Jesusetc84
I think Wilco, due to their variety of sounds attracts fans from different musical backgrounds. When I got into Wilco, I didn't even own a single country album. I was a huge fan of the Beatles and The Velvets though, so albums like Summer Teeth, and YHF hit me right off the bat, but I found A.M. and parts of being there incredibly corny. On the opposite end of the spectrum, someone who's first music love is more rootsy music will see Pieholden as boring, and a lot of Summer Teeth that way. When I bought Summerteeth I was OBSESSED with Magical Mystery Tour, Pet Sounds, and Loaded, so heh...it was like the best album I could possibly hear at the time given my tastes. Jesusetc84
I could just as easily ask why all the swooning love for Pieholden? It's not a bad song, but there are so many better songs in the Wilco arsenal. I personally prefer the rock-n-roll Wilco over the ballady/poppy Wilco. Give me a set list with Misunderstood, ATWYS, Spiders, Casino Queen, Passenger Side, Outtasite, Monday, Dreamer in my Dreams, Box Full of Letters, Too Far Apart, Hoodoo Voodoo, IATTBYH, Pot Kettle, Handshake Drugs, Shot in the Arm, Kicking Television, Thanks I Get, Lets Not Get Carried Away and I would be one happy camper. See you're a perfect example of what I just said... Wilco being a band of such immense variety brings fans who have different tastes outside of Wilco. For example, I love the Rolling Stones, but if I listed my favorite RS songs, none would be the typical fuzzed out riff ones people mention; My favorites would be Moonlight Mile, Wild Horses, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Salt of the Earth, Shine a Light. I personally like songs I can sit in a dark room with headphones on and feel something from, or at least ones that give me something to think about...Box Full of Letters doesn't fit into that category. hazel
this thread inspired me to listen to summerteeth, i have been sitting on my bed with my laptop and my ipod, with cnn and msnbc on the tv (with sound down) its all i watch these days because i am so excited about obama and it looks like hes going to win. i actually yell at the tv when i feel it necessary. pieholden came on and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. and then how to fight loneliness comes on after. jeffs voice does something to me like neil youngs did when i was 14 years old when i first heard him. jeff voice makes me sad, happy, makes my stomach ache, gives me the goosebumps. i know a lot of you feel the same way. oh and when he screams when he sings and his voice breaks, OMG that really gets to me. going to a wilco or a jeff solo show is the best thing in the world for me because i know i am surrounded by wilco/jeff fans. that makes me feel really good. i would be nice to know someone in real life who felt the same way. i love jeff tweedy. viatroy
WAMC, the public radio behemoth of the northeast, uses a lot of Wilco in their intro's, etc. They just launched Pieholden Suite (the last instrumental bit) as the official theme music of their 3 hour morning show. They're just giddy for Wilco after the Tanglewood show.

Littlebear
I have no idea why there is a dislike of "Pieholden Suite" (there is??), since it's my fave song of Summerteeth, and giving the fact it's my fave Wilco album, it's my fave Wilco song. Why? Well, because of the music. There are three gems in one song here, and it's more perfectly done than anything McCartney could do on Abbey Road. Thinking about it, only John Lennon succeeded - with stuff like "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and "I Am the Walrus".
