Greatest Guitarists of All Time

Recommended Posts

I have read interviews that say he does not really practice much outside of getting ready for the occasional tour. He spends all his time fixing up cars in his spare time. Like you said, his skills have not diminished, he is as good as ever, maybe better.

I have always read that he plays for several hours each day. You can watch a nice feature about him, and his cars on the Speed Vision website.

Some one uploaded this show on Hunger City. All the clips are up on YouTube. Beck has a nice solo on this Dylan cover.

I just went back through this whole thread, and I don't think that I saw Prince mentioned a single time.

Wow.

Shame on us.

Check out his solo here... it starts around 3:30.

And check out the look on Dhanni Harrison's face while Prince is going off. Freaking priceless.

There's a whole thread about that clip - you started it sometime ago. I still don't care for it.

I remember that. I was merely referring to his failure of being mentioned in this thread. And, we need further shaming for the omission of Eddie Hazel:

I like Prince and think he is talented as hell. but I just don't think of him as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Amazing musician but his guitar playing never seemed to be ground breaking or anything. I have never really heard any guitar players say that Prince was a big influence on them. For songwriting and overall musicianship but not for pure guitar playing.

In one of my old punk bands, the lead guitar player always called Prince one of the biggest influences on his playing. And, I could hear it.

So, yeah, I've known a couple guitar players who said so. But, I guess that Prince has always been known more for his hits than his guitar playing (even, for the most part, by other guitar players), so I can see your point. But I definitely see him as one of the greats.

And, Eddie Hazel, too.

I enjoy the solo Prince did on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," he really nails it, but I'd still take the ones he did on "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," "Purple Rain" or "Let's Go Crazy" as they're more memorable, pefectly suit the songs melodically and emotionally and don't overstay their welcome.

I don't know if he's been mentioned yet, but Elliot Easton of The Cars did some really great guitar work back in the day.

I think that I may have mentioned Elliott Easton way back early on in the thread. But yeah, he kills me, too.

You would know Thin Lizzy's songs: "The Boys are Back in Town", "Dancing in the Moonlight", "The Cowboy Song".

Yeah, you know those tunes, for sure.

Too bad about the apparent brandy and champagne death mix but I don't think I could name a Thin Lizzy tune. I'm sure he was talented and all but "greatest guitarist of all time" list? Hmmm..

Maybe well known, famous, or outstanding guitar player is a better term. It's no big deal.

When I think of Thin Lizzy, and guitar players, I think of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham.

well, he was huge in the uk, especially his own country. also, he's kind of one of those guitarist guitarists like steve vai, allan holdsworth, eric johnson, etc. not in the mainstream, but still respected.

When I was a young lad learning to play guitar this Gary Moore solo was one of my faves (spent hours trying to learn it):

Solo starts at 2:04 and still sounds amazing.
