Analogman
It seems to me that dude is becoming Weird Al. I watched his new video, or parts of it anyhow, somewhere the other day. It seemed like something else he had already put out. I don't know the name of it, though.
Jesusetc84
"EMINEM IS THE MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE OF THE YEAR" THIS IS 100 MILLION PERCENT UNTRUE. TAKE IT BACK! Here are a few that might contend; Green DayU2Grizzly BearAnimal Collective And then whatever Q4 brings... I'll bite. I'd much rather hear a new Eminem than a new Green Day (or a new U2 for that matter given U2 are so far past their prime and live on bloated hype and past glories alone.) It is pretty Weird Al-esque satire, something he'd already done, but the album as a whole is rather good.
Calexico
Not really. A month and a half? Back when I was much more interested in tracking down leaks, I pretty often got hold of albums as much as three or four months before their release dates. I once got an album before it was even recorded. It was awesome.

TheMaker
Big names on big labels rarely leak more than a week or two before their release. This has less to do with the artists and more to do with security measures taken by the likes of Columbia et al. A lot of them don't send out physical early review copies of records anymore, opting instead for listening parties and the like, which pretty much means the disc doesn't have a chance to leak before it enters the retail chain. Once you hear about review copies of a given album circulating, though, you can pretty much bet your life/farm/wife/kids that it'll be available for download within days, if not hours. solace
yes it "is"comparatively speaking 6 weeks is not early... 3-4 months is early. YHF "leaked" almost a year early (i realize that was a special case) as for Eminem... i like him but the new album is mostly awful. he's become a caricature of himself. the new Green Day is basically an American Idiot rehash musically too. we get it Billy Joe, you want to be Queen. Some of the songs on that album are on par with his best work. Some of them aren't. But as a whole, I think it's a decent to good album.
Guest Speed Racer
Was it by Jandek? I was once - by luck and pure fluke - the first person to receive a Jandek release and post it to the mailing list. I nearly crapped my pants with glee.

Synthesizer Patel
some of the funniest modern leaks are the last Deerhunter album - cos the lead singer fucked up and left a file of it on his sendspace account, or something; and also Joanna Newsom's album Ys leaking because Pitchfork left a copy on their server by a mistake. I'd say 4 months or more is an early leak, not this. Also didn't Animal Collective call for Strawberry Jam to be leaked because a couple of the tracks leaked, and they wanted the album to be heard as a whole?

fatheadfred
Maybe they leaked it to gather a critique from the fervent fans. So far they have gleaned:1) it is the best Wilco album ever cuz it's, like, a mix of everything they've done so far2) it is not produced very well3) even though it is not produced well, it is still good4) where is Nels? Glenn?5) it's kind of short in length6) they better ask Harrison if they can use his bit7) they better footnote the one song with reference to "on and on an on"8) I am not that fond of it, but I am just one person, so forget me. LOL, stop being such a douche. This isn't the Impressions thread. Back on topic. The earliest I can remember an album leaking was TV on the Radio's Return to Cookie Mountain..which found its was to my email early April, but wasn't out on CD until September (if memory serves) The Deerhunter -Microcastle is another good example. The Shins last record leaked in October and didn't come out until late January. A month is not really an "early leak" it's much more average then that. Also Eminem is pure garbage..if you want Hip Hop listen to the new DOOM record.
Ottawateeth
I didn't bother reading all of the replies so I apologize if this was already mentioned...wilco make their living from touring (which I'm assuming also includes merch sales). Jeff Tweedy even said so in a recent interview that I read or saw. I'm sure they would like it if they sold more records so they didn't have to tour so much but that's the way it is for a band like wilco....besides, they'll sell a lot more records then the average band so I'm sure they're not losing any sleep over lost record sales because of leaks and streaming...as for the comparison of eminem to wilco, I like to think of it this way: eminem is in it for the money and wilco are in for the love of music and art. I could be wrong but that's the feeling I get...and this is reflected in each one's music and lifestyle.

ThisIsNowhere
If they cared about it leaking they wouldn't have passed copies around months in advance.
rhino4evr
If this is true then why record/release an albumn at all? It's not a hobby. Actually there is a good chance that it started as a hobby and formed into a career. Still I think its safe to say Wilco takes their music a little more serious then Eminem, who makes money exploiting mass media stereotpes and pop culture controversies. He's not interested in moving anything forward, but instead trying to capitalize on what will get him the most press. He's a sideshow act like most pop stars.

But I do it for the love of art/music and to share this art with others.. I would bet if you asked Jeff, he would have a similar answer... And oh yeah, a few bucks here and there and free beer is just an added bonus for me.
