yea, it is one of my favorite songs from that period. Tim O'Brien does a great version of it on Red on Blonde.

LouieB

Yep. GREAT song. The Jerry Garcia Band also kills with that song.

I really dig the line "let's disconnect these cables, overturn these tables...this place don't make sense to me no more."

edit: also "He can ride down Niagra Falls in the barrels of your skull" (Man of Peace). For my money Infidels has more killer lines than almost anything Dylan had written since the pre-motorcycle crash in '66.

Almost all mentioned already, but absolutely worth a repeat:

And you, you took me in,

You loved me then

You didn't waste time.

And I, I never took much,

I never asked for your crutch.

Now don't ask for mine.

***

You've been with the professors

And they've all liked your looks

With great lawyers you have

Discussed lepers and crooks

You've been through all of

F. Scott Fitzgerald's books

You're very well read

It's well known

***

Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial

Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while

But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues

You can tell by the way she smiles

***

It's not always easy kicking someone out

Gotta wait a while - it can be an unpleasant task

Sometimes somebody wants you to give something up

And tears or not, it's too much to ask

***

People tell me it's a sin

To know and feel too much within.

I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring.

She was born in spring, but I was born too late

Blame it on a simple twist of fate.

Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,

None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.

What looks large from a distance,

Close up ain't never that big

He woke up, the room was bare

He didn't see her anywhere.

He told himself he didn't care, pushed the window open wide,

Felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate

Brought on by a simple twist of fate.

One of my VERY favorite lines from perhaps my favorite Bob song:

But nobody has any respect

Anyway they already expect you

To just give a check

To tax-deductible charity organizations (or, "organ-i-zaaa-shunnnns")

---------------------------------------------------

And another - who else would think of such a crazy rhyme?

What can I say about Claudette? Ain't seen her since January

She could be respectably married or runnin' a whorehouse in Buenos Aires

I'd love to see this thread get closed when it gets to 1000 posts. Anyway, here's another:

I started out on burgundy

But soon hit the harder stuff

Everybody said they'd stand behind me

When the game got rough

But the joke was on me

There was nobody even there to bluff

I'm going back to New York City

I do believe I've had enough

here's a few, though waaaay to many to mention...

Your cracked country lips,

I still wish to kiss,

As to be under the strength of your skin.

Your magnetic movements

Still capture the minutes I'm in

Tough Mama

Meat shakin' on your bones

No man alive will come to you

With another tale to tell,

But you know that we shall meet again

If your mem'ry serves you well

I like to do just like the rest, I like my sugar sweet,

But guarding fumes and making haste,

It ain't my cup of meat.

Most of the time

I'm clear focused all around,

Most of the time

I can keep both feet on the ground,

I can follow the path, I can read the signs,

Stay right with it when the road unwinds,

I can handle whatever I stumble upon.

I don't even notice she's gone,

Most of the time.

My love she speaks softly,

She knows there's no success like failure

And that failure's no success at all.

May God bless and keep you always,

May your wishes all come true,

May you always do for others

And let others do for you.

May you build a ladder to the stars

And climb on every rung,

May you stay forever young

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true

Nothing that I wouldn't do

Go to the ends of the earth for you

To make you feel my love

ok, ok i'll stop....

Oh, the Union Central is pullin' out and the orchids are in bloom,

I've only got me one good shirt left and it smells of stale perfume.

In fourteen months I've only smiled once and I didn't do it consciously,

Somebody's got to find your trail,

I guess it must be up to me.

There's a neon light ablaze in this green smoky haze, laughter down on Elizabeth Street.

And a lonesome bell tone in that valley of stone, where she bathed in a stream of pure heat.

I married Isis on the fifth day of May,

But I could not hold on to her very long.

So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away

For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong.

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes

and just for that one moment i could be you

yes, i wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes

you'd know what a drag it is to see you

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties

Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise

While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell

An innocent man in a living hell

Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don't criticize

What you can't understand

Your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is

Rapidly agin'.

Please get out of the new one

If you can't lend your hand

For the times they are a-changin'.

Your brain is a-bleedin'

And your legs can't seem to stand

Your eyes fix on the shotgun

That you're holdin' in your hand

Dunno how I overlooked this one, brilliant.

Sorry to indulge, but a few more:

Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space

Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face

-------------------------------------------------------------

Just how much abuse will you be able to take?

Well, there's no way to tell by that first kiss

What's a sweetheart like you doin' in a dump like this?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Democracy don't rule the world

You'd better get that in your head

This world is ruled by violence

But I guess that's better left unsaid

From Broadway to the Milky Way

That's a lot of territory indeed

And a man's gonna do what he has to do

When he's got a hungry mouth to feed

Well, today has been a sad and lonesome day

Yeah, today has been a sad and lonesome day

I'm just sitting here thinking with my mind a million miles away

Well, they're doing the double shuffle, throwing sand on the floor

They're doing the double shuffle, they're throwing sand on the floor

When I left my longtime darling, she was standing in the door

Well, I'm stranded in the city that never sleeps

Some of these women they just give me the creeps

I'm avoidin' the south side the best I can

These memories I got they can strangle a man

Well, I came ashore in the dead of the night

Lot of things can get in the way when you're tryin' to do what's right

I'm not sorry for nothing I've done

I'm glad I fought, I only wish we'd won

The Siamese twins are comin' to town

People can't wait, they've gathered around

When I left my home the sky split open wide

I never wanted to go back there, I'd rather have died

how the fuck did this album come out on september 11 , what the hell was Bob Dylan thinking I would have freaked out.

You know Ive never seen an interview with him talking about 911.
