Wilco — 7/28/12, Cooperstown, NY (Brewery Ommegang)

Recommended Posts

Some rain early on in Wilco's set didn't seem to deter a beer-fueled crowd ready to have a good time. And a good time was had by most, it seemed...

Here was the complete setlist, as played:

Dawned On Me

War On War

I Might

Sunken Treasure (electric arrangement; no harmonica)

Either Way

Hummingbird

Impossible Germany

Born Alone>

Laminated Cat (aka Not For The Season) (electric arrangement)

What's The World Got In Store

Handshake Drugs

Whole Love

Kamera

Box Full Of Letters

I'm Always In Love

Heavy Metal Drummer>

I'm The Man Who Loves You

A Shot in the Arm

----------------------------

Poor Places>

Art Of Almost

Standing O

-----------------------------

Airline To Heaven

Hate It Here

Can't Stand It

Red-Eyed and Blue>

I Got You (At The End of the Century)>

Outtasite (Outta Mind) (w/Steve Shelley on end gong)

Great show and great beer! Was cool to hear sunken treasure again, as well as either way and what's the world got in store. Jeff claimed it to be the best crowd of the tour.

Should be noted there was a plentiful taper section, including nyctaper, so there should be at least one solid source for this show

LOVED this show. Great flow. Hadn't looked at setlists this tour, and was pleasantly surprised by the little adjustments they've made. Either Way, my first Kamera, PoorPlaces>Art of Almost, a sublime Airline to Heaven. And finally, a show without Jesus etc!!! Great beer, great friends, plenty of room to move around, a little rain, and beautiful drive out and back to NH.

Right, and there wasn't any recycling for the beer cans you weren't allowed to bring into the camping area and for the beer bottles they asked you not to tailgate with in the parking lot. It must be Ommegang's fault that people threw their trash on the ground and didn't pack out their empties!? Pack it in - pack it out friend. Infrastructure shouldn't have to make up for a lack of personal responsibility.

I've seen them about a dozen times and took my brother to this one - his first time seeing Wilco...At the end, he said, "Man, I haven't been to a rock concert like that in years." Although I never considered a Wilco show a rock concert, that night it certainly fit...Absolutely loved the setlist and just the overall feel of the band, the venue, etc...

If anyone has the link to a recording of this show, please let me know where I can get it.

Thanks!

You hit the nail on the head djp0910 (I feel so futuristic calling you that). This was my 14th show over 9yrs and I can say that this was the most "rock concert" I've ever seen them. The show was beautiful, the audience/venue were into it and a complete pleasure and the setlist was a perfect outdoor, Summer show bunch of songs. In fact, I'd say the band was pitching a perfect game, until a slight Airline to Heaven vocal flub, but that was due to fan interference. Watch the replay, the fans up front are clapping out of time and it blew Tweedy's concentration. Actually, the fans in back were out of time too, but I don't think he can hear them.

Great show in Cooperstown. They hit hometown Rochester, NY this Friday at another gorgeous venue, the Highland Bowl in Highland Park, a Fredrick Law Olmstead park, for all you park design fans out there. Across the street is the sight of a former home of Fredrick Douglass, for all you history buffs out there, who happens to be buried down the street in Mt. Hope Cemetary. He used to hang with Susan B. Anthony downtown, btw.

what a wonderful wonderful night.

worth every bit of the 5 1/2 hour drive each way.

full disclosure: i was the pretty damn drunk guy by the end of the night

in the pink t shirt.

sorry for bumping.

zero apologies for rocking?

on a better note, the iphone i lost the night of the show, i found, wet and working, in the field the nexxt morning.

and then hit the HOF like church

on sunday.

I have a new favorite venue for a Wilco show - Ommegang Brewery. Guys in pink t-shirts who are rocking out only made it better.

There were lots of beer-fueled folks there, but no one in my vicinity was out of hand. There were just loads of people having a great time. I think that was apparent to the band, and thus Jeff's comments, which I took as heartfelt.

I agree with the prior comments about this being a rock concert. I had flashbacks to 1997. The last three songs were ripping, and the energy did not flag all night, but somehow picked up in intensity as the night went on. Like a good rock show should.

Hey D.B. great to see you & your sweetheart in Cooperstown...looking VERY forward to seeing you guys in Rochester & will keep "The WILCO Report" going as best I can from the stops in between on the road to Mass-MoCA & Hartford (ironing out Columbus details too...)...here's some Wilco fun for you & L.L.-B.

@Lukestar:

And apparently it's a trend among this age group...who knew?

I can't hear the sound with this one...but hopefully it'll get fixed...is there anyway to get these two kids to meet up for a duet?!!?

There was some nice sunset light behind John and Pat.

I believe this lighting was used during I'm Always in Love. i thought it was pretty cool.

Nels's third shirt of the night. Seems like every front yard up here has a pro- or anti- fracking sign, though I couldn't discern a clear majority.

I'm sure Jeff was doing the hometown pandering thing that happens in every city, but I agree that this was good crowd and a good vibe. I enjoyed this show much more than Brooklyn, where a ton of people around me talked all night, both nights. At Cooperstown, everybody sang along to every song, even the non-hits. it was nice to see a song like Either Way get a good reception. At the end, I Got You>Outtasite was particularly exuberant.

RE: Airline to Heaven, just before the song Jeff said this crowd was now the best crowd on the tour. "Those other audiences are dead to me."..."You had a good disposition in the rain, you sang along, you're beautiful, you're a little tipsy. You're almost everything a rock band looks for in an audience. I don't know what else we could ask for but I know there must be something else. Maybe you could show us what you got in the last couple of songs here, You can push it to that next level."

After Airline, he said "I was reminded what the missing element is .. Rhythm." And then he said a good audience can take a joke! Haha.

Did anyone go to the Hall of Fame on Saturday and/or see the band there? I had hoped to go but didn't make it up til mid-afternoon Saturday and went straight to the show. Hit up the Farmers Museum Sunday.

Two photos of the venue:

It wasn't just a stage in an open field. Paul pointed out to me that the beer silos next to/behind the stage were reminiscent of the silos at Sloss Furnaces. Always nice seeing a show in a cool, new (to me) setting.

Google Don't Frack My Mother - and you'll see what that's all about. It's a song by Sean and Yoko.

Figured I'd also post the setlist for the Lee Ranaldo Band's opening set. This Brewery Ommegang show marked the first time Pat sat in with them on this run — Nels also continued to sit in — leading Lee to half-jokingly dub it the Lee Ranaldo Big Band.

Anyway, they played this 45-minute set:

Off The Wall

Angles

Waiting On A Dream (w/Pat Sansone on organ)

Tomorrow Never Comes (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on tambourine and organ)

Xtina As I Knew Her (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on organ)

Hammer Blows (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar and Pat Sansone on organ)

Stranded (w/Nels Cline on lap steel)

Fire Island (Phases) (w/Nels Cline on electric guitar)

We just posted the nyctaper recording of this show:

Thanks, man - it was perhaps the best Wilco show I have ever seen. Certainly the most enjoyable.

Thanks. I am well out of the pop-culture and Beatles loops, but that song was funny.

Weird. I had a hard time getting into this show and probably felt the least engaged of the 25+ times I've seen them... I blamed the setlist but it was just as likely a personal problem. :loser Glad to hear that y'all had fun!

I had much more fun in Burlington the next night. :rock
