Big Star

I just saw that the "double CD" version of #1 Record/Radio City is available for download from Amazon for only $5. I'd buy it if I didn't already have the disc and the box set. That's a steal.

It took me a long time to "get" Big Star. A teacher of mine in high school made me a copy of "#1 Record/Radio City" and I listened to it, but didn't really get into it until I heard Elliott Smith's version of "Thirteen" then went back and re-discovered them, and now am mildly obsessed.

Finished up Eaton's book on Radio City a few days ago one of the better 33 1/3's I have read, very interesting personal connection between him and Alex as well.

I'm just reading that right now! Really good so far.

I actually just ordered that from Amazon although I went super saver shipping so it could be awhile before I get it.

I know what you mean. I broke down and ordered it the other day, but it was a tough call. If I didn't love that album so much I would've passed. There's not many left so you best order soon if you're gonna pull the trigger.

I'm old enough to have actually being buying albums in 1970. I wish I could say I knew of Big Star but alas, no. Nice albums but as to owned the 1970's, I propose 2 bands:

Allman Brothers

Idlewid South

At Fillmore East

Eat A Peach

Brothers and Sisters

The Who

Live at Leeds

Who's Next

Quadrophenia

Somebody recorded the Big Star show that I was at in 1994 at the Metro.

Here's a link to the blog where it's linked:

Not sure if the DL is still available. But if it is, it's well-worth hearing.

Wilco with Jody Stephens doing "In the Street":

Out standing. This needs to show up in a professionally produced DVD. John on lead vocals and Jeff on the solo.

Wilco with Jody Stephens doing "In the Street":

I saw them play this when they were last in Sydney (sans Jody Stephens). It was one of the highlights of the night. "Thank You, Friends" had preceeded it.

John's voice is made for this song.

I posted this on facebook. Waiting for someone to ask me why Wilco is covering the theme song from That 70's show...

Okay, perhaps I shouldn't admit to this, but when I read this I thought "That's where I heard that song before!" :lol

Big Star is on that list of bands (which is getting a little too long) that I haven't delved into, yet.

John did sound great, singing.

Trailer for the upcoming Big Star Story Nothing can hurt me:

Big Star Story Trailer

This film has finally been released.  I watched it twice in two days (cable TV On Demand).  Has anyone else seen it?

Thoughts:

I loved it, although I'm not exactly sure why.  *laughs*  It is very much a documentary without a lot of source material for its subject.  It is mostly interviews with people "around" the band, and musicians who are fans.  There is very little film of the band. Mostly still photos, etc, but it is very creatively done.  I did not learn much that I did not already know.  However, the enthusiasm of those who were interviewed, from musicians (e.g. Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter), and also rock journalists who talk about how hearing the music was "life-changing",  echoed my own feelings about Big Star.  Interviews with Chris Bell's brother and sister were especially poignant.

It's playing on the big screen July 26th in Denver so I have a ways to wait.  Really looking forward to it though.
