appreciate the mix and I'm downloading it. I'll let you know what I think.

Use Mediafire or another file sharing site next time though- rapidshare is super slow to download compared to some others.

i'd made this mix for my mix-partner, but he chose the baroque pop one instead of this. but, i thought, rather than waste it, i'll uploaded it too.

summer means: southern soul

01 It's Been A Change - Solomon Burke

02 What's So Wrong With You Loving Me - Irma Thomas

03 Mumble In My Ear - Marcell Strong

04 Sock It To Me Baby - James Carr

05 Love's Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down (Part 1) - Chuck Brooks

06 He's Gone - Doris Duke

07 Things Get Better - Eddie Floyd

08 Do What You Gotta Do - Clarence Carter

09 I Git A Little Lonely - Little Richard

10 Now That I'm Gone (When Are You Leaving) - Sandra Phillips

11 Never Like This Before - William Bell

12 The Freedom Under Certain Konditions Marching Band - Raw Spitt

13 Try A Little Tenderness (Take 1) - Otis Redding

14 Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home - Swamp Dogg

i actually think this is stronger than the other one. "what's so wrong with you loving me", for a start, is one of my favourite songs of all time; and "try a little tenderness" is obvious, but this is an alt take - so worth hearing.

I'm away for two weeks now. And not only is that an open invite to would-be burglars, but also allows me the luxury of listening to your mixes whilst on the road. Some I'm loaded up with joss ackland's baroque pop and southern soul mixes, GtrPlyr's eccentrics collection; DAngerer09's Less Than Popular rock and Pop Todd's effort.

I'll report back to class (and the police) in a fortnight.

Sweet mix! Glad to see some favorites like Doris Duke and James Carr... Also happy to see some artists I've been meaning to check out on here :D.

I'm halfway through and loving it.

Hi Joss, hope you are liking my mix. Funny story, actually, about my introduction to the marvel that is Synthesizer Patel....which I must finally confess to, as I am at heart an honest girl. :lol At the time that we all got our first taste of the new album through the initial streaming, a few of us were puzzling over figuring out the lyrics, over in that lyrics thread, and we were all stumped by one line in "You Never Know". I happened to have tickets then to see Mikael's side band, Pronto, in Los Angeles. At the show, I got to talk to him after his set (they were terrific!) and conversation naturally turned to the new album. I found myself telling him that one line in "You Never Know" was making us crazy trying to decipher it. Almost before I finished my sentence, Mikael gave a short nod of recognition and said "Synthesizer Patel!" Sure I had misunderstood him, I asked him to repeat it, and he did, adding, "Google it, and it will all make sense." I laughed and told him I would, and said that I was going to drop that into the lyrics thread as if I had just decoded it..."but not reveal the source!" He grinned and agreed that was a good plan. So that's exactly what I did, just kinda casually said in the lyrics thread, "After wrestling still longer with that elusive line in "You Never Know", after "It's a long, heavy hell".....going way out on a limb here, but could it possibly be......

"Synthesizer Patel"?

(google it)"

It made me giggle to present it that way. :) But not half as much as the videoclips of Synthesizer Patel did! That is some very funny shit. I recommend everybody view the clip you linked to!

Ever since Mikael supplied that missing lyric, I've kind of thought of him as Synthesizer Patel. I hope he figures out that bassoon part. Thanks for the Machadaynu link. I hadn't seen that. :lol

I can't believe Mikael has seen the tv show Look Around You! I wonder how he found out about that? For anyone that has not seen it, it's a comedy show from the uk which spoofs children's learning shows and a program called Tomorrow's World - from the uk. I don't know if america had similar shows, so maybe people won't get the joke. If you ever see Mikael again, you can tell him this interesting fact: Peter Serafinowicz (man in the Synthesizer Patel clip that says, "Well I suppose that's good news for all you bassoonists out there. Don't go throwing away our bassoons just yet") was the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

That is too funny! I knew that voice sounded familiar. :lol I will pass that tidbit along to Mikael when I get the chance.

I love that bit from the show where the kids are spraypainting a wall with graffiti...remember that one? "Look around you!" hahahaha

What are people using these days to create downloadable playlists? Is there a gold standard? It has been probably a year since I put a "mix tape" together and I need to get caught up on the technology.

For my mix I copied various CD tracks with "EAC" to a WAV format, then converted the .wav files in "Foobar2000" to MP3 (245 kbps VO) as the quality is pretty good in this setting. Then I just zipped all the mp3 files so that they could be uploaded/downloaded as 1 file (I used sendspace for hosting the file.)

Hey y'all, sorry it's been quiet round my parts for a while, got sidetracked by a few things but all cool and ticking over, mix is on disc and ready to send, upload will be here shortly...

Right, let's catch up!

So, I originally sent this in a private message to another boarder, but thought that it might be good enough to share.

So...

RAWK ME GENTILE

Song List:

25 O'Clock - The Dukes Of Stratosphear

XTC in disguise. This is pure, authentic psychedelic pop. Close your eyes and you could swear it was Syd and not XTC.

I've Been Lonely For So Long (demo version) - Fredrick Knight

One of several songs on this comp that came from another comp -- The Birmingham Sound: The Soul of Neil Hemphill. Pure, deep soul from the 60's.

Will He Be Waiting For Me - Dolly Parton

So much more than boobies. Dolly has a way of turning a phrase that can absolutely break my heart. The statement, and then the hesitation: "He will be waiting for me... He will be, won't he?" One of the best songwriters of the 20th century.

Tina - Camper Van Beethoven

From their first album (and my favorite): Telephone-Free Landslide Victory

Why Not Your Baby - Dillard & Clark

Gene Clark's career after he left The Byrds should have been at least equal to that of Crosby. The best songwriter in that band and this shows why.

You're Breaking My Heart - Harry Nilsson

Harry is my guy. His sense of humor is a big reason why.

Sure Hope You Mean It - Raphael Saadiq

One of the best hopes for modern RnB... because he isn't afraid to sound like a dusty.

Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway - The Humblebums

A perfect song. Period.

With My Face On The Floor - Emitt Rhodes

Emitt's record sounded like what Paul McCartney';s firs solo album SHOULD have sounded like. Released the same year, even.

The World Strikes One - Brotherhood Of Lizards

Martin Newell is a British eccentric in the great tradition of XTC and Robyn Hitchcock.

Walking Down the King's Road - Squ!re

80's mod revival. Should have been bigger.

Even If You Got Love - The Blue Notes

Another one from that Soul of Birmingham comp

Linda Linda - THE BLUE HEARTS

The Japanese Ramones

Incerteza - Beto Villares

Brazilian pop, that should sound good to American ears. In the tradition of Caetano and Tom Zé.

He's a Whore - Big Black

Steve Albini. Cheap Trick. Cover.

Got it?

I'm The Urban Spaceman - Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band

Vaudville meets 60's pop and Monty Python.

My Old Drunk Friend - Freakwater

Urban country from in the gutter.

Allamana - Desmond Dekker

Desmond Dekker did it first. Ska from the biggest badass in Jamaica,

Uncontrollable Urge - Devo

Twitch for me!

I'm On A One-Wheel - Dogbowl

Weirdo rock with a hook that is too big to forget.

Smile, Doris, Smile - The Donner Party Menu

Pure pop songcraft. If Brian Wilson were a member of the Elephant 6.

Frevo Rasgado - Gilberto Gil

Tropicalia master. Rock, Pagode, Samba. And great guitar playing, filtered through rose-colored Lennon glasses.

Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick - Ian Dury & The Blockheads

HIT! ME!!!!!

Oh Lord, Why Lord/Prayer - Parliament

Um. Just listen to this one. George Clinton does classical?

Samson & Delilah - Rev. Gary Davis

The original of the song The Dead made famous. They don't hold a candle to this.

these mixes do look great. Older one from me.

1) Jon Rae Fletcher – Big Talker

Jon lost his band and best friend last year. This is his mea culpa for

the whole bad situation as he returned to Victoria and enlisted

Katherine Calder (Immaculate Machine) and Darcy Hancock (Ladyhawk) to

help record a batch of songs that say I’m sorry.

The record was supposedly recorded in 40 minutes yet it has taken me

the first half to the year to realize just how brilliant it is.

2) Rock Plaza Central – Oh I Can.

Chris Eaton and the band put together another indecipherable concept

album. This one is based on Faulkner’s ‘Light In August’; an eight and

a half month pregnant woman’s trek to find the father of her unborn

child. I think this song is about the resolve needed to start the

search.

3) Old Man Ludecke – Proof of Love

Won the Juno for best folk album this year.

4) One Hundred Dollars - Fourteen Hour Day

One Hundred Dollars is the band Jon Rae Fletcher is saying sorry to.

Ian Russell and Jon were best buddies, Ian got Leukemia, and the band,

Jon Rae and the River, rockily broke up. Ian spent the next year in

and out of hospital with the firecracker of a lead singer, Simone

Schmidt, bugging him to get better and start another band.

This song has nothing to do with that – rather Simone Schmidt’s tale

of her Grandmother and the extreme loneliness that comes from one

spouse losing the other after 38 years of marriage. I love and cringe

at the image of the woman making choices to ‘Lay me down with you’ in

both getting married and wanting to dig a grave next to husband’s

resting place.

5) Woodpigeon – I Live in a Lot of Places.

Bought the 2009 release and a week later bought the catalogue. They

are from Calgary yet seem to tour Europe almost exclusively. What’s up

with that?

6) Brakes – Eternal Return

I love this album. It’s also one of my exceptions to the local theme.

7) A.C. Newman. – All of My Days and All of My Days Off

This CD has not fallen off after 100 listens..

8) The Acorn – I Made the Law

The band released this set of 2 minute songs last winter. It sounds

like a sweet taste of things to come.

9) Basia Bulat – Heart of My Own.

This is from a 2007 CBC recording of a song that will hopefully make

it on her next album. It has turned into my favourite track of hers

and if it is not on the new record, this young lady will be hearing

from me, literally.

(I got to know Basia’s Mom while waiting for sound checks to be over.

We’re email buds)

10) Bruce Pennisula – Crab Apples.

Wish this were better. Live, this band ROCKS. On record, the same

feelings are not captured. Good song though and I’ll have to wait

until the difficult second album to really become a fan.

11) Deep Dark Woods – All the Money I Had Is Gone

12) Eamon McGrath – Big River

Got a note from Lee last month about this guy. I had never heard of

him. Turns out Eamon is a wunderkind, churning out song after song and

widdling down 80 tracks to ’13 Songs of Whiskey and Light’. Tom Waits and Neil Young

as a teenager.

13) Fucked Up – Twice Born

You may want to skip this track. It is one of the heaviest things I

heard from the 2008 best of lists. Max Danger of the Deadly Snakes on

this track and had a part in the album.

14) Geoff Berner - One Shoe

Geoff rants about the murder of Neil Stonechild in Saskatoon. The

police used to deal with troublemakers by dumping them outside the

city in -40 degree weather. Fuck them.

15) Jay Clark and the Jones – Anastasia

Impressed with this band. Alt country from Toronto that I’ve tried to

see 3 or 4 times. Lead singer sounds like Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor.

I get the feeling Enrico would love this.

16) Joel Plaskett – Deny Deny Deny

Still digesting this 3cd jobby. Everything is in threes and this is my

song song song of the summer.

17) Sunparlour Players - Battle of ’77

Only thing I’ve heard from their new CD. If the rest is like this, it

will be top 10.

maybe we should put some parameters on the next version of mixtape trade off.

like...under 1 hour of music or something. this is probably just me, but i've always felt a really good mix did it's job in 9-12 songs.

I'm the opposite...I prefer a really long mix so that I can put it on, get lost in all the great music, and go about my business without having to stop and change the disc anytime soon. The more music, the better! :)

Tualla, you mix looks terrific! Downloading now. PopTodd, thanks for yours as well!
