. I'll add:

Nico "These Days" (Jackson Browne)

Wilco "True Love Will Find You in the End" (Daniel Johnston)

Emmylou Harris "Just about everything on Wrecking Ball for starters"

I never knew that Wilco covered Daniel Johnston. I recently started getting into some of his stuff after watching "The Devil and Daniel Johnston". Great documentary if anybody ever gets a chance to watch it.

The Daniel Johnston doc is one of the better music docs of late. I would definitely recommend it too.

You can download Wilco's version of his song from here http://www.owlandbear.com/2007/04/24/hoste...les-1994-2002//

I liked exactly zero Beatles covers until I heard The Black Keys doing "She Said, She Said." I suppose it's the exception that proves the rule (the rule being don't cover the Beatles).

How about Aimee Mann & Michael Penn covering "Two of Us"?

I'm saying nope. Just doesn't happen. I didn't really like that Fats Domino tune from earlier, either. There's just something about the Beatles recordings: they captured the songs perfectly. Not a fan of Aimee Mann's voice anyway.
