update: ESPN is reporting the survivor as Nick Schuyler. No word on any of the others.

Person found alive where NFL players disappeared

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Coast Guard says it has found a person clinging to an overturned boat off Florida's Gulf Coast, but could not immediately confirm whether it is the same boat carrying NFL players Corey Smith, Marquis Cooper and two other men.

The Coast Guard has been searching for the four men since they were reported missing early Sunday morning. As of Monday morning, they had searched 16,000 square miles off Florida's Gulf Coast.

Petty Officer Sondra-Kay Kneen said they have located a vessel Monday and "a person on that vessel."

No further details were provided.

Cooper is an Oakland Raiders linebacker. Smith is a Detroit Lions free-agent defensive end. William Bleakley and Nick Schuyler, the other men on board, are both former University of South Florida players.

The person found is Nick Schuyler, one of the USF players. He is alive in serious condition.

This is close to where I am. If you're interested in up to date details check out http://www.tampabay.com

Wow, according to that website (thnx) it doesn't sound too good.

This NE Chiefs trade looks a bit fishy. Pioli must have threatened to come out with more dirt on Bellichick.

Yes that must me it

But honestly...

Also, doesn't it give NE some cap room?

Fine point. I heard some points over the radio today (my 15 minute drive took over an hour because of the snow :realmad ) that were pretty interesting. First off, the patriots have a lot of key pieces coming up for FA next year, so the trade obviously frees up some much needed cap space. I guess Vrabel was going to be released and the Patriots would obviously rather have him sent of to KC than cut a fan favorite who then jumps ships and ends up on the Jets, Bills, Phins.

The USCG search will be suspended at 6:30pm. 2 hours to pray guys. This is so sad on every angle. What it must feel like to be stuck at sea and what it must be like to not know if you'll see your loved one again.

i haven't seen the bears mentioned in a single rumor or blog or anything, regarding free agency. anyone else see anything?

i thought TJ Hou.. whatever his name is was a lock to sign with the vikings. i was surprised too.

What it must feel like to be stuck at sea

without a doubt, one of the most terrifying things i can thing of. ultimately, the reason i'll probably never go on a cruise.

i feel really sad for all involved. i hope they turn up, but it doesn't look good.

The Bears have made their first move toward filling some of the obvious holes on their roster by signing offensive lineman Frank Omiyale to a four-year contract.

Omiyale, who spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, has signed a deal worth between $11.5 million and $14 million, according to an NFL source.

Yep, I thought Vikings too. I can't tell what's going on with this free agency season. Cassel, Orlofsky, Cutler, Ray Lewis, etc. Its all very strange.

Dude the Jets just signed promised to bring "violence" to his new team's defense.

They meant "violins" for Favre's going away party.

He really wanted to sign w/ the Vikes, but they pretty much admitted they couldn't pay what other suitors could.

Kind of surprising that he'd want to sign with the Vikes anyways, considering the Vikes don't have a stable (or some could say solid) QB to toss him some balls.

I thought they were pretty confident with Jackson.

I thought they were pretty confident with Jackson.

They brought in Sage Rosenfels from Houston to challenge him for the starter. Now there's discussion about trying to get Cutler on the cheap. I bet the Lions would give up more than the Vikings to get Cutler, though. Jackson had a couple of decent games this season, but I think Childress finally realizes he's reached his potential, and it just wasn't he hoped it was.

Has it been established why those dudes were on the water in those conditions in the first place?

They were fishing. They probably should have turned back sooner but who knows why not. They may have been trying to wait the waves out (they were pretty far out & anchored) or just didn't know what they were doing.

This is new and weird:

The only man rescued so far from an overturned boat in the Gulf of Mexico told Coast Guard investigators a bizarre story about the fate of the other three.

Nick Schuyler, 24, told investigators that about two to four hours after their boat capsized Saturday in rough seas, one of the two professional football players gave up hope and let himself be swept away, according to family members of two of the missing men.

A few hours later, the second one did the same.

"We were told that Nick said the two NFL players took their life jackets off and drifted out to sea," said Bob Bleakley, whose son Will, 25, is also still missing.

With former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith gone, only Schuyler and Bleakley remained clinging to the boat.

Then, sometime Monday morning, Will Bleakley thought he saw a light in the distance and decided to take off his life jacket and swim to it, hoping to get help.

"I think he was delusional to think he could swim someplace," Bleakley said.

Ray Sanchez, Cooper's cousin, said the Coast Guard told him the same thing, but cautioned against taking Schuyler's story as gospel at this point.

"We're not 100 percent sure where his head was at," Sanchez said. "He'd been through a lot."

That's just crazy and sad.

Sports radio is going crazy around Detroit with talk of Cutler.

No huge surprise.

The Bears need receivers, but I hope they don't seriously consider T.O. Besides, he'd hate it there -- the offense is way too conservative.

oh lord, i hope not too. THEY NEED TO TRY AND GET BOLDEN. of course i haven't heard a peep about them doing so.
