Analogman
There is a snippet of what I am guessing is a new Son Volt or Jay album up on the Son Volt Facebook page today.
calvino
Finally gotten the reissue of Trace - the one with two discs. Nice show on the 2nd disc.
Analogman
Check out the clip on the FB page - it is rocking.
calvino
Sounds low-fi -- of course I am listening to it on a shitty computer speaker. You are right, though - rocking.
Knight Rider
I think I read somewhere the new record was recorded as a 3 piece. The snippet seems to have that raw quality to it.
Analogman
I am thinking some sort of Nuggets garage style or blues rock of some sort. I guess we will see or hear at some point.
Knight Rider
The new record will be called Notes of Blue. Certainly looks like it might have that bluesy garage sound. Nice to see Jay plugged in again.
calvino
The new one looks like it should be a good one or at least an interesting one. from Son Volt's Website: NEW ALBUM – NOTES OF BLUEWe are excited to announce the release of Son Volt’s new album, Notes of Blue (Thirty Tigers), on February 17, 2017 (simultaneous release in UK, EU, Australia & New Zealand). The 10 songs on Notes of Blue are inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues as most know it. The unique and haunting tunings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake were all points of exploration for Farrar for the new collection. The album opens with the country soul of “Promise The World”, followed by “Back Against The Wall”, a song that could stand alongside the great Son Volt songs of their early albums. However, Notes Of Blue reflects the blues as it resides in the folk tradition, but heavily amplified. The primal stomp of “Cherokee St”, the frenetic guitar on “Static” and the raw slide in “Sinking Down” exude grit and attitude. Conversely, tracks such as “The Storm” and “Cairo and Southern” seamlessly meld blues with hypnotic melodies that add a unique balance to Notes of Blue.
Analogman
I was going to post that yesterday. But the site was down. We'll see.

Knight Rider
Very encouraging... Back Against the Wall really takes me back to the first three SV records.
Beltmann
Those two tunes are the first things by Jay in years that I really dig. Super promising.
Boss_Tweedy
That's the first music of Jay's in quite a while that didn't make me want to kill myself.

Analogman
NPR has the whole album up to stream: Notes of Blue
Knight Rider
Promise the World and Back Against the Wall have that original lineup sound. Jay has often struggled with wordiness/awkward phrasing. I like how he simplified the lyrical approach to match the more authentically blues tunes. On first full listen, it has a number of keepers. Really liking Lost Souls, Sinking Down and Cherokee St. I'm a big Son Volt/Jay fan, so I'm naturally biased. I'll be interested to read what others think...
Analogman
I didn't realize there were acoustic type songs on the album until I heard it. I guess those came about from the other album he talked about working on.
