ZenLunatic
Is it too early to start asking kind hearted Chicagoans on VC for possible places to stay? The tickets are one thing, but the prospect of spending several hundred dollars on a hotel is daunting. PM me and we can chat. Thanks in advance, Greg I am actually only planning on going saturday but welcome people that need a place to sleep fri or sat night. Also I live in burbs but will be going down and can provide ride for saturday show thats assuming I get tickets for it before it sells out.

VenusStopsTrain2
Very true. Look, I live a mile and a half straight north of the Riv. Most of the sketchy stuff is 2 blocks east of the venue over on Sheridan; the area right around Broadway & Lawrence (where the Riv is) is fine. The el station is within sight of the venue, Broadway & Lawrence are both high-traffic streets with late night bus routes and plenty of cabs, the Aragon's around the corner, the Green Mill, Crew, and some other trendy new bar are all just north of the intersection -- it's not like you're going to emerge from the venue doors into a dark alley crawling with meth addicts and violent homeless people. There's a Starbucks right across the street from the Riv, geez! Let's not blow this Uptown thing out of proportion. You realise you just wrote you live there and now all of us want to come stay with you for the whole time right? lol Although if I end up purchasing tickets for the whole thing I would seriously welcome somewhere to stay. I'm from the Quad Cities and that's too far to drive back and forth to. Am quite willing to work a deal out with someone for staying over. And whoever said there were too many dates coming out at the same time is right. I'm hoping to get tickets for Des Moines tomorrow morning as well! I may just have to become a part of their touring company or something.
allgodsmoney
i'm going to make sure that i have no night classes so i can hit all five nights up. i am more excited for this than for anything in my entire life! i would be willing to drive for a carpool from milwaukee, which may include bunking together if we decide to be friends soon...bus or train info sharing would be appreciated as well. how sweet would it be to have a bus with a few of us giddy freaks on it? pm me if interested edit: megabus is a great deal...just a buck per seat at times, little more at others. FUN!union station is 8 miles away from the riv, though... I think a train car might be the ticket, ole girl, and a taxi at the end of the ride.
kimcatch22
You realise you just wrote you live there and now all of us want to come stay with you for the whole time right? lol Haha, I'm sure my roommate would LOVE that!! The couch is actually already taken by someone coming in for all 5 of the shows... maybe you should get yourself on Facebook and start friending students at Loyola University, then casually mention that you need a place to stay... oh, those dorm floors are so comfortable!! chitaper
Because he's the Governor... only in West Virginia, can you run into your Governor (who never acted alongside Danny Devito as his twin brother) at Circuit City.I once saw Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. buying a big-screen TV at Best Buy. He had his black SUV with Congressional plates at the entrance, and they were trying to load it in there but it wouldn't fit. So they had to remove it from the box. He didn't have any security with him. I'm very excited about these shows! Hopefully my g/f will be able to get me the 5-day pass from her work tomorrow, I don't have a computer at work.
Analogman
It's okay kidsmoke, last time I checked my state wasn't governed by the star of Junior . Interesting side note, last year when I was buying The Crane Wife at the Charleston Circuit City I bumped into our governor, Joe Manchin. He was there buying a radio and standing in the check out line. I said hello and shook his hand (because he is both Catholic and a Democrat, my grandmother has declared him the second-coming of JFK, he's probably not even Teddy-level yet, so I had to at least say something to him so I could tell this story). Anyway, he checked out in front of me and than I came up in the line and the check-out guy looked me and said "why are there two state troopers following that guy in the suit and his wife?" Because he's the Governor... only in West Virginia, can you run into your Governor (who never acted alongside Danny Devito as his twin brother) at Circuit City. Sorry to hijack the thread. Pretend the governor said something to me about the pre-sale password. --Mike I grew around him and his family.

Ike_Arumba
Sorry if this has been covered before... Is the Riv a seated venue or GA? Thanks.
alison the wilca
ga but there are ga seats in the balcony if, like me, you like to sit at shows. some of the seats are located directly over the a/c vents, which feels nice when it warms up in there.
OOO
From Wilco HQ: Chicago in mid-February. Those of us who've spent a few winters there can attest that it is not for the meek or easily intimidated. That said, there's nothing like walking out of a venue post show to a howling 30 mile an hour arctic wind off the Lake (a few short blocks from the Riv...), icy snow blowing in your face. In the old days, we usually opted for the Green Mill while the crowds thinned. Anyway, now that we've weeded out the less ambitious among you, we'll also explain what makes this a sort of "don't miss" week for Wilco fans. Over these 5 nights the band will endeavor to perform every song in their now extensive ouvre (or is that canon)? This includes all the studio recordings and their contributions to the Mermaid Avenue records. Plus, who knows what else? To further clarify, the plan is NOT to do the material sequentially or chronologically. Rather, they're just going to attempt to cover it all over the 5 shows. It'll be a real blast, we're certain. The bolding is mine
Analogman
Let's hear the dirt on Gov. Manchin. I can't do that, city slicker. From Wilco HQ: The bolding is mine Monk & I think they should play them in order - one each night.
JasonArtDude
I think it will make for better shows with them mixing the albums up. Has anybody figured out exactly how many recorded songs are in the "wilco canon?" By my approximation I figure somewhere around 100.....not including b-sides.
DAngerer09
This includes all the studio recordings when I hear that, it seems like they would count the B-Sides, but that would be a ton o songs...

yankee
Carols is a great place, used to take my wife dancing there years ago. Not sure if Sidewinder is still playing there, hopefully so. You could name about ANY country tune and they'd play it. No reason to be leery......the place has real people in there, not just yups and hipsters. One of the bartenders has the most amazing Kentucky mudflap...that, coupled with his polyester truckers hat....quite a sight. Did I hear Lake View Lounge closed?!? Damn, that hurts....hurts bad. I heard about the end of the Lake View Lounge from a friend who attended the closing night blast. Last time I went down that block, it looked like it was indeed gone. Very sad!!! That place was unique. Gotta love 3 old guys in shiny shirts who rock out all night and get the crowd to sing along on Viva Las Vegas. And the tiny stage was tucked behind the bar and came complete with year round Christmas lights and tinsel. Classic. And yeah, Carol's is fun, and has a similar (but less surreal) vibe. It's sure not fancy, but every now and then, I love me a good dive bar! And if there's a live band playing some honky tonk classics, all the better. Great option for late night if you're still wound up from a Wilco show at the Riv. And to recover from the inevitable hangover, Furama on Broadway just north of the Green Mill serves some mighty nice Dim Sum for brunch.
Beltmann
The term "all studio recordings" implies recordings beyond the albums, right? Should we expect them to include material like, say, "Just a Kid"?
Reni
Between the winter residency, new tour dates, and Jeff's solo benefit show, I'm completely overwhelmed. Too much at once. Can't decide what to do. Probably won't do a damn thing at this point. I am telling ya - you have room, board and a babysitter here in Chicago.....get yourself some tickets and come on up!! JRiordan
I wonder what the service fee and shipping fee will be on MusicToday. People may have an impression that they are a good alternative to Ticketmaster, but I have bought many shows on there before and the prices are not much different -- in some cases I think they were actually higher. yankee
The term "all studio recordings" implies recordings beyond the albums, right? Should we expect them to include material like, say, "Just a Kid"? To get that extensive, you've got to go see the Wilco ensemble, the Old Town School of Folk Music's Wilco cover band. We've performed Just a Kid, we've attempted Hey Chicken, and at a living room show last year, we jammed with Jeff on a few old dusty ones like Cars Can't Escape and Dash 7. Over the past few years we've attempted to perform Wilco's complete studio recordings, including bonus tracks and . . . . hmmmm . . . . . . interesting . . . . .
Nobody Girl
I am still in New York and I am still rationalizing.I'm on the East Coast, too, and I've even told my friends to convince me that it's insane for me to go to this. It's not working.
