gogo
Yeah, that nonsense gets into completely ridiculous territory. I'm not trying to excuse Cabrera in any way, but J.T. Snow did have a perspective on this that I'd not heard before: http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Giants-J-T-Snow-reflects-on-Cabrera-3798925.php The people I feel most sorry for are the "Melk Men". The High Heat
I've heard the Latin-players-are-disadvantaged view before. It's true, but at this point there's been enough positive PED tests for every player to know that there's a pretty great chance he'll busted sooner or later. (I also truly understand why names and birthdates are altered or assumed. Some have no chance of helping their families by 'getting off the island' with some kind of help or shortcut.) I'm not real passionate about the PED problem. I find it hipocrital for most of society to seek out doctor's prescriptions for just about any affliction (real or imagined) so they can get through the day, and then turn around and criticize pro athletes for basically doing the same thing. For the long-term physical price they pay, I'm not going to vilify them for needing help with fatigue or healing. To me, that's different than taking things to be a different performer than you're naturally capable of. Melky has clearly been playing above his skill level the past two seasons, so he's clearly been taking something does more than give him a bump of energy. To top it off he's perpetrating a fraud on MLB by creating a fake website. Melky could have made around $30M over a 12-13 year period being a 4th outfielder, which is his skill level. Instead he's facing the possibility of a very long suspension, or a ban, or a conviction, or even deportation. If Melky would have been busted as a young player with the Yankees, trying to increase his income for his family, I could have compassion for that situation. But he's been around long enough to know better, and now throw in the fraud, I have little interest in seeing Melky Cabrera wearing any MLB uniform ever again.
gogo
I'm not even talking about the poverty angle, although that's part of it, certainly. But part of what J.T. Snow is saying there is that for a player like Melky, this isn't his home, he doesn't necessarily have any interest in protecting the integrity of the Great American Pastime, or whatever. Yes, no doubt he could have made plenty of money without doping, but for every game he got away with it, he was increasing his chances of an even bigger payoff down the line. Again: not defending Melky, I have no interest in seeing in back anywhere near AT&T Park. Just an interesting perspective.

The High Heat
And now for some good news!Ladies & gentlemen, the future of speed, Billy Hamilton! http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20120821&content_id=37103464&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb Hamilton surpasses Vince Coleman as the record holder for steals in a minor league season. He has 147 swipes and still has a couple of weeks left to pad his stats. So far Hamilton has been playing SS, but not very well. Look for this kid to play CF in AAA next year and even be called up to play regularly in the second half as well. He may even get the September callup to Cincinnati this season. He hits kind of like Coleman as well, with his strike zone discipline needing improvement. I've watched some video of Hamilton on YouTube. It's not that he's all that much faster than other speed guys, but he's at full speed at first step. As soon as his front foot hits the ground, Hamilton is gone!

calvino
Speaking of stolen bases and baseball cards, a couple of weeks ago I was looking through by old baseball cards (that I still keep at parents, after 25 years or so) and came upon one of my prized possessions when I was a kid. It was still in its nifty case. Now it's displayed on my 2 1/2 year old dresser.Stealing bases seems to be a lost art - Good for Hamilton. Go, White Sox.
The High Heat
I miss the speed game - a lot.I think Hamilton, like Coleman, will end up somewhere between Henderson and Washington. I don't think old Herb even know which end of the bat was the business side. Great card, Calvino! I had to abandon an enormous stash of cards from my childhood due to a long-distance move when I was 11 in 1982. When I think of all those cards I had from teams like the Big Red Machine, et al, I cringe.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
I'm wondering when Mike Scioscia is going to start feeling the heat. All I was hearing from the national baseball media before the season started was how the Angels were far and away the best team in the west and more than a few projected them as the preseason favorite to win the World Series...And then they added the second coming of Mickey Mantle (yeah...Trout is really all that). As of today, the Angels are nine games out and are seemingly floundering. I don't want to hear how the Angels pitching staff is hurting or how Albert had a bad first two months. The Rangers had 10 different pitcher make more than one start this year with two (including the prohibitive staff ace) out for the year. Michael Young and Mike Napoli have lost their stroke (Young's OPS+ is at 71) and Josh Hamilton has a HORRIBLE two months in the middle of the year, but the Rangers keep plugging along. Ron Washington has had some muted criticism that he isn't a good in-game technical mananger, but HIS team performs for him. Just how hard do you think it must be to motivate a team that has lost two world series in a row. This team has the best record in the American League. Wash's team PERFORMS for him. If Wash doens't win manager of the year this year, they should stop giving out the award.

The High Heat
I read a story about him a couple weeks ago - that he's scored by tagging up from 2nd base on deep fly balls, and that he's stolen 2nd base on throws back to the mound. He gets the quickest jumps I've ever seen, basically full speed at first step after his initial jump. It's kind of like putting your car in drive and then hitting 60 mph a fraction of a second later. It's insane! On the other hand, he's gotten tossed over 30 times, so Hamilton needs a little more discipline in his risk-taking choices and strike zone judgement. And he for damn sure ain't no shortstop. 30 errors!
