Met this dude the day before yesterday, driving up to see the giant sequoias of Grant Grove in Sequoia Nat'l Park. He was in the road about 4 feet from my car, glaring and rattling his ass off. I chose to stay in the car.

Aren't there rattlers in the Appalachians?

Could be, I'm no herpetologist. (Is that the word?) For some reason I thought rattlesnakes were a western thing. I know we've got water moccasins, cottonmouths and copperheads--seems like plenty enough. Ugh--I hate snakes. Just looking at 'em scares the bejeezus out of me.

[shakes fist] Damn you, Donna!

There are rattle snakes in Southern Illinois. The above looks pretty cool and mad.

3 feet maybe?

The timber rattlesnake inhabits much of the eastern US.

There are timbers in Southern Illinois. They are on the endangered list.

Killing a timber rattlesnake violates Illinois endangered species laws and generally carries a fine somewhere between $500 and $2,500.

I had a run in last year with a rattler in Badlands South Dakota. He was all stretched across our walking path and looked to be dead. Of course that meant we needed to try and make sure, so we started throwing things near him to get a reaction. We were pretty convinced it was dead as it was not reacting to anything when it suddenly coiled up and looked at us. The speed of it was crazy. The sound I made was not manly. I might have pushed my youngest daughter towards it to get the hell away, it's all a blur. I'm not proud.

I would think it's longer than 3 feet. Thats a helluva snake. Its funny, I hate me a snake but it's an amazing creature. I think I can even see some beauty in it.... Wait.... Never mind. No I don't.

Yeah, I agree, I think it's at least 5 feet. Pretty fat & healthy, too. Glad I did meet up with it while on foot. I was noticing some specks of red on him ("You've got red on you" haha) and wondering if maybe he was injured. Or maybe that's just from the last rabbit he ate.

Hahahahaha. A story for the grandkids someday.

That was the closest that I've ever been to a snake. I've never visited a lawyer either.

And how often do people get charged with killing endangered snakes? There has to be some sort of "self-defense" loophole.

Yes, that guy's hair is beyond amazing.

I saw a rattler for the first time this summer too. Up in the mountains in the Catskills. Apparently they like hot rocks and this was way up on a rocky peak (with amazing views, I might add). It was crossing the driveway of the house I was going to. It took a look in my direction and then slithered off into the rocks. Pretty freaky, I have to say. I was delivering something to the house. I got in and out of there quickly!

Yeah you're right, I read the set list Saturday morning before I had my morning coffee, so a chuckle was all I could muster up at the time.

Curious to know when people at the show realized that the "S" theme - would have been fun to guess trying to guess the next tune.

I'd say around 4-5 tunes in the buzz was making it's way around the place.
