myboyblue
This is awful news. I've had the chance to see him live a couple of times and he is a talented performer and has a great sense of humor. I sure hope he pulls through. VICVIBES!

LouieB
this is very sad news. I saw him during the reissue tour a few years back. Sadly I didn't get a chance to see him more often. Sometimes talent comes with great burdens and in his case he had many. LouieB

Dude
I really hope he makes it. People on Twitter also confirm he is still alive this morning but on life support. A great song of his off his new album, hugely moving and sad even before this turn of events: I am a man I am self awareAnd everywhere I goYou’re always right there with me I flirted with you all my lifeEven kissed you once or twiceAnd to this day I swear it was niceBut clearly I was not ready When you touched a friend of mineI thought I would lose my mindBut I found out with timeThat really, I was not ready Oh Death,Oh Death,Oh Death,Really, I'm not ready Oh Death, you hector meDecimate those dear to meTease me with your sweet reliefYou are cruel and you are constant When my mom was cancer-sickShe fought but then succumbed to itBut you made her beg for itLord Jesus, please, I'm ready Oh DeathOh DeathOh DeathReally, I'm not ready Oh DeathOh DeathOh DeathReally, I'm not ready

HungryHippo
confirmed http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/25/vic-chesnutt-singer-dies/so sad. this is from a sorta recent interview with Aquarium Drunkard; VC: Well, this song just kind of happened. It is very personal. During run-through, when I was showing it to everyone, in the first couple of takes, I had tears in my eyes. It was very emotional to me. I’d never sung this song out – it was only on paper. But when I sing it out loud, it was very emotional for me and very personal. I wanted to write a song about a suicidal person. It’s about me – I have suicidal tendencies. So it’s about a suicide who wanted to live. AD: The song does, lyrically, migrate from the line about “I flirted with you all my life / I even kissed you once or twice..” VC: It’s about being a suicide. I’ve attempted suicide a couple of times and I think about things such as that. They have a kind of love/hate relationship with death. I do, in some ways. That’s what I say in the song – “tease me with your sweet relief.” The song is about realizing that I don’t want to die. I want to live. you can read the entire interview here: My linkhttp://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2009/08/31/vic-chesnutt-the-ad-interview/ even though Vic may no longer be here in 3D, we have his music and he'll live on forever in that, thank goodness. RIP Vic.
M. (hristine
After my sister's suicide attempt, a counselor told me that suicide is not so much a wish for death as it is longing to stop suffering. His music was brutally honest and burned intensely. Such a gift he left. God speed, Vic.

brianjeremy
Freaking horrible news. I love the man's music and saw him live several times. My brother is a huge fan of Vic's and will totally be devastated by this news. The song Bug from West of Texas is about my small hometown, Walhalla, SC. Apparently he had some ties to Walhalla. Horrible news.

Sir Stewart
Sad to hear. He did what he had to do, I guess. I saw him open for Wilco. He was on Fresh Air with Terry Gross just a month ago, and hearing him talking about his health costs was awful.I think this is the same piece: http://www.npr.org/t...oryId=120978388RIP
