The park looks good. It's very much in the same vein as a lot of the other recently opened parks, but that's not a bad thing.

On a not-particularly-related subject, how many artificial-turf MLB parks remain? I can only think of three: Minnesota, Toronto, and Tampa Bay. How long before we're rid of those, too?

Funny ... I remember when the National League was the league with more artificial turf. Now it's 100% natural grass. :D

I'm pretty sure these are the only three left. MIN currently has a stadium under construction that will be an outdoor (with a canopy-not a roof, apparently) and natural grass.

Tampa Bay has plans on the board for a new ballpark as well... something's gotta give up in Toronto! Keep the roof open and grow some bermudagrass, eh? :)

Or move the team to the States.

so what's he worth after 5 years ? 15 mill a year ?

Well, he was sniffing for $900,000. I think it's a decent move to appease him for this season before it starts and then deal with an extension when it's time to. It's a high figure for his years in the league but he's affordable according to the pockets of the organization. He's also a pretty good pitcher.

MLB Wants Piece Of Cape League's Profits

Reporting

Bill Shields

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Major League Baseball is fighting a battle with the storied Cape league over naming rights.

Many of the Cape League teams share nicknames with their Major League counterparts.

For many people, Cape League baseball is one of the area's biggest attractions. Of the 10 teams, six have Major League names and uniforms like the Yarmouth Red Sox and the Bourne Braves.

But now the MLB says if the teams want to look like the pros, they'll have to sport their uniforms and merchandise from Major League Baseball. MLB also wants an 11 percent royalty on sales of existing inventory of the six teams.

"It doesn't make sense at all," said Bourne selectman Judy Conran. "It seems the Major Leagues have enough revenue without having to come after us. We don't even have enough money sometimes to put up our own players."

MLB contributes $100,000 a year to the Cape League but says it will retract the annual grant if the teams don't purchase all future uniforms and souvenir merchandise from costly MLB-licensed vendors.

"I guess they want a piece of everything," said one resident. "They want to put their hand on everything."

The Bourne Brave's brand new field was built by high schoolers. The league relies on a lot of volunteers.

The Cape League has been a virtual breeding ground for big league talent.

The Red Sox alone boast a number of former Cape players, including Jason Varitek, Mike Lowell and Kevin Youkilis.

Thanks for posting those ballpark pics. I did a halfhearted search yesterday and couldn't find much. I'd like to get up there this year, maybe combine it with some shows at the 9:30, but we'll see.

Let me know. I have some connections.

Very cool story about the Royal's Brian Bannister, who is one of the first pitchers to publicly embrace sabermetrics. It's sort of sad that a baseball player who uses statistics and reasonable, objective thinking has to be praised. This should be commonplace.

This seems so petty to me.

I love the Cape League ...

the league should just pick different names that aren't licensed, and just tell mlb to f*ck themselves. All these small leagues struggle to stay afloat in these tiny little towns--and they create opportunities for young ball players, it is just disgusting that mlb would be all over them.

Can some of you White Sox fans (or anyone else) give me some free advice about Alexei Ramirez? I am thinking of taking a chance on him in my auction keeper league -- the problem is that we cannot drop players before the all-star break (unless they are injured or sent to the minors) and our auction is this Saturday. So, if he makes the team as a backup he could be a painful hole in my lineup. I am reading about how he is tearing up Spring Training and is the darkhorse to win the 2b job... Any thoughts? I am hoping to steal him for a couple of bucks on Saturday. He may be flying below the radar here in Yankee/Red Sox country.

Although he has yet to make an error, his defense at second is reportedly rough. He'll probably start the season in Charlotte to work on his d. The statheads and scouts seem to think he'll have respectable power, high average, and low walk rate. Juan Uribe (blech) will probably be the starting 2b on opening day, but Ramirez may end up there. Of course, he'll also be competing with Danny Richar. It's a crowded field.

Brian Anderson has gotten a ton of ST ABs because of injuries. His line before today's game, with 39 ABs, was .359/.468/.641 and he already has a homerun today.

He is competing with Jerry Owens and Carlos Quentin for the White Sox final starting outfield spot. Owens is fast, but doesn't have much going for him (other than frequent groin injuries) and Carlos Quentin (tore up the minor leagues, but has a nagging shoulder injury).

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays brawled in the second inning of a spring training game Wednesday, an inning after Yankees pitcher Heath Phillips was ejected after hitting Rays prospect Eva Longoria with a pitch.

I say way over for Tampa Bay. Here's my fearless prediction for '08 - they get the wildcard. You heard it here first!

This only confirms my (rather misguided) feelings about my previous prediction. They aren't afraid of anyone and are willing to duke it out. The mighty Rays are fightin' mad! Look out AL East!*

And sadly, Evan Longoria is no relation to uber-hot Eva. I was really hoping for big sis to be attending lots of games, giving the networks yet one more reason to show her in the crowd at sporting events.

*Why in the hell am I getting all rah-rah about the Rays?
