An interesting article, indeed.

Whenever I think of Chicago, I always feel like I have to ask my parents why we left. My mom was quite happy living there, and did for a good part of her adult life. I'm a little bitter about our exodus. My parents try to tell me that our neighborhood was a little 'dangerous,' but I think they've failed to realize that the neighborhood where we lived (close to the intersection of Clark and Buena) is, simply put, frickin' sweet!

It's easy to feel a sense of belonging in Chicago. I hope I get the chance to move back sometime soon.

I was just telling my friends yesterday how recently Naperville was voted one of the best, if not THE best, city to live in the US. I would LOVE to move there....have the suburban life for the kiddos but not be too far from Chicago :wub

SOME-day...*sigh*

Naperville fucking sucks. It's where a person goes to die on the inside.

I don't know how y'all handle the winters up there.

Winter fucking sucks. That's why I'm moving to CA. So long, cold ass Chicago.

:lol Naperville is much publicized but many of the surrounding areas blow it away. It's on many best of lists solely because of it's size >100k people. My town is maybe a 1/5 of the size and is closer to the city, train, etc. and you don't hear shit about it. I'm ok with that.

Yes, it was nice reading a Jeff Tweedy quote about Chicago over breakfast in the freshly unrolled New York Times off the doorstep. I dunno though, Crawford, Texas, or Chicago? thats a tough choice for a Western White House. Here's to the soon to be newly employed brush cutter :cheers good riddance!

When I lived there it was all about hats and scarfs and the right socks....some of us have a little problem with the amount of hats :stunned. I loved living in Chicago and couldn't agree more with the statement of people being comfortable with who they are. Nice article thanks for the post.

How about Downers Grove?!?

Apologies for hijacking the thread... Downers Grove, IMO, is a better bet. I'd prefer to live there vs Naperville. Naperville is sprawling and full of chain stores/restaurants. It's a nice city but overrated as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone read any of Kotlowitz's books? he's written some excellent contemporary books on race relations. My favorite is "There are no Children here," which takes place in the early 90's in a Chicago housing project.

Do you make ALOT of money, I mean a whole ton? Naperville is a nice enough place, but very expensive. You don't get to be the best place to bring up kids without high property values and high taxes. Naperville has both.

Strange how this thread has turned into a discussion of Naperville. Not a horrid place if you like chain restaurants downtown and lots of stuck up white people......(welcome back walrus.... :lol ) Not too far from Chicago? Actually it is at the far end of the next county (DuPage) and people from Naperville rarely get to the city since it is nearly an hour by car to downtown (when traffic and construction are light).

They also steal dogs there.

This is not entirely accurate. Naperville is large and there are plenty of affordable areas within. Yes, there are the McMansions you find all over in the burbs, but it does have a diverse housing selection and quality schools. Also, train access and choice of multiple expressways to the city.

I personally know several people who do not make a "whole ton" of money and live quite comfortably in Naperville. This is why it is high on this list.

Apologies for being part of the hijacking of the thread...

but no, I don't make A LOT of money and yes, I heard many people from different income levels can find a comfortable home there. Also, an hour to get to Chicago is much better to me than the 17 hours it would take me now. I've seen some of the city but not all I WANT to see...YET!!! I too have a friend in Downers Grove which is why I asked about it. I've travelled through many of the suburbs and Darien, Bolling Brook, Downers Grove and Willowbrook all look the same to me. I have many pictures of those cool water towers :)

I wouldn't be moving anytime soon. My current b/f says he wouldn't have qualms about moving out there, so that's good.

For now, I'll just keep dreaming... ;)

I think stuck up white people are the best.
