bleedorange
one dude's black-ish. a lot of people don't like being around people who think. you'd think that would be less the case when selecting leaders. I was trying not to go there, but yeah. No, really, they do
kwall
A lot of times I enjoy debating in this thread because the level of discourse is higher than most other places I can find (with the exception of friends and family). However, it makes it difficult when blanket statements like this are thrown out that blow my previous sentence right out of the water. Not all people who are not voting for Obama are racist or scared of intellect. They just disagree. But whatever.my thoughts exactly.

But whatever.some you listed were personal observations. some were even facts (one dude is in fact blackish). but whatever. i don't think anyone said "all" people not voting for obama are racist or scared of intellect. that would be foolish. if someone did, you'll need to point that out. John Smith
The right wing media machine has for years been attacking professors on college campuses, for years they have been attacking the "ivy league elitists" even as they elect their own. They have in the last thirty years spent an inordiante amount of time harping on people who think too much etc... They sell their candidates as being like you and me (Wanna drinka bear with Bush? Sara's a hockey mom...ring a bell?) It's just the way it is. Why all the anti-education, anti-intellectual, elitist bias we hear from the right? Why glorify someone who barely graduated from the Naval Academy(thank goodness daddy and grandpa were Admirals, ring a bell?) and demonize someone who graduated with honors from Columbia and Harvard Law? How is being well educated ever a negative? Near last or not, what university is more elite than one of the service academy's? None that I can think of.

Sweet Papa Crimbo
Sadly, I know people who wont vote for Obama because he's black. Agreed. And conversely, I know people who will vote for Obama onlyBECAUSE he is black. We still have a long way to go.

quarter23cd
Not all people who are not voting for Obama are racist or scared of intellect. They just disagree. But whatever. No, I absolutely agree with you, which is why I was trying to go out of my way not to include that. Yeah, no secret that there's going to be some percentage of the vote (from both parties) that will vote because of prejudices--it sucks, but its a reality we all knew going in. The education thing--meh--I know plenty of intelligent conservatives. There's an argument about the whole populism thing of "Real Americans" which tends to mock intelligent and articulate people as "talking down", so I don't know what to make of that. I'm really more interested in knowing, really, what in what he is suggesting is so objectionable and to mount a huge enough backlash to carry an otherwise lackluster campaign? I mean, if that's the case, if the Dems had run Hillary, she'd be down by 30 points due to GOP backlash, am I right? I just want to understand it better. In an environment where a GOP president is presiding over the nationalization of Wall Street, how on earth is anything the Dems are suggesting (which is nothing THAT drastic) is so freaking scary? Honestly. I'm curious.
NightOfJoy
Agreed. And conversely, I know people who will vote for Obama onlyBECAUSE he is black. We still have a long way to go. I asked a pal of mine recently why he's supporting McCain.......he said because Obama would raise taxes........and because he's a Muslim. You can imagine my surprise that my buddy.....college educated........holds a high degree of responsibility at a major corporation....responsible family man.......lucid thinker.......bought into the lies and claptrap spewed out by the Right (there are LOTS of emails going around claiming Obama is a Muslim). Either that or its because Obama is black.....and my bud wont admit that to me. It makes me crazy thinking about it.

John Smith
Not all people who are not voting for Obama are racist or scared of intellect. They just disagree. But whatever. I fully agree but those are exactly the people FOx news is playing to when they talk about Obama's Muslim religion/upbringing or the terrorist fist bump. It is those people Rush is playign to when he talks about Obama's Arab-African background when Rush knows darn well what Obama's heritage and background are. They know the truth but they allude to these other issues to let you know that Obama is not like you, he's like them.
John Smith
it's why right wing talk radio and fox news and talk shows like oprah are so popular right now. Why think when these outlets will tell you how to think or at the very minimum direct you towards the answer they want you to arrive at.
austrya
one dude's black-ish. Yawn all you want, but I know people who are not voting for him for this very reason. I might also add that one certain member of my extended family agrees with him on almost every topic but still won't vote for him because he's black.
Analogman
Pitbull Mom Lipstick Launches... Really Some ideas should just stay ideas. It was only a matter of time before someone took the "lipstick on a pitbull" literally. Pitbullmom.com launched this week, featuring 2 shades of lipstick - "Pale'n Pink" and "Republican Red." The shades are indeed as bad as the names. "American women across the country have been holding their lipstick in the air as a sign of support for Sarah Palin," claims partner Fess Crockett, "And we felt that the time was right for women everywhere to more boldly display their allegiance through Pit Bull Mom." Pitbullmom is targeting "today's conservative women" and features not only the worst shades of lipstick out there, but t-shirts, tumblers, water bottles and a 5-pack of lipbalm as well. One of the other founders says, "Our feeling is that PBM's (Pit Bull Mom's) everywhere will want to join this movement. We are all inspired by the same beliefs and ideals as the candidate." We don't know which is worse - bad makeup or another annoying acronym. But, they are donating 10% of the proceeds to the Special Olympics, which is the only good thing we can say.By DAME
RaspberryJam
Times are tough man, but if Palin gets to go up against Biden, mark my words..I'm treating myself & buying a shit ton of Lambic for that scene. The good stuff I always stare at in the booze shops but pass up for Boulevard or something affordable. I have something to look forward to now. Lambic is special. So special that I will seriously consider moving to Belgium if a certain person gets elected. Have you ever been there? You've never met a bunch of nicer, happier people in your life. I'm sure it has everything to do with the excellent beer and french fries and nothing to do with its excellent education system, amazing roads, guaranteed healthcare, public transportation. You'd think that they would be miserable paying so many taxes and with crappy weather, but no! Happy! or just really drunk all of the time.

She and my brother took a trip there last summer to visit her 96 year old grandmother. She also has a brother who lives in Switzerland. He was born here but moved to Europe after he finished school. He's almost 50 now and said he will never move back here. I have to agree with you on the beer. And the people. In addition to my sis in law's parents, I've met many of their friends. Couldn't understand alot of what they were saying but there was alot of smiling that went on.
