Shakespeare In The Alley
Nice! Those are two albums I've bought for the hell of it at thrift stores for $1 and ended up loving. I went through a French pop obsession s few years ago, and Polnereff was a favorite.

I went through a French pop obsession s few years ago, and Polnereff was a favorite. yeah, polnareff's definately one of my favourite french musicians, although to be fair i don't know that many. who else do you recommend? (ignoring gainsbourg, of course)
augurus
I can safely assure there is nothing behind the hype. The voice is wonderful, but the lyrics are awfully bland and trite. Hey NPR, stop recommending Norah Jones while you're at it.
GtrPlyr
If you're looking for some good French music SP, I'd recommend Jacques Dutronc: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pQoWFTUqaU RPM put out a great compilation not that long ago called "Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi: Jacques Dutronc 1966-1969" that's worth getting. I also dig Françoise Hardy, Jacques Brel, and Johnny Hallyday's late 60s period. Inspired by this thread, NP:

Shakespeare In The Alley
Yeah, Brel is another one I listened to a bunch. Hardy too. I used last.fm radio to find some good ones. The "Serge Gainsbourg similar artists" station was a godsend.
Synthesizer Patel
wow! Jacques Dutronc is damn damn good. i just ordered his first 2 albums, hearing this on youtube won me over: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wudF6FJh8tA&feature=related

Shakespeare In The Alley
Synthesizer: I bought an album by Claude Francois a while back. All really good, but this song especially. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsNyPFTY2J8I haven't found anymore of his stuff, but this CD (it's called Comme D'Habitude, and the title track is the original French version of My Way) I have is fantastic. Shakespeare In The Alley
Here's another. It plays in the last scene of the Darjeeling Limited. Fantastic song. I've been trying to find some of his albums, but no luck. Love this song though.

Shakespeare In The Alley
I've never looked into translations. I like being completely unaware of what the songs are about. My dips into foreign language are limited to this French stuff, some Brazilian music, and Gruff Rhys' Welsh songs, but I like the idea of words sometimes being pure sound with no meaning.
