Actually I had the opportunity to venture into Wilco's dressing room at MSG in December after they opened for Neil Young. I posted about this back then but here is a brief recap. I shook hands with John, Glenn and Mikal congratulating them on a great show. Nels was busy with some friends and I didn't bother him. He also looked pretty beat. Pat was talking to friends outside the dressing room so rather than interrupt I said nothing to him. Jeff was sitting by one of those benches by a sports locker speaking to people with Spencer by his side. I waited for the crowd to move on and went up to him and complemented him on the performance and how we had seen them in New Haven earlier in the year and shook his hand. I asked if he would mind having a picture taken and he was agreeable. I wished Spencer a happy birthday and on the way out of the dressing room the person I was with grabbed two beers out of a cooler and gave me one. We hung around for a few more minutes. I spoke to John again about their upcoming album. Later that night my son and his friend went backstage several times during Neil Young's performance and talked to Jeff a few times as they watched Neil on a TV monitor backstage. Jeff spoke to him about the new album. It was a pretty cool experience. All the Wilco members were friendly. Got to meet Noel Gallagher that night as well but he didn't seem too enthused about the encounter.

In April we were at Indiana University waiting outside the venue for another Wilco concert and John, Jeff and Nels walked by us right where we were sitting. John waved and said hello but that was it.

This thread seems as a good as any to ask something i've been wondering for awhile. I've always wondered about a few name pronunciations (I feel very lame not knowing this btw). Is Glenn's last name pronounced "Koch" or "Kochee" or some other variation? And is Mikael's name pronounced "Mick-ale" or "Michael"? I really ought to know this but I figured I would just get it straightened out for certain.

Thanks :thumbup

I have met the band or (members of the band) on a couple of occasions.

First time I saw John in an Irish Pub in Iowa City before a show in like 2000 or so. I was like hey John he was like hey, and that was it.

Second time I weasled my way into a Radio tapping of the band sometime durning the post Bennett YHF era. It was Jeff, John, Glen and LeRoy. I sat in a room with them and about 6 other fans. I got them all to sign my YHF CD, I have a picture of Jeff, John, myself, and my buddy somewhere. It was pretty damn cool. The craziest thing is that they all hung out after the tapping and answered questions and such for at least 30 mins.

Then when Golden Smog was doing a show in Minneapolis at the 400 Bar, the next day there was a "secret show" billed as Kraig Johnson and Friends or something like that. Which we all knew was a bunch of dudes from Golden Smog playing mini solo sets. So there I was waiting in the bar before the show drinking a Grain Belt standing next to the fire exit. I was talking to my friend and I heard a knock on said fire exit. So I thought what the hell and I opened it. And low and behold it was Jeff and Sue Tweedy. He said, "Can I come in?" I said "sure." And he walked in talked with some fans for awhile and then disappeared in the back room.

Just a few weeks ago I saw Mikael eating at an Irish Pub in Madison, after a Pronto show. I gave him the cool guy head nod, which he returned, and that was that.

So yeah.

My wife met John and Pat at Niagara Falls before the Lewiston show. She had never been to the Falls before so my sister-in-law took her ealier in the day before the show. She saw John and Pat and sort of ran into them. They were very cool to her. Posed for a picture which my wife still uses as her wallpaper and had my sister-in-law give them directions to a nearby monument to Tesla (the man not the band). I mentioend this once before in the Lewiston show thread.

After the show we stuck around and had an opportunity to meet Nels and Glenn and get their autographs. They both impressed us with their kindness and approachability. It is a little thing but when they signed their autographs both of them made a point to make eye contact with us, say hello, and to talk for a moment.

I'm glad you're brave enough to ask! I've thought about posting this same question many times and chickened-out. (Not sure why.)

I'm a bit "Jonny come lately" to the Wilco party, only becoming a fan in January at the 7 worlds shows. Walking back to the hotel afterwards I was saying to Pez I didn't even know any of their songs, right as I was walking past Jonny Marr and Jeff. I don't think they heard me; they were busy checking out a takeaway menu in a shop front. We kept walking, Pez and I just looking at each other like Oh. My. God. Then she turns around and darts back and tells them what a great show it was, and how she's a new wilco fan. My brain isn't wired to my mouth at the best of times, so I just concentrated on not sounding like a dick. They were friendly and nice, in fact after the third show we waited around to get Pez's t-shirt signed and Jonny remembered her as "the new wilco fan".

I needed more Wilco after that, so lined up part of my European holiday with their Scandinavian dates. Had everything booked in, then they announced the mini 7 worlds London show, which of course I had to go to, so changed my bookings at the last minute. Checking into my hotel in Oslo the day after the concert out of the corner of my eye I see two people join behind me, and lo and behold its John and Glenn. I sucked up my nerve and said great show last night etc. I then proceeded to scare them by telling them I was stalking them (hey, I was going to the next 3 shows, they were bound to realise even if I didn't point it out, though I wish I had used other words). Unfortunately for them there was trouble with my booking, so they were stuck behind me for a fair while. :blush Ironically enough, my booking was stuffed up because I had gone to London to see them! I was rather embarrassed and finally the check-in chick dealt with them while mine was being worked out. Deciding not to freak them out anymore I moved to the side and left them be, but Glenn was super nice and came back over and talked to me again, just about the rest of my trip and stuff like that.

I did the Oslo festival, then onto Goteburg. It was leaving Goteburg that I saw them again at the airport, joining the check in queue behind them (totally not deliberately, I'm a bit blind and didn't realise till I was there). Avoided eye contact as although I had told them I was stalking them, I really didn't want to reinforce the point, and gave them a head start to security. They must have piss farted around as I caught them again, and ended up following Pat through, both of us in our socks. Flight was delayed slightly, so pulled up a chair and sent Pez some Oh. My. God text messages. Saw the rest of the band but didn't approach, I just wouldn't know what to say. Finally board and Mikael, his wife, and John are behind me in the queue and my boarding pass won't scan. Took forever to work out, and I head John saying he was a curse upon lines, so I had to turn around and say "Sorry, me again..."

It was a fairly small plane and half empty at that, apparently not many people want to go from Goteburg to Helsinki (after going to Helsinki I understand why). Found it funny Jeff was in first class and everyone else in economy. At baggage collection Glenn saw me again and came over for a chat. I said how much I had enjoyed the concerts, and he said how they had changed the set lists etc, and how he was looking forward to seeing his family who were already in Helsinki. I suspect I didn't do good job of not looking like a knob. Meeting them was the highlight of my trip. Maybe that makes me sad, but I figure if there's a place I can admit it and not be judged it has to be here. For someone who has only been a Wilco fan less than a year I'm doing well on the meetings!

I met Nels after a Singers show in Asheville. Very cool, down to earth guy. There were only about 30 people at the show, so he came of stage at the end to talk to fans. I was a little embarrassed because my wife was incredibly drunk (doesn't drink very often and when she does... yikes), but I'm glad I got to meet him.

Met Jeff and Michael after a show in Charleston. Jeff seemed kind of out of it.. Not really talking much.. But he just played a 2+ hour show, so I'm sure he was pretty worn out... It was raining after the show, and I told them that it was very cool of them to come out in the rain and meet with fans.

i saw them in Sept 07 in Little Rock, AR. After the show they waited about an hour and then came out to sign stuff for a small crowd that was waiting around the tour bus. I got my SBS vinyl signed by all of the guys, and they were all super nice. Nels and Glenn, as i remember, were two of the nicest guys ever. Jeff was really nice, too, but in his standard mildly anti-social sort of way.

In the 2004 Otto's shows, Jeff introduces him as Glenn "coach-ee". And everyone in the band seems to refer to Mikael as "Mike," so I assume laymen can too.

Thanks. I saw Mikael and a woman walking outside the venue before their recent St. Paul show and thought about going across the street to say hello, get a photo, etc. but I decided against bugging him (Mind you this was not easy for this 20 year old fan, @ his first wilco show no less!). I guess one of the things that factored into my decision was my indecision regarding his name pronunciation :blush.

When i met Wilco, Mikael was not very friendly. And by not friendly, i mean, the entire band was signing autographs and taking pictures and he was standing on the other side of the barriers just looking on. He came out about 30 minutes into the signing though

Sadly, you might say something like, "You're Jeff Tweedy"

I've met Jeff and Nelson three seperate occasions. John, Mikael, Pat, and Glenn I've met once. Jeff and Nels were always very cool, the rest were cool but there was a big line of folks there so didn't get much time to chat with them.

I saw Glenn outside of a record store in Madison two years ago. I'm always hesitant on approaching someone with celebrity status, I guess it depends on the day but I assume it's bothersome...so I just told him to have a good show. He turned and waved looking at me like "geez, where'd he come from."

I had a near-miss with Glenn once. When Wilco played Kansas City in March 2006, my then-girlfriend-now-wife and I were running some errands the day of the show and spotted Glenn standing on a street corner a few hours before the show, clearly looking for a cab or trying to get his bearings.

"Holy sh*t that's Glenn Kotche!" I said.

"Oh let's stop and say hi! Or maybe see if he needs a lift somewhere?" my companion said.

"Nah. He might be creeped out" I said.

And then we drove on. An hour later, I was kicking myself for not stopping to at least say hi and wishing him good luck on the gig...
