Sweet Papa Crimbo
Because Kevan has never cheered for a player who has used steroids or a team that has had a steroid user on that team. I am guessing Kevan isn't a fan of most any professional sports teams. Well, generally, my post was equal parts sincerity and attempt to raz Yankee fans. Maybe it came across overly-aggressive, if so my apologies. However, regarding my assessment, I stick to it, even though I meant it to be taken tongue-in-cheek. A-Rod is a disgrace and a pariah. I cannot understand how someone could cheer for that guy with such pure, innocent-seeming joy. I can see begrudging appreciation because he helped the team you love. But the over-the-top-embracing-with-arms-wide-open thing you see in the crowd comes off just as phony as A-Rods always been; or at least it does to me. It grosses me out. For my part, and I don't mean to be holier-than-thou, but I refuse to cheer with true joy for anyone, my team or otherwise, who has a serisouly checkered past/present. I'm a Viking fan but my relationship with the team is very love-hate and always in danger of fading because they tend to field teams full of thugs more often than other teams. That kills me. The Moss/Culpepper era was painful for me; those guys were jerks/punks/thugs and I couldn't cheer for them. I loathed the most talented Gopher hockey player of the last 5 years (or one of them) because he was a nototiously selfish, arrogant and petulant prick. Whatever, thats just the way I'm built and I truly don't think these opinions make me a better fan than anyone else. At the same time I cannot understand the other side, hence the original post. Again, apologies for unintended ruffled feathers. I see I was correct in my assesment.
Kevan
I am guessing Kevan isn't a fan of most any professional sports teams. I see I was correct in my assesment. It appears as though I wouldn't fit into your definition of 'fan', sure. In that opinion, if true, you certainly wouldn't be alone. However, I love sport and competition and hold certain teams in certain sports more closely to my heart than others. I really enjoy the times when I can feel proud of those teams (like the Twins, quite often). I refuse, though, to close my eyes to negative aspects of those teams I love and to follow them blindly. Again, I do not think this makes me better than any other fan; it's just how I operate. I believe 'enthusiast' may more accurately describe how I follow sports. And I don't think that makes me lesser than a 'fan', either. Just different. Differences: spice of life!

cryptique
are these umps on drugs?I only saw the missed call on Napoli's double play at third base, but I gather that wasn't the only umpiring issue. On the double play (lack of) call, I don't understand why the home plate umpire didn't correct the third base umpire. There's no way the home plate ump didn't see the tag on the runner coming from second.

jakobnicholas
I've mostly hated the Yankees over the years. But I'm finding it VERY hard to not like their team. Jeter's impossible to not admire as a player...I love everything about how he plays and his attitude and personallity and how he carries himself on the field. He's got a George Brett vibe. Posada and Texiera and Rivera are all easy to root for. A-Rod is NOT easy to root for, but he seems very humbled from his mistakes, and is playing amazing and focused ball right now. I'm kinda hoping the Yanks win it all.
Sir Stewart
Invoking George Brett as a positive comparison to Jeter sounds weird to me. George Brett has always seemed like a cock.

jakobnicholas
Invoking George Brett as a positive comparison to Jeter sounds weird to me. George Brett has always seemed like a cock. Brett always hustled, always gave it his all, always hit in the clutch and was the emotional and performance leader of many great Royals's teams. Off the field, Brett was was rumored to be very into the ladies, much like Jeter. Brett, like Jeter, seems like a "guy's guy". Brett may have been a little more charismatic off the field....I don't know too much about Jeter. I find a lot of similarities between the two. Please explain why you think Brett was a cock. GO YANKEES!
cryptique
Fuck the Yankees. I hope they now lose three straight and A-Rod's head explodes. The Yankees are the earthly embodiment of pure evil. Whenever the Yankees win the World Series, it is as if Sauron has seized total control of Middle Earth.
bleedorange
Seriously, any non-Yankees fan who openly roots for the Yankees should be banished to an uninhabitable island for the rest of eternity.

bobbob1313
The Yankees are the earthly embodiment of pure evil. I hate when people say things like this. I don't necessarily like the Yankees, but I want them to win this year because I think they are the best team and I want to see the best team win the World Series. I think they are about the same as most major market teams, just to a greater extent because they have the ability to.
jakobnicholas
Seriously, any non-Yankees fan who openly roots for the Yankees should be banished to an uninhabitable island for the rest of eternity. I'm a life-long Royals fans, and have generally despised the Yankees. But the Royals are beyond suckiness. There is zero hope here. It's depressing as hell. So when the playoffs roll around, because I like baseball, I latch onto a team and root for them. This Yankees team is fun to root for. They play smart. They play hard. They have a bunch of classy players. And they don't have a fan base of snobs like Red Sox nation.
bobbob1313
I also am rooting for A-Rod out of contrarian obligation. Everybody hates him, so I want him to succeed because he's a great player and people are stupid.

Everybody hates him, so I want him to succeed because he's a great player and people are stupid. I heard a sportswriter recently say that he probably wouldn't vote A-Rod into the Hall of Fame because of his steroid admission. But the sportswriter also said there's no doubt A-Rod is maybe the most talented player in baseball and is no doubt a Hall of Fame talent. I like that someone can get dealt a harsh blow, then bounce back from it. A-Rod seems to be doing that.

bjorn_skurj
What'd Teixeira do, other than not want to play for a perennially moribund franchise? (Hint: the next time Washington calls and wants to dump a baseball team on your state, don't pick up the phone!)
bobbob1313
It's called being a sports fan. You should try it sometime. lulz, good one. But really, why the Yankees and not, like, the Redskins? Or the Red Sox? Or the Cubs? Or any other team that does everything that they can to win. I love people who bitch about the money the Yankees spend because you know if they were only spending $120 million those same people would bitch about the greedy Steinnbrenners pocketing the money. As a fan of a small market team, It bothers me somewhat that big market teams can spend whatever they want, but I'm not going to bitch because the Yankees have the ability to spend more than anyone. They are spending everything they can to win, I'm not going to fault them for it. If the Athletics can only spend 80 million on payroll, but they are spending every penny they can then aren't they doing the exact same thing as the Yankees? What'd Teixeira do, other than not want to play for a perennially moribund franchise? (Hint: the next time Washington calls and wants to dump a baseball team on your state, don't pick up the phone!) Got paid. The worst thing anyone can do.

Not worth rooting for on any level unless he happens to sign for your team.
