Jake
21 Reasons Why Jay Bennett Should Be Back In Wilco
lamradio
Reasons why Wilco shouldn't bring back Jay Bennett: 1. He's not Nels Cline BUT, very interesting article anway.. The writer makes some good points. Especially: 11. Forget the Flowers - This style of playing is my favorite and Jay Bennett does it better than anyone. It's a crying shame that this song is not a staple in the live set but maybe that's because it cannot be played by anyone else. In the name of the fans we demand that at a minimum Jay appear once per show to play "Forget the Flowers" I can agree with this. The last time I heard Nels try to pull off that style, it was kind of weak. Yes, he's still Nels and he made it work, but it wasn't even in the same ball park as Jay. pmancini100
last time i saw wilco, they opened with that song, and it was great. if they wanna see jay bennett play it, then they should go get a bootleg. there were some really cool videos on that article, though. I love his contributions, but after watching those videos, I think the current incarnation of Wilco is better.

lamradio
Never saw Wilco w/ Bennett. I love his contributions, but after watching those videos, I think the current incarnation of Wilco is better. I'll second this statement. I saw them with Bennett in 1997 and yes, it was an amazing show; one that I will never forget, but their current lineup is about as close to perfect as one band can get. explodo
The answer to the question is no.The answer to the question is no. The answer in my heart, which ignores silly things like personal squabbles, is an emphatic yes.
Guest Gym Teacher Man
Where are the cheap shots? i just re-read it and i think maybe i was reading into the tone of a couple of the comments wrong. either way, honky is possibly a racist term. maybe.

dondoboy
From ction: Here's a quick test. Which do you prefer: - Bob Stinson- Nels Cline ?
fatheadfred
6. Harmonies - Jay has a strange voice that is really not suited for solo placement, but his scratchy baritone matched with Tweedy's lead and Stirratt's high harmonies is simply awesome. Creepy sometimes, yes, but fantastico just the same. *Example: "Casino Queen" live. His deep vocals MADE that song. you sound like a frog and you look like one too
nodep5
I went into reading this article ready to be annoyed, but I almost left convinced. I tend to agree with the majority of things stated hear, most importantly that Wilco shows use to be so much less serious and flat out intense than they are now. However, I would never wish the band to be dealing with drug use issues and inner turmoil for the sake of good art, so the new Wilco is likely healthier and I hope healthy people can make great music. Also, I think musician types will view Nels Cline and his guitar technique as more astute and skilled, but I think Jay fits the Neil Young, let'g go for the vibe vs. technical artistry. I tend to side on with Neil on this one Overall Wilco with Jay is held more dear to me (I grew up on this stuff), and I agree with this article, which did not take cheap shots as far as I can see. shoesgetcold3
#9 may be true but does Nels red flood pants not do the trick?
Moss
No, I like the current line up. It works both ways. Sure Nelse sounds different on the early stuff but Jay would never be able to come up with something like that solo in Impossible Germany.
lamradio
Jay would never be able to come up with something like that solo in Impossible Germany. Exactly
SlowBurn68
The idea of Wilco wouldn't be the same.
jakobnicholas
I hate to say it, but they make some good points. Ditto. I like the current Wilco, but there's no denying the incredible run of Being There, Summerteeth and YHF.....AND the Mermaid discs. We'll never know how those records would have sounded without Bennett, but he contributed a good amount. I disagree with this: "10. My Darling - the prettiest song on Summerteeth was composed entirely by Bennett." Maybe it IS pretty. But I skip it many times.

dondoboy
#1.I don't know if he can legitimately be called the producer. He may have known what track was on what tape to a greater degree, but producer?
Sparky speaks
As much as I like Being There, if you bring back Jay there would be no Wilco.......So why does it matter?........It seemed obvious Jeff and him were at the end of their partnership....The new lineup is the best contemporary band in the US today......They played Forget the Flowers in Worcester in December and it was great.......Remember you would have no Impossible Germany or Side with the Seeds as we know it without Nels.......Life goes on......I think the Stones should bring back Mick Taylor.......
